President James D. Leggett accepts the pastorate of Holmes Memorial Church

It is with a sense of joy and gratitude to Almighty God that I have the privilege of announcing that Bishop James D. Leggett, president of Holmes Bible College, will become the pastor of Holmes Memorial Church on Sunday, August 14.

In a memo to the Board of Trustees of Holmes Bible College he shared this news last week:

"I have accepted the pastorate of the Holmes Memorial Church effective Sunday, August 14, 2011.

"It is a strong feeling of mine that God’s purpose is to bring the college and church together. After I arrived, I was hoping it could be done without me assuming the pastorate. It looks like it is best to pastor the church for at least one year. I will be preaching mostly on Sunday mornings, and I have reserved a Sunday a month if needed to represent the college.

"Let us pray together both for the college and the church."

James D. Leggett, President, Holmes Bible College

It will be a new day for the church and Holmes Bible College.

It will be a new beginning.

It will be a grand rally of uniting the people again with the college.

It will quicken the hopes of the congregation for a brighter future and a new day.

It will be a declaration of the power and wisdom of God to bring the church and college together in unity.

It will bring the church body to an alive college campus with new leadership that is dynamic and relevant.

It will provide sound Biblical preaching to the church, college, and community.

It will stir the people to daring faith and expectations for a glorious future.

It will set in motion the abundant resources of God to be released to provide for the sale of the property and building the new church on the new campus of Holmes Bible College.

One church leader wrote: "It's the right thing to do. The church and the college should never have separated. It is fitting and functional for the church and the college to have one head. I pray the church property will sell quickly and that a new church can be built within a year on the new campus."

It is this editor's opinion that the church and the college are like a hand and glove. They were designed for provision, protection and power, and the proclamation of the Bible, the sole authority for our faith and conduct in this life. It is time to rejoice and be glad that Bishop Leggett has worked successfully with the leadership of Holmes Memorial Church; and together they have come to this covenant agreement. This merger is the work of the Holy Spirit in the minds and hearts of men of faith, and is a foretaste of greater things to come.

It is a win-win relationship for both the church and college. The current congregation will have a new church facility on the campus of Holmes Bible College where they can worship on one floor level without stairs. The college will have a facility that will enable them to have many events to hold the crowds that will come to the Fall Revival, Feast of Ingathering, Founder's Week, Lecture Series, Drama and Musical Productions, Commencement, Camp Meeting, and much more. It will provide for needed classrooms in a growing Bible college.  It will provide a center of worship and learning with an optimum use of the facility throughout the week.

Holmes Memorial Church is located on the corner of Buncombe Road and Briggs Avenue, Greenville, SC 29609-5325. Telephone: 1-864-232-9180.

Let me invite everyone living within 100 miles of Holmes Bible College in Greenville to join Melvine and me for Dr. James D. Leggett's inaugural service and sermon as the new pastor on Sunday, August 14, 2011, at 11 a. m.  This will be a key historical moment in the 21st Century, and you can be a part of it. Let us do all we can to lift up the hands of Pastor James D. Leggett and show our support of this wonderful congregation of God's people.
