How to handle disappointment when you are out-voted and shouted down

The highlight of 2011 for me was the IPHC Chaplains, Spouses, and Friends Retreat at Founders Inn, Virginia Beach, VA. Approximately 60 persons were in attendance. It may go down in history as the best of all retreats we have ever had, and we have had some good ones.

We were blessed to have two outstanding speakers:

Chaplain, Major General Cecil R. Richardson, Chief of Air Force Chaplains

The Rev. Dr. Vinson Synan, Dean Emeritus, School of Divinity, Regent University

Chaplain Richardson gave us sound advice as well as words of wisdom that leaders need. Let me share with you just one of them.

He made real the story of the 12 spies Moses sent to look over things in the Promised Land and bring back a report.

Ten (10) of the men brought in the majority report. However, Joshua and Caleb challenged the people to claim what God had promised them. "God has already promised us the land. Let's go take it."

"Leaders need to listen to the minority. The majority can be wrong--horribly wrong. If you. are a leader, listen to the minority. They might have the mind of God.

"Even if our report is not popular, we still have to speak up and call it like it is. An important part of being a spiritual leader is standing up for what's right, and speaking out when something is wrong."

Now, here is the crucial issue that deals with attitudes and steadfastness of purpose in revealing one's real character. "Even though Joshua and Caleb were out-voted and shouted down, they didn't start a splinter group or to into Canaan on their own. What happens when a person loses often tells more about that person than when he or she wins."

Think about it. Meditate upon it. Selah!
