The number seven (7) in Holy Scriptures carries with it the idea of completeness or perfection

There is no doubt about it, it will be impossible for mankind to exhaust the richness found in the Number Seven.

One of the most significant uses of the phrase seven times is discovered in these words of the Lord Jesus Christ recorded in Matthew 18.21: “Then came Peter to Him (Jesus), and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.”

Peter goes beyond the rabbinic rule of three times and extends it to seven. But Jesus answered, “Not seven, but seventy times seven.” Jesus taught that forgiveness is qualitative, not quantitative. Forgiveness takes the place of revenge. A person who is in Christ, and Christ is in him, can never reach the limits of love. The Apostle Paul explains it best when he wrote, “Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law” (Romans 13:8, KJV). Eugene H. Peterson in his paraphrase of this Scripture renders this verse like this: “Don't run up debts, except for the huge debt of love you owe each other. When you love others, you complete what the law has been after all along” (Romans 13:8, The Message).
