Hugh's News Man of the Year for 2007
There are many people who through the course of a lifetime walk in and out of
our lives, but only a few persons make a lasting impression that continues to linger in our hearts and minds.
This year’s recipient is like that. He has been and continues to be an exceptional friend for whom I have the highest regard and respect. He is first of all a Spirit-filled Christian, a man whose confidence and trust is anchored in the Lord Jesus Christ. He is a rock-solid family man, a churchman, and a professional in his medical career field. I have known him since he began his private practice in 1975. Melvine, my wife, has known him since high school days when they met at a youth camp in North Carolina.
He is a man whose spirit is open to the Lord. The Psalmist describes this man as one who has clean hands and a pure heart (Psalm 24:4). He is indeed a blessed man. The first Psalm describes this kind of man who “ . . . delights is in the law of the Lord; and in His law does he meditate day and night” (Psalm 1:2, KJV ). He delights in doing God’s will. As a blessed man he has learned the secret and importance of laying up treasures in heaven. Those are spiritual riches that money cannot purchase and thieves cannot steal nor take away.
He was born in Siler City, NC, in 1940. His parents, who will be named or revealed later in this special tribute, were devout Christian people and members of the Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church. He has two brothers and one sister. It was while he was a student at Emmanuel College that he met the beautiful young lady who would become his wife. That love relationship continues today after forty-two years of marriage.
As a volunteer in the Army, he served our country with honor and distinction for three years in a special field of medical service as a non-commissioned officer, and was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ, and Frankfort, Germany.
It was in 1970, that he graduated from Jacksonville State University. Following
his graduation, he became a science teacher at Stockbridge High School in
Stockbridge, GA, 1970-71. He taught chemistry, physics and biology.
Eager to fulfill his dream to be a dentist, he enrolled in North Carolina School of Dentistry in 1971, and graduated in 1975, with the DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree. Shortly afterwards, he began his private dental practice in Franklin Springs, GA, which continues to this day. He is a member of the American Dental Association, Georgia Dental Association and Eastern District Society.
He is known to everyone who has ever sat in his dental chair as “Painless Dr. Don.” That is a wonderful and comforting reality, but equally important is the fact that this gracious, gregarious personality in this man who always meets you with a smile and a magnanimous spirit. Most of all, when all is said and done, you know you have been in the hands of a master in dentistry (both the art and science), and that precision work has been done with proficiency and professional care.
His involvement in the ministry and work of the church has been exceptional. He served as the superintendent of the Sunday school, choir director and deacon of the Atlanta Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1965-66. He was a deacon of the Franklin Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church for twenty-five years.
As a staunch supporter of Christian higher education, he served on the Emmanuel College Board of Regents, 1967-80, as well as President of Emmanuel College Alumni Association, 1976-80. In addition, he has served as Vice Chairman of the Board of Regents for several years.
His interest in the matters of the church has gone far beyond the local church, and he served with dedication and decisiveness for eight years on the Planning and Budgetary Committee, as well as on the Church Education Board of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church for four years.
His involvement in world missions and love for missionaries has been demonstrated by his free dental care for IPHC missionaries for the last thirty-two years that would have cost a total of several hundred thousand dollars.
But wait, his love for Global evangelism has motivated him to make many mission trips to Ukraine, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and the Philippines. He has provided free dental service to children in orphanages in Guatemala, Costa Rica
and Ukraine.
Now on a lighter side it is important for me to reveal that one of his talents and
unique gifts is his annual Elvis and Friends Concerts at the John Swails Convocation Center on the Campus of Emmanuel College. He impersonates and sings exactly like Elvis Presley did. Southern Gospel quartets, trios and special soloists join with him in giving of their time and talents to raise money for the David Livingstone Foundation. Over the past six years, he has raised $75, 000 for orphanages established by this outstanding foundation. In addition to raising money for this foundation, he has served as a member of that governing board since 1994.
Last but not least, he is the President and CEO of Dental Careers Foundation, a Dental Assistant School.
You have waited long enough . . . and, now I give you his name.
It is with great pleasure and joy that I now present to you the Hugh’s News Man of the Year for 2007.
He is none other than James Donald Brady, DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery).
Donald Brady, DDS
Dr. Don Brady's parents were Johnny and Irene Brady of Siler City, NC. His siblings were named Wayne, Janice, and Kenneth. Kenneth died when he was only 27 years old as the result of a tragic motorcycle accident when Don was in dental school.
Dr. Don Brady is married to the former Miss Sue McCollum of Atlanta, GA.
They have one daughter, Ashley Elizabeth Brady White, married to Seth White, the son of Dr. Ron and Carol White. Ashley recently completed her Ed.S degree. Don says, “I am not a grandfather yet, but I am trusting God to change that soon.”
