When we were young and energetic--it's nice to remember those days

To my readers of Hugh's News around the world.

Melvine and I celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary a week earlier than the date we were actually married. We wanted to rent the fellowship hall of the Bethlehem United Methodist Church, near Winder, GA. However, Saturday, August 13, 2010, was already reserved by another party. So, we opted for the earlier week of Saturday, August 7.

Melvine and Stephanie led the way in leadership in planning this extravaganza celebration. I told Melvine to spare nothing. It is only one time in a lifetime a couple can celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary. So, we gave it all we had to make it special for our family and friends.

We were told that some 150 people gathered last Saturday, August 7, to honor us with their presence. Although we did not ask for any gifts, only the presence of our friends and family, we were given lovely gifts, cards, money and gift certificates. We are overwhelmed and so grateful for every expression of love from those we love and hold in high esteem.

Here is how we looked on our wedding day. I was 27 years old, and Melvine was 25. Our birthdays are one day apart. I was born two years before Melvine on December 15, 1932, and she was born on December 16, 1934. How blessed can one be?

1960 was a big year for me. I graduated from Furman University in Greenville, SC, with a B. A degree in Psychology, and a double minor in English literature and Speech and Dramatics. In addition, I completed three years of Bible study with Dr. Paul F. Beacham and the Rev. Mr. Jesse Daniels. I was ordained by the Rev. Dr. Robert L. Rex, at River Springs, AL, and was married and went to seminary. God has blessed me more than anyone else. I am blessed indeed.

This photo of Melvine and me was printed on our program for our reception.

Greg played the piano as guests came into the fellowship hall. He played some of the best arrangements of love and romantic songs. He is a gifted pianist.

Melvine's first cousin, Mary Ann Shropshire Weeks and her husband, Everette, surprised us. We thought they would not be able to attend. In spite of their moving, they decided on Friday, to drive as far as Charlotte from Richmond, and then drive on down to Bethlehem, GA, for our reception. Stephanie called on Mary Ann to speak, and she did a masterful job speaking extemporaneously. She talked about the spiritual influe4nce that Melvine had had on her as a small girl and as a teenager.

I had hoped to share with you the DVD that Charles Terry did for us. He was adding my favorite song to the DVD, "When I Fall in Love."  We'll get that later for you.
