JOHN L. MCCAUL
JUNE 7, 1925 - APRIL 13, 2011
John L. McCaul, 83, passed away in his home on April 13, 2011. He was born on June 7, 1925 in Jacksonville, FL. He served in the US Navy during WWII before marrying Mae Jewell in 1946.
John graduated from Holmes Theological Seminary and Lynchburg College in Virginia. He began his ministry in DeLand, FL, before they were sent as missionaries by the PH Church to Kailua, Hawaii in 1953. There he served as pastor of the Good Shepherd Church for many years. He also worked for the Hawaii Department of Education where he was a teacher at Kailua Elementary School. After retiring, John and Mae moved to Vancouver, WA where they were active in their church and community before moving to Bend, OR, in 2007.
In his final days under Hospice care he spent time talking with his grandchildren, leaving them with personal messages about his hopes for them. His theme was always the same---- "Trust the Lord with all of your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all of your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6). He had the perfect road map for success in life.
John lived his life serving others and living at peace with everyone. His was a life well lived. He had no unresolved issues or bitterness. He was a man who held no grudges and looked for the best in everyone. He prayed daily and specifically for each member of his family. He prayed for others on a regular basis as well. His ladder, throughout his life, was always leaning against the right wall; he spent his career and spare time investing in other people. His capacity for forgiveness and encouraging the best in others is perhaps his greatest legacy.
John is survived by his wife Mae of 65 years; three daughters, 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
John will be remembered as a good man with a gentle spirit who lived according to his faith in God.
A memorial fund has been established in John’s name at Holmes Bible College in Greenville, South Carolina.

[Editor's comment: I am indebted to Debbie Hill and her two sisters, Elaine and Linda, for putting together this obituary and sending it to me. John and Mae had three daughters. They have honored their father, as well as their mother by this tribute.
John McCaul had decided prior to his death that he did not want a memorial service. He and Mae have only lived in Bend, OR, for four years. and they have been gone from the Vancouver area and Hawaii too long so he thought it best not to have any type of memorial service. However, the immediate family will celebrate his life together this summer when they are all together for a family vacation.
John and Mae have been faithful subscribers to Hugh's News for a number of years. Mae often makes comments about various people she has known and loved over the years. She and John are such gracious people and it has been a pleasure corresponding with them, and I am sure I will continue to correspond with Mae.
Melvine and I visited Kailua, Hawaii and the church there, a couple of years ago, and attended morning worship service there. Chaplain Timothy Moore and his wife, Pam, and their youngest son, Joseph, took us to our church there during our visit with them at Pearl Harbor as Tim's ecclesiastical endorser. Greg and Joanne Hood are the pastors of this growing and thriving church in Kailua.
Our hearts and prayers are engaged in our love for Mae McCaul and their family. May the comfort of the Holy Spirit be yours in these says of grief.]
