It snows in Georgia on the campus of Emmanuel College

Have you ever traveled to Franklin Springs, Georgia? It is located in northeast Georgia in the rolling red clay hills that are alive with cattle, horses, vegetation, trees, ponds, farms, old-fashion grist mills, barns, and smoke houses. But there is more . . . some of the most beautiful homes you will ever see with manicured lawns are there. It is about 30 minutes from Athens where the University of Georgia is located. Nearby is Royston, the hometown of Ty Cobb and other notables. Some of the best barbecue in the known world is grilled with charcoal and flavored with hickory chips in this rural part of our state that is known for peaches. One of the lines in the Broadway Musical called "Mame" reads, "She was the sweetest peach in Georgia."

Georgia boasts of having four seasons, summer, fall, winter, and spring. The weather is ideal and we even have snow. What a welcomed sight it is for all, especially children and youth. When I was a boy growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, my mother used to make us what is called "snow ice cream." She would add some vanilla flavoring and sugar. I have discovered that a pinch of nutmeg adds immeasurably to the mixture.  What a delightful taste that is. Building snow men and women is fun too. i have done it all, even snow skiing in Washington State and Alaska when I was a chaplain in the Air Force.

I enjoyed seeing the snow scenes on the back page of On the Quad. It snowed on February 12, 2010 according to this magazine. The campus of Franklin Springs, and vicinities were covered with a blanket of snow. I have chosen to show you a photo of the stately sign that is located on US Highway 29. What an impressive sight it is, and the landscaping is professionally sculptured. It makes us all proud to see the care and love that is expressed in the beauty of the campus, the buildings, trees, shrubbery, and flowers.

Do you subscribe to On the Quad, the official Emmanuel College magazine? It just gets better and better with each issue. The Spring 2010 edition was exceptionally good. It has a message from the President, alumni news, current news stories, missions trips and service. Special guest speakers like Josh McDowell, and a great story about Chris Maxwell who is the campus pastor and director of Spiritual Life at Emmanuel College, lights up this magnificent edition. We should all be proud of Emmanuel College and the contribution it has made to our educational, social, and spiritual lives.

What a great family we have when we consider our many acquaintances and friends we have made over the years. I go back to 1952 when I went there as a freshman. That year at Emmanuel College was a turning point in my life. That was 58 years ago, and I still keep coming home to my Alma Mater.

My hunch is that you can subscribe by writing to the Editor, On the Quad, P. O. Box 129, Franklin Springs, GA 30639.
