Dr. Jernigan taught Jerry (63-65) and me about 5 years apart at OKC Southwestern (Southwest College), but after my freshman year (1968,69), he took a pastorate, so he didn't know that Jerry came back the next year (68-70) and was Bill Shirley's assistant coach. We got married in 1970, and we didn't hear much about Dr. Jernigan until 1984. After OKC Southwestern closed on 10th Street in 1981, we moved to Alpine, TX, where Jerry was coaching baseball and basketball at Sul Ross State University.
One day I answered the phone, and Dr. Jernigan formally told me who was calling and said he would like to talk to Jerry Boone. I told him who I was and that I had married Jerry and was a teacher, too. Dr. Jernigan was the Academic Dean at the new Jimmy Swaggart Bible College and was looking for Pentecostal teachers and coaches who had advanced degrees. We flew to Baton Rouge, and Jerry was hired to be the athletic director and oversee the building of a fitness center with 2 or 3 basketball courts, volleyball court, male and female exercise rooms, an indoor track, an Olympic size pool, various other rooms.
After two years of overseeing the building and recruiting, Jerry coached the first men's basketball team at Jimmy Swaggart Bible College. I was interviewed and was hired to teach 2nd grade at Family Christian Academy which was also part of the Jimmy Swaggart Ministries. Marilyn Jernigan taught there, too, and taught our daughter, Kristen, in fifth grade. We have stayed in touch and have seen them a couple of times since leaving Baton Rouge. Both of the Jernigans have influenced many lives for Christ including my family and me.
