Testimonies of students during the Feast of Ingathering service

From Patrick Goins --  Since I’m an IPHC student, I receive the Founders Scholarship.  I want to thank the women who allow that to be possible.  If it wasn’t for the various Women's Ministries members who raise this money to send to the College, then I would have to figure out another way to get $2,500 dollars to pay for school.  I appreciate everything that the Women's Ministries do for me and this school, and I love them for that!

From Caitlin Poole –  I would like to take a minute to express my gratitude for the Founders Scholarship I have received.  I am financing my college degree by myself, and receiving this scholarship for the last three years has been a tremendous help in me being able to afford to come to Emmanuel.  It actually was one of the deciding factors for me choosing to attend here.  Back when I was a senior in high school I was very well acquainted with Emmanuel due to several summers at Falcon Youth Camp. I knew it was good school, but it was too far from my family and too expensive.  So I crossed Emmanuel off and I fully intended on going to a different college. Then when I found out I would be receiving the Founder's Scholarship if I enrolled at Emmanuel, it made me take another look. I saw that God was opening the door for me to be able to attend here and He was providing the way. I'm still far from home but I have come to love the people here as I do my own family. Thank you so much for this scholarship, I can honestly say I would not be here without it. Thank you for helping me have the experience of a lifetime that has changed me forever.

From Jessica Wooten –  Good Morning.  My name is Jessica Wooten, and I am a recipient of the Founder's Scholarship. This scholarship has really enabled me to attend Emmanuel College. I am a missionary kid, and though God has always provided for us, money has always been an issue for us.  When praying for God's direction as to where I was to go to school, I felt like God was pointing towards Emmanuel.  I applied and was accepted, and almost immediately money became an issue. We prayed an believed that if it was God's will for me to be at EC that He would provide the money. I see the Founder's Scholarship as an answer to prayer and a building block into shaping my future. So I would personally like to thank the Women's Ministries of the IPHC, from the bottom of my heart for giving into my life and enabling me to step into my destiny.

Dr. Michael Stewart honored the Wellon Brothers for their contributions to Emmanuel College

William "Bill" S. Wellons, Sr.

William "Bill" S. Wellons, Sr. was born in Micro, NC, "born again" in Falcon, NC; married Florence Lou Cooper, and has four sons who aptly followed the Wellons tradition of working successfully in the family business.  He was a well-known entrepreneur, philanthropist, humanitarian, and God-fearing gentleman.

His favorite charities were Northwood Temple Church, Northwood Academy and Emmanuel College.  He was one of the founders and a charter member of Northwood Temple Church in Fayetteville, NC.  He was a leader in the establishment of The Men's Ministries of the IPHC.

Mr. Wellons graduated from Micro High School in 1939 and entered Emmanuel College in the Fall of 1939.  In 1984, Bill and Florence Wellons established The William S. Wellons Scholarship Fund to encourage students from North Carolina to attend Emmanuel College.

Bill Wellons, Sr. passed away February 9, 1997 but his generosity lives on through scholarship funds set up for Emmanuel College and Northwood Academy.

Charles Russell Wellons

Charles Russell Wellons was born November 3, 1915 in Micro, North Carolina.  At age 17, he left Micro and headed to Washington, D.C. and started working for Safeway Grocery Store.  During his time at Safeway he bought a taxi cab and drove it at night while still working at Safeway during the day.  Eventually he bought a gas station, and then a restaurant which finally launched him into buying rental property in D.C.  During those years, he became involved with Emmanuel College and felt a burden to help raise money for the school.  In 1954 he started building a housing development in Durham, North Carolina, and it was at that time he used the biblical principal of the first fruits.  He gave the proceeds of the first two streets sold to Emmanuel College.  During the term of President W. G. Drum they traveled all over the United States raising money for Emmanuel College.

Up to his death in 1997 he raised money for Emmanuel and served on the Board of Trustees.  For many years he was Chair of the Building and Grounds Committee.

Each year during the Board meetings he could be seen days before going throughout the campus and inspecting all the buildings.  He loved Emmanuel, and one of his dreams was to see it grow to a four-year liberal arts college.

In 1952 he married Geneelia Marion Stewart and they had three children, Miriam, Stewart, and Charlene, all of whom attended Emmanuel.  He went to be with the Lord on April 24, 1997.  Before his death he started a Foundation which has been beneficial to helping students go to colleges and universities across the country.  He truly loved Emmanuel with all his heart and would be very pleased and proud to see the growth and achievement that has happened to the school.

John Howard Wellons

John Howard Wellons was born May 31, 1918 in Micro, NC. In 1945, John married Alma Ruffin of Bailey, NC a graduate of East Carolina Teachers college and lifetime educator.  They were members of the Gospel Tabernacle Church in Dunn, NC, where he served as a member of the church board and a Sunday school class teacher whose class was named in his honor. From 1943-1963, he was president and owner of Wellons Candy Company, a candy manufacturing company employing several hundred.  In 1950, he established the John H. Wellons Foundation as a public charity.  The foundation provides loans for deserving individuals seeking higher education and sponsor for elderly housing.

John was a developer and real estate investor. In 1959, John organized First Federal Bank of Dunn where he served as chairman of the board until his passing.  He was honored in 1968 as Man of the Year of Dunn.

He was a member of the founding board of Oral Roberts University, Tulsa, OK, where he served as Chairman of the Endowment Committee.  He was also selected to serve on the founding Board of Regents for Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va.  His service to humanity also included serving on the Presidential Board of Advisors at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC, member of the Falcon Children’s Home Board of the Pentecostal Holiness Church.

He was a Christian, philanthropist, visionary, humanitarian, positive thinker, faithful servant, dedicated husband and father.

CALVIN G. WELLONS

Entrepreneurs are often forced to choose between logging long hours building their fledgling businesses or spending time with their families.  Calvin Wellons, a visionary real estate developer and philanthropist who helped transform Morehead City, NC into a thriving community, was no ordinary entrepreneur.

Mr. Wellons, who died from cancer, last year, tallied an impressive list of professional accomplishments during his career.  In addition to the many properties he developed, including Morehead Plaza and Beaufort Town Apartments, Mr. Wellons also served on the Morehead City Council and as President of the Morehead City Rotary, sat on the Emanuel College Board of Trustees for 23 years, and with his wife, Jean, established the Wellons Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping men and women, who otherwise couldn’t afford college, further their education.

Mr. Wellons and his brothers were also responsible for securing the funds to erect Emmanuel College’s Wellons Science Resources Center.  Randy Martin, Morehead’s City Manager, also credits Mr. Wellons with helping to build Morehead City’s financial stability, while Mr. Wellons’ friend and business associate, Joe Beam, believes Mr. Wellons “was instrumental in expanding the city limits of Morehead City, taking them to the outlying areas,”

But Mr. Wellons’ legacy begins with his family.

Indeed, Mr. Wellons managed to do what most businessmen, caught up in the fast-paced business world, simply can’t:  He made time for everything.  Regardless of the long hours he devoted to his professional and philanthropic endeavors, Mr. Wellons always put the Lord first then his family.

In fact, if there was one thing Mr. Wellons’ four daughters could always count on it was the fact that their dad would be home for breakfast and dinner, without fail.

He gave tremendously to people who did not have the means, and no one ever knew that he gave.  He stood up for something, even if everyone thought he was wrong, he would withstand what was being said if he believed it was best for the business, church, or his home life.

Ephesians 3:20-21

20 God can do anything, you know — far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.

21 Glory to God in the church!

Glory to God in the Messiah, in Jesus!

Glory down all the generations!

Glory through all millennia! Oh, yes!
