It is amazing to me how our chaplains on active duty continue their adult education while serving our country.
Chaplain, Captain Jamie Braswell, United States Air Force, is one of those chaplains who continues to grow in the academic and clinical fields of ministry.
In May 2011, Jamie Braswell received his earned D. Min. (Doctor of Ministry) degree from Columbia International University in Columbia, SC. Unfortunately, he was not able to be there in person since he and his family had moved to Kileen, TX, where he had begun a year of residency in the Army Family Life Course at Fort Hood, TX. He had to hit the ground running to complete this course in a year.
His doctoral dissertation was an evaluation of safeTALK, an acronym which stands for suicide alertness for everyone Tell Ask Listen Keepsafe. TALK represents the steps one should take with someone considering suicide.
In the military, chaplains often deal with service members in crisis and this dissertation should help inform the leaders of the Air Force Chaplaincy about ways to intervene with airmen considering suicide.
A little over three years ago Chaplain Braswell sought the Lord about continuing his education and He opened the door for him to begin working on his doctorate. By Lord's grace and with the support of his family, friends, and the Chaplains Ministries Board, He was able to complete it. Jamie wrote, "I was under a tight deadline to finish by May of 2011 because I had been selected to attend the Army Family Life Chaplain Training Course at Fort Hood, TX. I was awarded my Doctor of Ministry in May, but I was unable to attend graduation because I had already begun the Army Family Life Chaplain course."
In August of 2012, He will receive a Master of Science degree in Counseling Psychology. He is a graduate of Holmes Bible College and the School of Divinity, Regent University where he earned the M. Div. degree. Once Jamie Braswell retires from the Air Force it is his hope to work in an IPHC school or church.
[Editor's comment: We are very proud of Jamie and his many accomplishments. He has been selected for promotion to the rank of Major and will no doubt receive that promotion in 2012. He is blessed to have a loving and supporting wife, the former Miss Sandra Starling of Virginia. They have two teenage children who are dedicated Christians, Preston and Abbie. Preston is an avid golfer and one day he may win the Masters PGA Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. That remains to be seen. The ballots are still out on that one; however, he has my vote of confidence.]
