"I hold it true whatever befalls, I feel it when I sorrow most, 'Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all."
These beautiful words were written by my favorite Victorian Poet, Alfred Lord Tennyson, about his young friend, Arthur Henry Hallam, in his eulogy to him in the monumental In Memoriam.
Although I chose to major in psychology at Furman University, I did a double minor in English literature and communications. One of my professors was none other than Robert Bass who wrote the book about the Revolutionary War hero Colonel Francis Marion. who was known as the "Swamp Fox." Dr. Bass' book was picked up by Walt Disney and made into a movie. I was blessed to be introduced to great English literature by this gifted professor who had taught English literature at the Naval Academy before coming to Furman University.
I made a vow to God that I would never study any subject on Sunday, except the Bible, and that whatever I learned in college, seminary, or graduate school I would use for His Glory and Honor. God helped me to keep that vow.
In this Hugh's News, on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 (Pearl Harbor Day 1941), you will be able to read a number of tributes to the late Jerry B. Walker. He was a treasured and trusted friend. There is no doubt about it he was a truly gifted Pentecostal/Charismatic evangelist. None will ever be like him and shouldn't be. He ministered in the supernatural as a result of his study of the Word, prayer and fasting, waiting upon the Lord, and flowing in the Holy Spirit. He had an unusual sense of timing and allowed the gifts of the Holy Spirit to flow in his life.
Although I was not able to attend his funeral, I was privileged to visit his grave site in Lubbock, TX, where he is buried near his father and mother, and other kin. On his tombstone is engraved the month and day of his birth, but not the year. He never seemed to want anyone to know that. I know the year of his birth, but I have been sworn to secrecy and will not reveal it. But I can tell you I am older than Jerry B. Walker. My birthday will be Wednesday week, December 15. I was born in 1932, in Birmingham, AL. Melvine's birthday will be December 16, and she is younger than I am.
