Southwestern Christian University's Zach Bryant Selected For Capital One Academic All-District Team
BETHANY, OK -- Many athletes competing at the collegiate level would agree that participating in a university sport is a full-time job. Practices, competitions and travel can consume a great number of hours in a student athlete’s life every week. In many cases academics can take a back seat to the schedule that athletic programs demand.
For a select few, academics remain a top priority throughout their higher educational experience. Southwestern Christian University is proud to announce such an individual is in their program.
Junior Zach Bryant, who was recently named to the Capital One Academic All-District team, is a native of Oklahoma City who spent his high school years as a home school student.
Bryant came to Southwestern Christian University in the fall of 2008 to compete in men’s basketball for the Eagles. As a Business Administration major, Bryant was chosen alongside 140 athletes out of the NCAA and NAIA to compile the Capital One Academic All-District teams, chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America from across the United States and Canada. Eight district teams were formed based off the district’s geographic location, and each district is made of a University Division team and a College Division team.
The University Division team is assembled of NCAA Division I student-athletes while the College Division team is assembled of student-athletes from the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, Canadian, and two-year schools.
As an NAIA competitor, Southwestern Christian University falls into the College Division category in District 6, for which Bryant was selected as a member of the second team.
Athletes selected to the districts’ first team, whether University or College Division, will automatically advance as a selection on the national Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, in which First, Second, and Third Teams will be selected in late February. Although Bryant will not get the chance to advance since he is not a first team All-District selection, he is one of seven student-athletes out of the selected University Division teams and College Division teams across all eight districts to holster a 4.0 GPA.
[Editor's Comment: I wish to join the Athletic Department of Southwestern Christian University, Mark Arthur, the Athletic Director and Coach, the basketball players, faculty and staff, and administrators in congratulating Zach Bryant for being selected for the Capital One Academic All-District Team.]
