It was Charles Wesley, brother to Charles Wesley, who wrote the great hymn of the church, "O for a Thousand Tongues."
The first stanza goes like this:
"O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer's praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace.
The third stanza of this hymn reads like this:
"He breaks the power of canceled sin,
He sets the prisoner free.
His blood can make the foulest clean;
His blood availed for me."
In some hymnals I have seen the word "reigning" sin rather than "canceled" sin.
I believe God's Word teaches that He can break the power of reigning sin in your life. That's sin that is far too often repeated. Many of you have experienced failure to overcome a particular sin over and over again. That includes every category of sin that can separate you from God and destroy your life.
In Isaiah 55, we read these Words, "Seek the Lord while you can find Him. Call upon Him now while He is near: Let men cast off their wicked deeds; let them banish form their minds the very thought of doing wrong! Let them turn to the Lord that He may have mercy upon them, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon" (Isaiah 55: 6-7, The Living Bible).
James tells us in his epistle,"Happy is the man who doesn't give in and do wrong when he is tempted, for afterwards, he will get as his reward the crown of of life that God has promised those who love Him" (James 1:12, TLB).
James continues, "And remember, when someone wants to do wrong it is never God Who is tempting him, for God never wants to do wrong and never tempts anyone else to do it. Temptation is the pull of man's own evil thoughts and wishes. These evil thoughts lead to evil actions and afterwards to the death penalty from God" ((James13-15, TLB).
Sin begins in the thought life. When a person gives into those thoughts to do wrong, and then commits a sin, there are emotions that are connected with that experience that have great power to control a person, and it is recorded in the mind.
The way to break the power of reigning sin is to defeat that sin in your mind or thinking, that carries the power of vivid emotions that gave pleasure for only a moment of time. You can only break this power that has entrapped you by taking responsibility for your own thoughts and actions through the Name of Jesus and the power of the blood of Jesus. It will take a supernatural power to bring deliverance in your life. The blood of Jesus will avail for you, too.
When a sinful thought comes to mind, denounce it as sin, refuse to enter into that thought. Plead the blood of Jesus, and when you do God will enable you to banish the very thought of doing wrong. Victory will be yours if you refuse to allow the thought and the emotions that go along with the sin to dominate your thinking and emotions.
God will grant you mercy and supernatural power to defeat satan and the power of reigning sin in your life.
Charles Wesley testified to the fact that the blood of Jesus availed for him. It will avail for you as well.
