A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses.
She started her class by saying, "Everyone who thinks he is stupid, stand up!"
After a few seconds, Little Davie stood up. The teacher said, "Do you think you're stupid, Little Davie?"
"No, ma'am, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself."
The Scripture text for today is recorded in Psalm 84:11, 12
Ps 84:11-12
11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield;
The LORD will give grace and glory;
No good thing will He withhold
From those who walk uprightly.
12 O LORD of hosts,
Blessed is the man who trusts in You!

Editor's commentary on today's Scripture text that is written in Psalm 84:11, 12
This Scripture text was my Dad's favorite. He often quoted it during his lifetime. He lived to be 94. I was present when he breathed his last breath.
Today, as I endeavor to pay a fitting tribute to the new beginning at Holmes Bible College and somehow capture for you my readers the significance of the glorious day when we dedicated the first new building on the new campus adjoining Furman University, I want to remember my Dad who was a student when N. J. Holmes was the president of the college.
Our Scripture today reminds us that God provides both light (guidance) and protection (shield) in our faith walk with Him. For you see, we live by faith and not by sight. In the process of our pilgrimage from earth to glory, God showers us with His grace (God's riches at Christ's expense) and glory (His abiding presence) through it all.
It is indeed comforting to know that God intends nothing but good for all of us. We know that God is a Good God. The Psalmist reminds us that "no good thing will God withhold from us" provided we walk uprightly before Him. God can turn evil things that sometimes happen in our lives for our good. The Apostle Paul wrote, "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28, KJV).
Does that mean we have to be perfect to receive these blessings? Absolutely not! It does mean that we will keep short accounts with Almighty God by confessing our sins immediately whenever we miss the mark. The Apostle John wrote, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9, KJV).
What a benediction the twelfth verse is: "O Lord of hosts, Blessed is the man who trusts in you!" That verse includes every woman, too. Those who walk by faith must have patience for the promises of God to be fulfilled. Waiting is not always easy, but God's word says, "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint" (Isaiah 40:31, KJV).
Your miracle is on the way. God is never ahead of schedule and He is never late. You can trust God to bring it to pass in your life.

The editor's description of the dedication ceremony
It was a perfect fall day in Greenville, SC, on Thursday, October 2, when upward to some 200 people gathered for the dedication of the first new building on the new campus of Holmes Bible College. The sun was brightly shining and only a few white clouds floated lazily on the background of an awesome blue sky. There was a slight easterly wind that took the bite out of a humid day. There is nothing like a cool breeze on such a wonderful day in Greenville. It was as though God, Himself, had ordered the weather, and we know He does just that for His people.
Alumni and friends were there from coast to coast, from north to south, and from sea to shining sea. A few Canadians made the day even more special.
The prayers and Scripture reading were well-planned and delivered with great meaning. Dr. Michael Stewart, President of Emmanuel College, read Psalm 145. What an appropriate Scripture to read for such a regal occasion, and he read it well. My interpretive speech professor at Furman University, Dr. Sarah Lowery, would have been proud of him. I know I was.
Following the prayer of invocation by the Rev. Mr. Richard Porterfield, Dr. G. Earl Betty, the new President, greeted and welcomed everyone, and set the stage for a glorious and historic event. He really looked Presidential and spoke with the authority and dignity characteristic of a president like Dr. Paul F. Beacham. We knew immediately we were in good hands with his leadership. Like a dove descending upon all who had gathered for this most significant occasion, there was an abiding peace that enveloped the campus. It was as though God had placed His hand and signature of approval on all that was happening in this new beginning of Holmes Bible College.
Dr. Beatty called on Bishop James D. Leggett, General Superintendent of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church to bring greetings to those in attendance. He was able to speak out of the wealth of his own personal experience as a student at Holmes both in the high school and college, and later to teach there, as well as serve on the Board of Trustees. He is always an excellent speaker, and has a word that is timely for any occasion. His presence as the Presiding Bishop of our denomination gave added special meaning to significance of the ceremony, and equally underscored the unique and continuing relationship the Pentecostal Holiness Church has maintained through the years since the founding of the college by N. J. Holmes and that continued in the long tenure of Dr. Paul F. Beacham for fifty-nine years.
Melvine and I had front row seats in the chairs that had been placed on the parking lot in front of the new building. Bishop James D. Leggett and his wife, Faye, sat next to us or we sat next to them as we observed and participated in the responsive readings for the dedication. On my right, was the Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gentry, former Senior Pastor, Greenville First P. H. Church in Greenville, NC. We were classmates at Holmes. I may have taught him in a speech class I taught when I was attending Furman University.
I was pleased to see members of the quartet I was privileged to sing with when I was a student at Holmes my first year. Those in our quartet have blessed the Pentecostal Holiness Church and are known for their ministry and service in our denomination. They are Roland Harrell, Eddie Wood, Willard Wagner, and Hugh Morgan. I am grateful to God for their continued friendship and ministry over these 51 years.
Dr. G. Earl Beatty sent me the followning report that I thought you would be interested in knowing:
There were a few more people in attendance at the Feast
of Ingathering Service that night of the dedication. In gifts and pledges the college was
given about $40,000 at last count. More is still coming, I understand.
Colonel Jack Kelley is giving alumni and friends the opportunity of
sponsoring a room in the new Multi-PurposeTraining Center. Those
interested may contact him through the college, P. O. Box 14188, Greenville, SC 29610-4188, or at his e-mail address: JackTKelley@aol.com.
Thanks again for your support and continuing good news you bring from
Holmes Bible College through Hugh's News.

You'll be glad you gave. Planting seed in difficult economic times is the best time to give. Isaac got a hundredfold return when he planted his seed in a time of famine in the land. The Scripture says, "Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the LORD blessed him" (Genesis 26:12, NIV ). Your miracle is where you are. Seed-faith giving is a Biblical principle and you can't improve on God's economy.
It is God's blessings that we want. That includes health, food, shelter, clothing, and cheaper gasoline. Most of all, we want to lay up treasurs in heaven. Investing in the youth of our country and church is reaching into future generations that will transform many lives. Jesus said, "Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again" (Luke 6:38, KJV). Brief
of Early History of
Holmes Bible College as read by Mrs. Bobbi Bishop
Holmes Bible College, the oldest continuing to operate Pentecostal
Bible College in the world, was founded in 1898 by Rev. N.J. Holmes, a
Presbyterian minister and his wife, Lucy Simpson Holmes at the Altamont
Hotel on Paris Mountain in Greenville, South Carolina.
Rev. and Mrs.
Holmes’ goal was to establish an institute of higher learning that
would train and equip young men and women of any denomination for
Christian life, ministry and service to help fulfill the great
commission of Jesus Christ.
After several location changes during its early years, from Greenville
to Atlanta, Georgia, to Columbia, South Carolina, the school relocated back to its
original home in Greenville in 1905. The college remained at the top of
Paris Mountain for ten years. The Board of Trustees thought it would
benefit the college if it were located in the city so in 1915, it was
moved to the corner of Buncombe Street and Briggs Avenue (now Paul
Beacham Way).
In 1998, with the impending construction of the Western
Connector, the College purchased new land that borders Furman
University.
The school has experienced several name changes throughout its history
as well. Initially named the Altamont Bible and Missionary Institute,
it was renamed the Holmes Bible and Missionary Institute near the end
of Rev. Holmes’ life. Further name changes included the Bible and
Missionary Institute of Atlanta, Holmes Bible College of Theology and
Missions, Holmes Theological Seminary, Holmes College of the Bible and
on February 2, 1998, the Board of Trustees voted to change the title to
Holmes Bible College.
The College is 110 years old, but has seen little administrative
turnover. Rev. N.J. Holmes, the founder of the college, served as
president until his death in 1919. His successor, Paul F. Beacham, had
a tenure that spanned fifty-nine years until his death in 1978. Dr.
Kenneth Benson who continued until his retirement in 1996 succeeded Dr.
Beacham. Dr. Richard Waters succeeded Dr. Benson in 1996 and was
formally inaugurated as President of Holmes Bible College on May 18,
1997.
Dr. Richard Waters served the college with honor and distintion for eleven years though some of the most difficult times in the school's history. He is to be commended and honored for his courageous and faithful service to the college. In May of 2008, he submitted his resignation to the Board of Trustees.
God in His providence for continued and uninterrupted leadership for the college, had prepared Dr. G. Earl Beatty for such a time as this. He was willing to come out of retirement to become the interim president of Holmes Bible College. And we, God's people, alumni and friends of the college, commend the Board of Trustees for the selection of this good man who is well qualified to lead the college in this time of transition.
[Editor's note: I am indebted to Mrs. Bobbi Bishop, Vice President for
Administrative Affairs for this history.]
Mr. Jack Shaw delivered a extemporaneous speech that came from his heart
The reality of the economic stress our nation and the world is experiencing remains ever before us.
The headlines of our newspapers and the television news programs as well as the talk shows
continuously present their message of doom and gloom.
As we gather here today on the new campus of Holmes Bible College to dedicate this the first building, we do so on a campus valued at several million dollars in addition to this building and the infrastructure in place to accommodate additional construction. All of this has come to pass with a total debt of less than one million dollars ($1,000,000). You may ask how? It has been accomplished by the sacrificial gifts of many who will not allow the purpose and mission of Holmes to die. The desire of the administration and Trustees is for Holmes to be debt free and that will happen.
The message of encouragement that I want to convey unto you today is that God's economy is not
in trouble. His storehouse has not been diminished nor have His resources been exhausted.
Neither will His promises fail. His Word is forever sure. Our God Who revealed Himself as "I Am" is the God who has said "I will." Nothing ... no conditions or circumstances will alter His Word or limit his promises. He is Jehovah Jirah!

Jack Shaw has written a new book entitled, Little by Little, with a foreword by Ravi Zacharias
Jack mailed Melvine and me a copy of his book with a special note of love and affection on the fly leaf with his signature, Jack. We were students at Emmanuel College 1952-53. I was there only one year, Jack's senior year. Jack is a singer and sang in one of the male quartets. He had a dry cleaning business on campus, and we got our suits and shirts done by his service to the students.
I have read every word that was written by others about the book,
including the dedication of the book to Jack's dear father, William Erby
Shaw, and his father-in-law, Waldo Norman Leslie. Although I never
knew either man intimately, I did observe them at a distance while I attended Holmes Memorial Church for three years and
greatly admired them as men of faith, Christians who loved Jesus and
endeavored to make Him known in the market place where they did
business. They are giants and examples of Christian leadership. Jack is
blessed to have Ravi Zacharias write the foreword. What a wonderful
tribute.
I have read the first six chapters. I did not scan through the book as I normally do to see what
else I might find, but the next morning after I started reading it, I saw the photos of Jack and Jane Shaw's family and I deeply
appreciated seeing his three children and grandchildren, and family members.
I like Little by Little because the way Jack weaves into it the message of the
Gospel while sharing his own personal experiences that always point people to Jesus. He carries his theme of helping his readers know the difference between a fruitless journey of life and discovering the journey For Life based on Biblical principles is worth the price of the book and more. His writing style is not confrontational or preachy, but articulate and
heartwarming in sharing the Gospel of Jesus in a fresh and disarming
style that encourages his readers to want to read more. His story
about learning to fly and the first time he took Jane up in his
airplane that was almost a disaster because of a oil cap that had not
been securely tightened by the mechanic who checked the oil. What a
lesson to learn. Taking person responsibility for the pre-flight check
list by paying attention to details and ensuring for yourself that all
is OK to go. I like the old adage, you get what you inspect, not what
you expect.
Jack's inspiration for the title of the book, Little by Little, came many years before as he was reading Exodus 23:30, "Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land. In the dedication page of the book he closes by stating, "But most of all I dedicate it to God, my heavenly Father, Who has guided me 'little by little' on the journey For life.
Little by Little is being offered on the internet by Amazon, Barnes and
Noble, Christianbooks.com, Lifeway and B&H Publishing Group.
Incidentally, the retail price will be $19.99. Jack made a point of clarification about the proceeds of the sale of his book. He wrote, "Not all of my
proceeds will go to Holmes and Emmanuel, but a significant portion (all
will go to education and scholarships)." In addition Jack is
pleased to report that some proceeds from the sold pre-release copies
have already been delivered to Dr. Beatty and Dr. Stewart, repectively.
Jack Shaw is the chairman and CEO of Shaw Resources real estate and property management corporation in Greenville, South Carolina. He and his wife, Jane, are active members of Taylors First Baptist Church in nearby Taylors, South Carolina, and have three grown children, as well as seven absolutely beautiful grand children.
Jack oversaw the construction of the new building at Holmes Bible College, and it is first class, even copacetic! You will be proud of it.
Will you receive the Benediction?
Numbers 6:23-27
23 Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them,
24 The Lord bless thee, and keep thee:
25 The Lord make His face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:26 The Lord lift up His countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
27 And they shall put My Name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them (KJV).
