Merry Christmas and a Christ-filled New Year!
Holmes is near completion of the fall semester of the 120th term. It is finals week! Needless to say, everyone is excited!
It is a joyous time! Our Advent Chapel Services began two weeks ago on Wednesday, after returning from Thanksgiving break. Our South Korean students led the first advent service, followed by our African students from Tanzania, Liberia, and Nigeria last Monday and the American students led the service last Wednesday. Each group discussed Christmas traditions and the name of Jesus Christ was glorified in every service. Yesterday, I concluded our advents services by speaking on the hope of the Second Advent of Jesus and our responsibility to know Him and share Him.
Christmas is all about Jesus! One of the tasks for parents with a newborn baby is to give the expected child a name. Usually, the parents will spend several months talking and considering a proper name. A proper name expresses the hope of the parents that their child will be productive and successful in life's journey.
Several names and titles were given to Jesus prior to His birth. Dr. Elmer Towns speaking in this context said, "It is almost as though the prophets of God sought for the ideal name for the baby Jesus as they anticipated His coming to this world." (The Name of Jesus by Elmer Towns; Accent Publications, 1987, USA) Dr. Towns lists some 675 names. There is a name for all 26 letters of the English alphabet.
In Luke 1:32, the angel states to Mary that Jesus shall be called the "Son of the Highest." He also was to be called Jesus (Verse 31). Isaiah 7:14 said that He should be called Immanuel (God with us). Isaiah 9:6 declared that His name would be Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
The Lord God Jehovah had prepared the world for the coming of His Son. Galatians 4:4 speaks of that "fullness of time." Jesus was born right on time. He lived up to every name given. He was obedient in every way to His heavenly Father.
As we contemplate Jesus during this special time, let us be obedient and fulfill every expectation in our lives of our heavenly Father. Let us follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Word, reaching maturity in every way.
May the expectation of the Father's desire for us lead to one day hearing Him say, "Well done, good and faithful servant!"
He is coming again! He does carry the future names of King of kings and Lord of lords! Be ready. He is about to be given the new names.
