Southwestern Christian University Launches Online Courses

To meet the needs of its students, community and constituents, Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, Oklahoma, has announced the launch of online courses in the Spring of 2011. "A significant part of our university mission is to equip students for life-long learning," says Dr. Reggies Wenyika, Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs. "As our world progresses in technology and teaching methodologies, we must provide our students with current technological services while maintaining our university mission."

The need for online courses is widely increasing in academia, particularly post-secondary education. According to the 2010 Sloan Survey of Online Learning, web-based enrollment experienced a growth of nearly 1 million students compared to 2009. The 5.6 million students who were enrolled in 2010 represent an 18% increase over 2009 and a 17% increase over the previous year. This is a significant rate of growth when compared to the 1.2% growth rate of the overall higher education student population.

Higher education institutions continue to add online degrees and courses to their repertoire in order to keep up with the demand of the working adult returning to school. With the ever-growing capabilities in the innovative world of technology, distance learning has made degree completion a more readily attainable goal for many working adults.
