Little Johnny asked his grandmother how old she was.
Grandmother answered, "39 and holding."
Johnny thought for a moment, and then said,
"And how old would you be if you let go?"
The Scripture reading for today is recorded in Luke 17:5:
The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith" (Luke 17:5, NIV ).
Editor's commentary on today's Scripture written in Luke 17:5
This request of our Lord's disciples comes on the heels of Jesus' teaching on sin and forgiveness. Jesus makes it clear that offenses and temptation to sin will come to all of us. Dealing with offenses and learning how to forgive is a major factor for all of us. One may wonder if they were not trying to change the subject because what Jesus was teaching was not an easy thing to do. However, in this particular case, I think they were searching for something they did not presently have in their arsenal of spiritual inventory, and they wanted far more than what they had. They were convinced that our Lord could provide it.
The other Sunday as I was sitting in a morning worship service, the Holy Spirit dropped this thought into my heart and mind, "A Growing Faith."
I am convinced that God wants us to have "a growing faith."
The disciples, I think, expressed it when they said, "Lord, increase our faith." They
didn't say, "We would like to know how to decrease our faith." No it is increase -- or a growing faith.
I think we experience that kind of growing faith as we use what faith
we already have. We must believe that God exists, and always has, and
will be around in all of the tomorrows we will ever have. We need to
allow God to take charge and rule and reign in our lives in this
present moment of time. When He is sitting on the throne of our hearts
and minds and in our lives, something good will happen.
We will experience a growing faith as we endeavor to allow Jesus to be Lord of our lives.
As this thought began to develop in my mind, I immediately thought of Isaac and how God has blessed him in Genesis 26. The Scripture tells us that there was a severe famine that overshadowed the earth, one that was different from the one in Abraham's lifetime.
Here was a test for Isaac to see what his faith mettle was made of. It is interesting that the writer of the Scripture passage tells us that God appeared to Isaac when he moved down to Gerar. It was a clear and concise message. "Don't go down to Egypt." When we are going through a test, we tend to want to move to some other place in order to escape. We want to recoil from the struggles and hard places in our lives. God is here showing Isaac that his miracle is right where he now is.
Listen to what God told him: "Do as I say and stay here in this land. If you do, I will be with you and bless you, and I will give all this land to you and to your descendants, just as I promised Abraham your father. 4 And I will cause your descendants to become as numerous as the stars! And I will give them all of these lands; and they shall be a blessing to all the nations of the earth. 5 I will do this because Abraham obeyed my commandments and laws" (Genesis 26:3-5 (The Living Bible). That year Isaac's crops were tremendous --100 times the grain he sowed. For Jehovah blessed him" (Genesis 26:12, The Living Bible).
God wants to bless you and meet your every need. The Apostle Paul wrote,
"But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19, KJV).
God wants our faith to grow with every experience we have. I believe that 2009 will be a year of growing faith for those who make Jesus Christ the Lord of their lives.
Think about it Meditate upon it!

Who was the director of the great General Conference Choir in Oklahoma City when he directed this great Gospel Song? What year was it?
I'll See You in the Rapture
If we never meet again,
On this earth my precious friend;
If to God we have been true,
And we lived above all sin;
Then for us there'll be a meeting,
A hallelujah greeting;
I'll see you in the rapture some sweet
Oh yes I'll see you in the rapture,
I'll see you in the rapture;
I'll see you at that meeting in the air:
There with our blessed Savior,
We'll live and reign forever;
I'll see you in the rapture some sweet day.
To my loved ones let me say,
That there'll surely come a day;
That the Lord will come again,
And he'll take his bride away;
So get ready now to meet him,
With hallelujahs greet him;
I'll see you in the rapture some sweet day.
Oh yes I'll see you in the rapture,
I'll see you in the rapture;
I'll see you at that meeting in the air:
There with our blessed Savior,
We'll live and reign forever;
I'll see you in the rapture some sweet day.
There with our blessed Savior,
We'll live and reign forever;
I'll see you in the rapture some sweet day!
[Editor's Note: Let me know who you think the director was of this great General Conference Choir. A hint . . . he was the first director of the Southwestern College Choir when Dr. R. O. Corvin was the president. His wife accompanied the choir at the grand piano. Do you remember what year that was when he directed the singing?]

Hugh's
News honors Dr. Frank G. Tunstall, Author of Our Awesome Lord, A
Captivating Portrait of What Jesus Achieved and How He Did It -- A must
buy for Christmas! -- a special offer from Creation House -- $14.95 plus shipping
Every
now and then a book is written and published that every Christian needs
to read. Whether you are a new, immature Christian or a mature
Christian, Dr. Frank Tunstall's book Our Awesome Lord is for you.
No doubt the most significant book ever written on Christology has been written by our own Frank G. Tunstall.
Dr. Tunstall has taken on a project of enormous proportions and has
made complex theological issues come alive in simple every day terms
that any reader can understand and find enriching and edifying to the
soul and spirit.
On
the cover sheet of the book it says, "Bishop and pastor Frank G.
Tunstall gives you a unique and thorough teaching showing why the term awesome describes the ministry of Jesus Christ and unveils what the Lord achieved and how He did it."
"These
profound Biblical truths, coupled with sound theological explanation,
will prepare you to walk before the heavenly Father with implicit
trust, just as Jesus did. In the process, you will discover and
experience the amazing presence and power of the Holy Spirit,
motivating you to partner with the Lord in His vision for the nations."
I
had the privilege to read the first draft of the book and make some
suggestions as I felt led of the Holy Spirit to make. I was both
honored and humbled by that gracious offer from a highly esteemed
colleague of mine. In fact, he mentioned my name, along with many
others, who did the same thing. You can find it on page vii, under
acknowledgments.
Creation House is running an introductory special for $14.95 plus shipping, for people who order directly from them at www.strangdirect.com
Bishop
Thompson, Superintendent of the North Carolina Conference, is taking
the book to each of his districts, and is encouraging his pastors to
buy it, read it for personal enrichment, and then preach on the person
and work of Jesus Christ this fall, October – December, and use Our Awesome Lord as the basis of their preaching.
He
is also encouraging them to use the support materials in Sunday School
classes, for example, or for Wednesday night Bible studies. The support
materials include a Student’s Study Guide, Teacher’s Lesson Plans, and
300 PowerPoint slides. The support materials are formulated into
26-lessons designed to be studied over 26 weeks. The support materials
are free and can be downloaded at www.ourawesomelord.com.
Drawing
on the Word of God and His many years of experience as a pastor and
researcher, Dr.Tunstall explains how the attitude of Jesus Christ and
His servant relationship to His heavenly Father enabled the Lord to
accomplish all of His goals.
You will learn more about topics as:
- Jesus' identity as the Son of God and the Son of man, which qualified Hm to become the Savior of the world.
- His attitude of implicit trust in His heavenly Father, which enabled Jesus to triumph over all His foes.
- His diagnosis
of the core human problem and the cure He provided amid great
opposition and suffering, including His own death and resurrection.
- His intercession,
which enabled His followers to receive the Holy Spirit, adopt Jesus'
attitude, and launch His international vision to save the world.
You
will come away sharpened and filled with new admiration of your awesome
Lord. Your daily walk with Jesus will blossom in fresh intimacy, which
will motivate you to choose to adopt Jesus' attitude and become a 21st
Century partner in His worldwide strategy!
A Study Guide is available at: www.OurAwesomeLord.com
[Editor's Note: In an e-mail from Bishop Tunstall on Tuesday evening, October 28, he wrote the following:
Bishop Ronald Q. Moore, Superintendent of the Upper South Carolina Conference, has just ordered 100 copies to give to his pastors!
We’re working now to raise $18,000 to get the book in Spanish. Right now I have $10,000. Would you pray with me, Hugh, that the Lord will supply the remaining funds so we can get the book to our Hispanic brothers and sisters too, here at home and around the world?
I was in Indonesia in August teaching in one of our Bible schools. The students there did not have a single textbook.We’re placing 2,000 copies of Our Awesome Lord in the hands of students in English speaking Bible schools. We also hope to place the book in the hands of Spanish speaking Bible school students.
