At a luncheon following the wedding ceremony, the father of the groom asked his son, the groom, to take his bride’s right hand, and place his right hand on top of it. Then, the father said, “This is the last time you will ever have the upper hand.” More than 250 guests burst forth into laughter and agreement.
The Scriptures for today are recorded in the Book of Jeremiah 50:2, 11
Jeremiah 50:2
Declare ye among the nations, and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces.
KJV
Verse 11
Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers of mine heritage, because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls. KJV
Editor’s Commentary on today’s Scriptures written in the Book of Jeremiah 50:2, 11
As I have read again the Book of Jeremiah I am struck with the amount of coverage is given in this prophetic book to Babylon. It seems to me that as much space is given to Babylon as to all the other nations combined. All other conflicts and wars with the previously mentioned nations pale into insignificance in comparison to the disastrous take over and destruction by Nebuchadnezzar. However, we have in our Scripture text for today these sobering words, “Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces” (50:2).
Here we learn that their god, who claimed to be creator and king, was discovered to be false, and a completely impotent and useless deity in the presence of the great and powerful Yahweh.
Jeremiah’s countrymen falsely accused him of loving Babylon more than Judah because he urged them to surrender. Their allegations proved to be false. Jeremiah didn’t allow Babylon to get out of the fire of destruction. To them he said, “Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers of mine heritage, because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls.” God said through His prophet Jeremiah that “Babylon shall sink and not rise from the catastrophe that I will bring upon her. And they shall be weary” (Jeremiah 50:64).
The enemies of God and His people often laugh and jeer at them. It has been said, “He who laughs best, laughs last.” However, we know from reading and studying the Word of God, the Bible, that God always has the last Word.
I love Eugene H. Peterson’s rendering of Ephesians 1:20-23, “All this energy issues from Christ: God raised Him from death and set Him on a throne in deep heaven, 21 in charge of running the universe, everything from galaxies to governments, no name and no power exempt from His rule. And not just for the time being, but forever. 22 He is in charge of it all, has the final Word on everything. At the center of all this, Christ rules the church. 23 The church, you see, is not peripheral to the world; the world is peripheral to the church. The church is Christ's body, in which He speaks and acts, by which He fills everything with his presence” (The Message).
It will be the people of God, those who have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus, who will laugh and rejoice in the end. The enemies of God and his people will be silenced in that day.
Could it be that we as a nation are now on a fast track to thinking and believing that our existence as a nation is independent of God as did the nation of Babylon? God’s Word teaches that there is far more to our lives than the here and now. There is a Moral Absolute that continues to monitor the affairs of nations, and far beyond the temporal gods of this world. Jesus Christ is Lord and is the Sovereign of this universe.
Our nation appears to be racing after empty humanism and false philosophies. We were never meant “to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds” (Romans 12:2).
Let us pray continually the prayer that Jesus taught His disciples to pray . . . and a part of that prayer is that “God’s kingdom will come and His will may be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Mark 6:10).

Dr. Ronald W. Carpenter, Sr., is a native of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, where he was raised in the Pentecostal Holiness Church and called into the ministry at the age of 16. After 16 years of pastoring and 11 years as conference superintendent in the Upper South Carolina Conference, he was elected Assistant General Superintendent with the portfolio of Evangelism USA. In August 2005, he was elected Vice-Chairman of the IPHC. He has served as the Executive Director of Evangelism USA for the past twelve years. He has also served as Chairman of the Board of Chaplains Ministries.
Bishop Carpenter’s greatest desire is to be of service in the kingdom of God. Because of this willingness to serve and his giftings as teacher and preacher, Dr. Carpenter is much in demand for revivals, seminars, campmeetings, and other speaking engagements. He and his wife, Nan, have two children and five grandchildren.
[Editor’s Note: Hugh’s News continues to be: “The electronic flagship of communication serving IPHC Ministries and the body of Christ worldwide.” I was privileged to have worked closely with Dr. Ronald W. Carpenter, Sr., now our Presiding Bishop, for twelve years when he was Chairman, Chaplains Ministries, IPHC. I know his heart of love for the people of the IPHC, and his passion to serve his generation with excellence as an anointed man of God. It is his burden and vision to tap into the 21st century communications revolution for the IPHC. He will utilize all of the cutting edge technology to communicate effectively to our leaders and laymen (women) in meaningful ways that will bolster our spirits, build our faith, and give us a new hope that will never die. He will save on the wear and tear of his body as well as the cost of traveling because he can come into our homes, offices, and other places where we may be with a computer. I am honored to promote our Presiding Bishop’s ministry and work. He and Nan are dear friends of Melvine and me.]
Bishop James D. Leggett will be inaugurated as the fifth President of Holmes Bible College, on Thursday evening, October 1, 2009

President James D. Leggett
The Holmes Bible College Board of Trustees and faculty are pleased to announce the inauguration of Bishop James D. Leggett as the fifth President President of Holmes Bible Bible College, on Thursday, October 1, 2009, at 7 p. m., at Holmes Memorial Church, 1215 Buncombe Road in Greenville, SC.
Bishop Leggett’s inauguration will be in conjunction with the annual Feast of Ingathering sponsored by the Women’s Ministries of the IPHC.
The Rev. Dr. G. Earl Beatty served for more than a year as the interim president after the resignation of Dr. Richard Waters who had served as President of Holmes Bible College for 12 years. Dr. Beatty has been named the Vice President for Academic Development and will continue to serve the new president and the college.
Bishop Leggett has been active in the leadership of several church organizations. He presently serves as chairman of the World Pentecostal Fellowship. He served six years as co-chair of the Pentecostal/Charismatic Churches of North America. He is president of the Evangelical/Pentecostal family in Christian Churches Together. He also is a member of the executive committee of International Charismatic Consultation and the executive committee of the Global Forum. He is a member of the board of directors for the National Association of Evangelicals and is a member of Mission America. He is known, loved and respected around the world in Pentecostal circles. We are highly honored to have this distinguished leader leading Holmes Bible College.
Could it be that the man who has been chosen to be the president of Holmes Bible College will find this new challenge the greatest achievement and most fulfilling ministry of his life? We know he has proved to be a strong Christian leader, a Bible scholar, an excellent writer, a great preacher, a compassionate and loving pastor, an exceptional administrator, a conference superintendent, a general official over Evangelism USA and the Extension Loan Fund, and the presiding Bishop of the IPHC. Notwithstanding all of that, he is a known and respected leader in the Church World, not only among Pentecostals and Charismatics, but Evangelicals as well.
Now is the time for all of us to rally around our new president of Holmes Bible College with our prayers and financial support, and by promoting the college to everyone we meet. It is my sincere belief that the future for Holmes is brighter today than at any other time in recent history. Could it be that God is positioning Holmes Bible College to rise up again to surpass the achievements of the past? I believe it can happen.
Hugh’s News goes on record in supporting the new president of Holmes Bible College in Greenville, SC. It has been my privilege to have known him since he was in high school at the Holmes Academy. I was much older than he when I became a student at Holmes Bible College having worked for the Southern Railroad for two years after I graduated from high school, attended my first year of college at Emmanuel College, having served for three years in the United States Marine Corps as a non-commissioned officer, and attended one year at Asbury College in Wilmore, KY. He has been and continues to be my friend through all the intervening years. And now, the Lord in His providence is allowing me to serve him and the college as a member of the Board of Trustees for Holmes Bible College.
It is my belief and firm conviction that Pentecostal Preacher Boys (Young Men) will be attracted to Holmes Bible College because of the gift of preaching God has given to Bishop James D. Leggett. We must produce Biblical Preachers who are full of Holy Spirit and will boldly proclaim the whole counsel of God.

Announcing the inauguration of Dr. Mark Rutland as the third President of Oral Roberts University, Friday, September 25, 2009
Mark Rutland, Ph. D., Third President of ORU
The Oral Roberts University Board of Trustees and Faculty are pleased to announce the inauguration of Mark Rutland, Ph. D. as the third President of Oral Roberts University on Friday, September 25, 2009, at 1 p.m. in the ORU Mabee Center.
It is my understanding that Presiding Bishop and Mrs. Ronald W. Carpenter, Sr., and other members of the Executive Committee of the Council of Bishops have been invited to attend. It is significant that the Pentecostal Holiness Church continues to be aligned with this great Charismatic and Pentecostal University. Oral Roberts and Dr. R. O. Corvin were great friends who started this university. Dr. Corvin served as the first Provost of the university. Dr. R. O. Corvin was the founder of Southwestern College, now Southwestern Christian University, and Oral Roberts was instrumental in helping to purchase the property; and, he and Lee Braxton gave $100,000 to build the first administrative offices.
My good friends, Dr. Lonnie and Betty Rex, have been invited to a dinner banquet on the 60th Floor of the City of Faith on Thursday evening, September 24, 2009, where Oral Roberts will be present, Dr. Mark Rutland and his family, members of the original Board of Regents, and current members of the Board of Trustees of Oral Roberts University. I am confident my good friend and former classmate at Emmanuel College, Jack Shaw and his father, W. E. "Erby" Shaw will be in attendance, as well as Jack’s wife, Jane. Mr. W. E. “Erby” Shaw celebrated his 95th birthday on August 18, 2009. Jack served on the Board of Regents at ORU as well. If I recall correctly, the late Rev. Mr. T. D. Irvin, from Memphis, TX, was also a member of the original Board of Regents at ORU.
The Congregation of Flatwoods Pentecostal Holiness Church to Celebrate their Centennial on Sunday, October 4, 2009
Pastors Phillip and Inez Hart, now into their 52nd year in ministry at Flat Woods Pentecostal Holiness Church in Elberton County, GA, invite you to their 100th Anniversary Celebration of their church, on Sunday, October 4, 2009. The morning worship service will begin at 10 o’clock. There will be special singing, including Greta Campbell and Pat Welch from Greenville, SC. Greta is the host of the flag-ship program of WGGS TV 16 that is called "Nite Line." She was Hugh’s News Woman of the Year in 2006.
The families of the founders and former pastors of the church, along with the families of charter members will be honored. Presiding Bishop Ronald W. Carpenter, Sr. will be the feature preacher for this Centennial Celebration.
There will be dinner on the grounds in the lovely fellowship hall.

2009 NAE Chaplains Commission Training Retreat for Chaplains in Branson, MO, August 20-23, 2009
Melvine and I were privileged to be a part of the 2009 Chaplains Training Retreat in Branson, MO, Thursday – Sunday, August 20-23, 2009, at the Village at Indian Point on beautiful Tablerock Lake in Branson, MO. Some 52 chaplains, chaplain candidates, spouses and instructors were in attendance. The theme was “Moral Courage.” Once again the community pitched in to support and encourage our chaplains and spouses.
A number of local pontoon “Captains” and their spouses met us for our first outing for a ride on Tablerock Lake. It was a lovely evening. The weather was ideal and a slight breeze blew as we talked with those aboard each pontoon boat. It was indeed a time of making new friendships and relaxing from the busy schedules that often tend to overwhelm our chaplains.
Chaplain, Major General Cecil Richardson, Chief of Air Force Chaplain Service, led off the training Thursday evening by sharing his personal story of how God brought him to Himself and a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. He shared that moral courage is not something we are born with – it is something we are anointed with. It comes from a decision, a commitment, a determination to do what is right because it is right to do so, and it must become the foundation of our ministry. And it can come only from spending time alone with God. Chaplain Richardson is an ordained minister of the Assemblies of God.
Melvine and I were privileged to share a condo with Chaplain Cecil Richardson. We had separate bedrooms with our own bathrooms, showers and tubs. We had a large kitchen with the refrigeration furnished with food for three days. We had a dining room and a family room, with a balcony that overlooked the lake below. Melvine prepared breakfast for us, and we enjoyed eating breakfast, drinking coffee, and talking. It is a good thing for an endorser to get to know the Chief of Chaplains of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. It was a special time for us to get to know this man of God who leads the Air Force Chaplaincy.
Retired Army Chaplain (Colonel) Herman Keizer, Retired, continued the training by talking about the cost of moral courage. He posited the question, “What does Jesus want us to say and what does Jesus desire of us?” We must be willing to speak to “the system” and therefore we must spend the time to understand the system. We must be willing to shine the light of the Gospel as a sharp laser light that shows and helps us to change the evils in our culture.
Navy Chaplain Jason DiPinto, Lieutenant with the Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune shared his insights from his recent Afghanistan deployment with the Marines. It was remarkable to get the mature and insightful analysis of what happens to Marines in war from one of our newest chaplains.
Retired Army Chaplain (Colonel) John Schumacher and I, along with our wives, shared insights from our experiences as military chaplains. I did a breakout session with two VA hospital chaplains. I was the one who learned from their experiences. I needed to hear their stories since I am the Chairman, Endorsers Conference for Veterans Affairs Chaplaincy.
I was not able to visit with Jim Bakker. I was told later that he had been invited to go to Heritage USA for a conference sponsored by Rick Joyner. I did meet the Mayor of Branson who came to our meeting place to welcome us to Branson. She is Mrs. Raeanne Presley. She is going to get me a good telephone number for Jim.
Hugh’s brother-in-law, Rosamond “R. H.” McDuff, 83, died on Saturday, September 5, 2009
R. H. McDuff was born in Birmingham, Alabama, February 8, 1926. He was a member of the Greatest Generation. He answered the call to serve our country during World War II, and served with honor and distinction in the Army Air Corps. He was able to travel extensively overseas, and often talked about those places, e. g., Formosa, now known as Taiwan. He loved adventure and welcomed new challenges and opportunities. He took flying lessons, and became a pilot of small aircraft. He often made cross-country trips like flying from Birmingham to Miami.
His father, Fred Hale McDuff was Chief of Police of Birmingham, and Sherriff of Jefferson County, January 1935 to January 1939. From the oral reports I have heard, Mr. Fred H. McDuff was a man of integrity and could not be bribed. He was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in North Birmingham.
It is little wonder that R. H. would be interested in being a law enforcement officer and follow in the footsteps of his distinguished father. He did serve for a few years on the Birmingham City Police Force, before going to work for ACIPCO (American Cast Iron Pipe Company) as a computer programmer.
I was either 12 or 13 years of age when I met R. H. He started dating my older sister, Mary Evelyn Morgan, and they fell in love and were married on August 8, 1947, at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church when it was located in Norwood. The Rev. Mr. O. N. Todd, Sr. performed their wedding ceremony. My sister was a beautiful bride with black, naturally curly hair, dark brown eyes, and olive complexion. Not only was she beautiful, but equally intelligent. She was a National Honor Society student, and was a member of Good Writers Club of America. She had a beautiful hand-writing skill.
R. H. purchased a brand new Jeep after he was honorable discharged from the military. He taught me how to drive it. He had a lot of patience and trust. It had a floor, gear shift transmission, and I had to learn how to use the clutch. I remember the vehicle jerking until I mastered the control of the clutch with my left foot. It was a matter of learning coordination. He was patient and an excellent teacher. Later, when I turned 16 years of age, he allowed me to use his Chevrolet Club Coupe to take my driver’s exam, and low and behold, I passed it the first time.
R. H. was a rock-solid family man and a committed Christian. He was a man of integrity and honesty. His word was his bond.
He was an exceptional friend and brother-in-law. He became the brother I never had biologically. He was a careful listener. He knew how to keep confidences, and whatever you told him in confidence was as safe as the gold in Fort Knox.
It was my observation that R. H. was at home no matter where he went -- and he would go out of his way to make others feel the same. He was jovial, light-hearted and generous; there was nothing phony or calculating about him. He never had a hidden agenda. He kept everything on top of the table. When he engaged anyone in conversation, he or she could count on his undivided attention. He understood that people truly mattered.
God blessed R. H. and Mary Evelyn McDuff with five wonderful children, and sons-in-law, and daughters-in-law, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. I will miss him greatly, especially the regular telephone calls we had, and visits we were able to make through the years. From the day he called to tell me he had inoperable cancer that has metastasized, he lived only seven weeks. We talked at length about his life and impending death, and prayed together. He was a Christian, and was ready to die. He and I had no unfinished business. Our relationship was meaningful and fruitful.
R. H. McDuff has now joined that company of witnesses in heaven who are enjoying the presence of Jesus, and he is a member of that great cloud of witnesses who cheer us on in our journey here below. Here is the Scripture that describes in part where I think he is now:
Hebrews 12:22-24
22 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, 23 to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, 24 to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
NIV
An endorsement for Hugh’s News by Bishop Frank Tunstall, Superintendent, Heartland Conference
Three things come to mind as I think about Hugh H. Morgan’s retirement years. First, it has been in your retirement years that you have served with such distinction as director of IPHC Chaplains Ministries.
You caught the vision of Hugh’s News in your retirement years. When you should have been in your rocking chair, you have developed this cutting edge electronic news service that has been such a blessing to the body of Christ in the IPHC family and beyond. I honor how you have shouldered both the work load and the cost to send Hugh’s News around the world. We in the Heartland join with so many of your friends in seeing its value. We are happy to be financial sponsors with you in this ministry. I trust many others have been recognizing the blessing too and sending financial contributions. The cause really is worthy.
The third is that in your retirement years you have been elevated to national leadership in chaplaincy ministry. My recollection is that you are now the vice chairman of the NAE Chaplains Commission and chairman of the endorsers conference for the whole Veterans Affairs Chaplaincy program in the U.S., a part of our government that includes some 6,000 chaplains. I understand this means you now have a significant influence on the next generation of V.A. chaplains – people who will be serving for years to come the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of our men and women who have worn the uniform with pride.
It interests me greatly that these high responsibilities have come to you from your Lord in your golden years. Said another way, some of the most significant contributions of your entire ministry have blossomed in a season when you no doubt thought your lifetime of service was winding down. Wow!
I think there’s a vital life lesson here; a Reader’s Digest kind of story appropriate for tens of thousands of retirees.
You have certainly brought a correction to my perception of retirement. I thought it meant a life free from heavy responsibility. But not with you.
Which leads me to wonder, when do you have time to grow your garden?
Bishop Frank Tunstall, Superintendent, Heartland Conference
