Stephanie Morgan gives honor and praise to her parents on their 50th Wedding Anniversary

It was truly an honor to celebrate my parents' 50th Wedding Anniversary this past Saturday, August 7, 2010, in the fellowship hall of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Barrow County, GA, near Winder. Everything was beautiful including the smiles on the many, beloved people in attendance. Mom's favorite color has always been pink so we made sure pink was in abundance for the event. There were pink napkins, pink table cloth overlays, pink roses and a beautiful dusty pink suit that Mom wore. I told the crowd that very few people have the distinct honor of achieving 50 years of marriage, especially in this time and age. What a tribute to their love and faithfulness through the years.

It was a miracle that Mom and Dad are together in the first place. Dad was born to parents in their mid 40s while Mom was born to teenage parents. They were living in different states, Mom in North Carolina and Dad in Alabama. They met at a Pentecostal Holiness Church in Appomattox, VA, when Dad sang bass in a quartet from Holmes Bible College, composed of Roland Harrell, Willard Wagner, and Eddie Wood. Mom made the comment that it would be funny if she married a man so tall since she was so short. Dad was a foot and three inches taller in fact. They soon discovered that their birthdays were 2 years and 1 day apart. They made a pact to send each other a birthday card and the rest is history. Mom loves to tell Dad that he is three years older every December 15th but on the 16th he's just two years older.

Faithfulness is the thing I think of most when asked about my parent's success in marriage. Love is a given, but it is the faithfulness that keeps them anchored. They made a vow to each other before God August 13, 1960, and that vow has never been broken. Amazing, isn't it?

I am so happy that Greg and I could share in this special time with my parents. We have always been a close-knit family so it is no surprise that we celebrated this special event to the greatest extent. We began our celebration as a family on May 30-June 5th by vacationing to Key West, Cayman Islands and Jamaica on a fabulous Caribbean cruise. We ended with a beautiful celebration with family and friends in Bethlehem, GA, near our home in Winder. So this Friday the 13th will not be bad luck for Hugh and Melvine Morgan, it will be the actual day of fifty years of marriage.

Here's to the greatest parents a girl could ever ask for!

Love,
Stephanie Ellen Morgan
