I am reminded of what Isaac did in a time of famine. God spoke to him and instructed Abraham's son that he should stay where he was and not go into Egypt to purchase grain. He apparently was told to plant seed in a time of a severe famine in the land.
Read the entire chapter of Genesis 26. Some excerpts follow:
Genesis 26 [12] Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him. [13] And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great: [14] For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him. [15] For all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth. [16] And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we. [17] And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.
It is my belief that we can learn a great deal from the example of Issac in these depressed economic times.
1. We need to trust God as our Source. Egypt represents the world system of doing business. That means to get wealth by any means. Too often men will sell their souls to gain the wealth of the world. Jesus said, "For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" The tendency of carnal men is to forsake righteousness, honesty, and integrity. However, when we are directed by the Holy Spirit and instructed by the Word of God, we will know that Almighty God is keenly aware of our situation and will provide for all our needs.
2. We need never be afraid to sow in famine. It certainly requires faith to trust God in tough times like ours. If we truly believe in the promises of God to bless us, we will rely upon His promise to supply all of our need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. The enemy of our souls would have us to consume our seed on ourselves. It is only as we plant seed can God multiply it. Isaac's seed planting in a time of famine as directed by God caused him to reap one hundredfold, and he waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great.
One of my elder deacons in Birmingham, Pop Chambliss was a living example of a man who tithed during the depression of this country with a large family. He was a widower with a number of children, and he met at church a lady who was a widow with an equal number of children. He had a dental lab where he made teeth, etc. God abundantly blessed him as he tithed and gave offerings. He invested his money well, purchased land and became a millionaire. I have been to the bank with him and saw employees stop to speak to this man of wealth and grace. He had a grandson, Mike Hall, who played for the Crimson Tide of Alabama when Joe Namath played quarterback. Later, they both played professional football for the New York Jets. Mike attended our youth camp at River Springs when I was a counselor.
3. Don't forget that God's gracious hand is upon you and His favor will flow in your life for good. Place your trust in God, work hard, tithe your income, and give offerings as a seed you plant out of your need. I am learning that it is only what I give to God can He bless and multiply. In the story about the feeding of the 5,000 men by Jesus with five loaves and two fish, we learn that they are never enough until we give them to Jesus. The lad gave all he had to Jesus. He took the loaves and fish and blessed them, broke them, and the disciples gave and gave food until all were filled, and they had 12 baskets of food left over.
4. Be led in your giving by the Holy Spirit. If you are married, make sure you talk it over with your spouse what you as a couple should give and where. You cannot give to every cause or every ministry. Use common sense and wisdom that the Holy Spirit and the Word of God offers you.
You may be thinking, "I have not done as well as Isaac." That may be true of many of us. Whatever the situation go to God by staying in the Word, and continue in believing prayer. The Holy Spirit will direct you in the planting of your seed.
