Hurricane Irene gives us a call to prayer for God's Intevention

The latest Hurricane Irene is the biggest one in history. Its size is as large as Europe. The wind, rain, water, and ocean currents will be devastating to the people on the east coast. The governors of some 10 states have called for evacuations.

The inlet threat will be greater than at any other time in recorded history according to meteorologists. Wind blasts of 40-50 miles an hour could last up to 12 hours bringing untold destruction to property and the lives of thousands of people.

The leading meteorologist stated, "There is nothing to prevent this storm . . ."

I thought immediately, Oh, yes there is. God can. He is the Creator of this universe and at His Word winds, storms, rain and waves cease when He says "Peace be still."

I am reminded of what Jesus said, " . . . that men ought always to pray, and not to faint" (Luke 18:1, KJV). Jesus meant not only men, but women, boys and girls. Now is the time to pray about this potentially devastating hurricane for God's intervention to stop it in its path.

In John 15: 16, Jesus told His disciples, " . .  . whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in My Name, He may give it you" (KJV).

Well, how shall we pray? The Bible teaches us that the Holy Spirit is our Teacher in prayer. In that great chapter of Romans 8, the Apostle writes these guidelines for prayer:

Romans 8:26-28

26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit Himself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

27 And He that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because He maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.
KJV

As I have thought and prayed today about Hurricane Irene (Greek word for Peace), I felt impressed to write and ask you to join me in prayer for God to speak Peace to Hurricane Irene. He is the Creator of the universe and at His Word winds, storms, rain, and waves obey His Voice. He can cause this hurricane to subside, to move out east into the Atlantic and die down and give peace, comfort, and safety to all the people along the east coast of the United States of America.

Let us remember that God the Father is Sovereign, and whatever He decides is final. He may grant us our petition. I believe He can prevent this hurricane from ripping up the east coast. It is in the Name of Jesus that we offer our prayers for His divine intervention to stop this hurricane.
