Late Sunday Night News Special

An emergency Prayer Call

From Pastor Joel and Janelle McGraw
Faith Chapel, Huntsville, Alabama
Sunday evening, December 30, 2007
Missionaries and turbulence in Eldoret and Nairobi, Kenya

Joel McGraw sent the following e-mail to me Sunday evening, December 30, 2007.  I called to confirm the message and to see if there was any additional information.

Joel wrote, “A call came this afternoon from Marie Hollingsworth in Eldoret, Kenya, asking for immediate prayer by each of us and others you choose to contact.

Winston and Marie Hollingsworth and other missionaries, including Philip and Gailya List in Nairobi are in danger. Marie says this includes Annette Anderson who is presently serving on a short-term mission assignment in an orphanage in another part of Kenya.

The national election in Kenya is accompanied with rioting, looting, violence and total unrest in the country.

Marie Hollingsworth reported that missionaries are not allowed to leave their homes or compounds.

The Hollingsworths have been confined to their home for four days and are in need of food and water. Please pray for their safety and provisions, and for rioting to cease.

May I ask you to share this prayer request with others including some who may not have access to e-mail or the Internet?

Joel McGraw will report further information as he gets it.

[Editor’s note: while preparing this special news report I got a telephone call from Philip List, Jr. He shared with me other information orally and then sent me a copy of his mother’s (Gailya Williams List) e-mail. I am copying and pasting it for you now:

“While the people are waiting for the Election results the people are demonstrating and rioting and fighting and causing disruption in different areas and suburbs in the different towns and cities in Kenya.  They do not like it because it is taking so long for the ballots to be counted.  Some areas have not let sent them in.  The people are becoming suspicious of electoral rigging.  Two people were killed, one man had his finger chopped off, fires are being set, shopping stalls have been destroyed, shops have been broken into, people are being beaten up and some people are already celebrating the election of their choice of president even though the announcement has not yet been made. We missionaries have been staying home these days, except for a brief visit to YaYa Center to get some groceries.  Public transportation has been disrupted. Nairobi is full of soldiers we are told on patrol.  The slum areas are worse where there seems to be more freedom to work havoc because of lack of control in those areas.  The Kukhuya have told the Luyahs to get out of certain areas and the Luyahs have told the Kukhuya's to get out of certain areas.  The tribal issue seems to be rising again.

“We feel at peace while we wait for the people to settle down.  We have the Lord with us.  We slept good last night.  We feel for Angie and Jim and family as they are across town from us and also near a slum area.  We would appreciate your prayer support at this time.

“Lots of love to all, Gailya”

Hugh’s News will be available to publish the news as it comes in.

Right now, I am in Eden, NC, visiting family and friends. We are spending our last night here at the Hampton Inn in Eden. Today, we worshiped at the Draper Pentecostal Holiness Church, Melvine’s home church.  Pastor Jonathan Todd invited me to address the congregation and to give an update report on our IPHC Military chaplains.

I am happy to report that Melissa Adams was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy as a Chaplain Candidate on Thursday, December 20, 2007. She is a 2007 graduate of Emmanuel College, was licensed as a minister of the Gospel in the Georgia Conference in June, and is enrolled and taking classes at our Graduate School at Southwestern Christian University. We are very proud of Melissa. She is a resident of Barnesville, GA.

Will you receive this prayer of Benediction for our missionaries and the people of Kenya?

Psalm 27:5, KJV 5 For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion: in the secret of His tabernacle shall He hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.

Your friend in all seasons,

Hugh Holmes Morgan
