Chuck Swindoll told the story about how mother's can influence the outcome of football games. You know Sunday, May 11, 2008, is Mother's Day.
A mother had forgotten to pick up her boys at the Texas Stadium in Dallas. As soon as she walked in the door of her home, the telephone rang. The person on the other end asked, "Are you Mrs. Brown?" She responded by saying "Yes, I am, why do you ask?"
We would like for you to come pick up your eleven boys because they are beating the Cowboys 30 to 0.
Don't forget to call your mother on Sunday. Better still, if she is still living, go see her and take her out to Sunday dinner after church.
Scripture text for today is recorded in Genesis 26:1-6
"There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, in Gerar.
Then the Lord appeared to him and said, "Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you.
"Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.
"And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands, and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;
"Because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept my charge. My commandments, My statues, and My laws."
So, Isaac dwelt in Gerar.
Editor's Commentary on Scripture text written in Genesis 26:1-6
Those who follow God and obey Him will face opposition in life. If you are not facing obstacles and attacks from Satan, it may be that you are not doing anything of significance to stir up the opposition.
Although Isaac was the son of Abraham, the father of nations, he was not exempt from the pressure and troubles in life. The same scenario is true for those who are Christians. This Scripture passage tells us that there was a famine in the land where Isaac lived. He wanted to go down to Egypt to purchase grain for his family. No doubt he thought he could get a better deal down in Egypt. However, the Lord appeared to him and told him not to go to Egypt, but stay where he was, plant his seed in the dry, dusty soil, and trust God for the harvest.
To the mind of modern man those instructions may seem foolish. But that is how the carnal mind thinks. The Bible says that the mind of man is not a believer, and therefore, must be transformed and renewed.
Isaac had a choice to make. Choices always have consequences either for good or evil. Isaac passed the test and proved that he was indeed a son of Abraham, that great man of faith.
"Then Isaac sowed in the land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the Lord blessed him" (v. 16).
Let me tell you, a hundredfold return is a wonderful thing in good times; but, it is a supernatural thing in times of drought and times of economic recessions or depressions.
When times are hard and difficult plant seed as God may direct you. You can never expect to reap until you plant your seed. You are at your best when everything around you is at its worst. Never give up. "Tough times never last; tough people do" (Robert Schuller).
Isaac was living among people who despised him because of his success. So, he had to move. In the process of moving, he had to dig wells that his father had dug, and the Philistines and filled up. Over and over again, he had to give them up because the people said, "Those wells are ours."
Finally, Isaac came to a place where he dug a well that had good water, and the people did not complain. He called that place Rehoboth. He called it that because the word means, "For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land" (v.22).
For some of you today, you are facing opposition in your life and ministry. You may be sick in your body and wonder if you will ever get well. Some have lost loved ones, and you are grieving and wondering why this has happened. For many others, you have bills piling up and wonder how in the world you will ever pay them, and get out of debt.
Let me tell you, "Help is on the way."
God has promised never to leave you, nor forsake you. He is your helper, you need not fear what man may do unto you (Hebrews 13: 5, 6).
You may feel you are standing in the shadows today of life. I would remind you that those shadows are a symbol of victory to come. You are where God wants you to be. Look up. Cry out to God and He will bring you deliverance. You are at your best when everything around you is at its worst.

2008 Memorial Day Sunday Observance, May 25, 2008
On Memorial Day each year the President of the United States places a wreath before the Tomb of the Unknowns. This custom is observed on behalf of the American people as a mark of gratitude and respect for the men and women who have died for the cause of freedom. It is because of their service and sacrifice we live in the strongest, freest, greatest nation in the history of the world. We are the benefactors of their courage, commitment to duty, and their sacrifice.
As we commemorate Memorial Day this year let us reflect on the men and women who have died in the defense of America. Let us be grateful to God that He has given us the privilege to be citizens of the country they served.
It was Patrick Henry who once publicly declared, “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason people of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom to worship here.”
Let us reaffirm the values that have made America great. We want our country to remain as a “city on a hill” that will be a beacon for the free exercise of religion and the freedom of speech. We must maintain our belief that "we are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
I trust that your local church congregation will have a special Memorial Day worship service that day, Sunday, May 25, 2008.
Memorial Day celebrations offer congregations across the United States an opportunity to do three things:
1. To remember those men and women who have paid the supreme sacrifice for our country and our freedom as a nation.
2. To pray for their families who continue to feel their loss.
3. To pray for our troops who serve today at home and abroad, as well as their families.
It was General George W. Casey Jr., Army Chief of Staff and a former commander of the Multinational Force in Iraq who said. "Behind every fallen comrade, there's a family that remains an important part of our community."
Recently Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff wrote, "We couldn't defend this nation without our Chaplains. The compassionate care you provide for our fighting men and women -- and their families -- remains vital to our combat readiness.
"You are the ear we want to bend, the helping hand we want to grasp, the broad shoulder upon which we want to lean. You serve us and our spiritual needs every bit as much as you serve the national security needs of this great country.”
The IPHC has some of the finest and most dedicated chaplains in the Army. Navy. and Air Force. You should be justly proud of them. Visit our IPHC Chaplains Ministries website at: www.chaplains.iphc.org. Check out where our chaplains are in the world.
Thank you for your promotion of Memorial Day this year.
Lonnie Rex will celebrate his 80th birthday on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 11, 2008
When Lonnie Rex was nine years old he contacted Polio. The doctors thought he would die, and if he lived he would not live to be more than thirteen years of age. They believed he would have brain damage and be a cripple should he live.
However, his father and mother believed in divine healing and they prayed and trusted God to heal their son. Scores of people joined in prevailing, believing prayer for his healing. His mother and her sister took care of Lonnie around the clock and kept his legs wrapped in warm towels. God did heal him, spared his life, and made him a blessing to this world.
God always has the final Word. He is still Lord. Nothing is impossible when we put our trust in Him.
I know of no other man who has been a part of more international evangelistic and humanitarian ministries than Lonnie Rex. He worked for Oral Roberts in his radio and television ministry, and fund raising efforts by writing letters, as well as helping evangelists like Billy James Hargis and T. L. Osborne, to name a few. He was the founder of the David Livingstone Foundation, and has provided humanitarian assistance to many struggling countries in times of natural disasters. He has built orphanages, has provided medical supplies, medicines, ambulances, and equipment, and has built hospitals to take care of hurting and sick people of many cultures and nations.
He has had audiences with the Pope, and with leaders of many foreign countries. He has asked God for 10 more years to live and to be in health even as his soul prospers. He only wants to bless others and assist in ministries around the world.
What Bill Gaither is to
great Southern Gospel Singing, Lonnie Rex is to great Pentecostal
Holiness
Conventions / General Conferences choirs and orchestras.
Wouldn't it be grand if the leadership that is planning General Conference in Greensboro, NC, in July 2009, would invite Lonnie and the Lonnie Rex General Conference to do an encore by singing once again, "I'll See You in the Rapture," "Until Then," and "When We All Get to Heaven."
That's the kind of music our people love and it will bring shouting and praising God, and lift the rafters or roof of the convention center.
If you would like to call Lonnie to wish him a happy birthday here is the telephone number: 1-281-251-4047.
