A Fireside Chat with Bishop James D. Leggett, President, Holmes Bible College

Imagine Bishop James D. Leggett, the new President, Holmes Bible College, sitting by your fireplace chating with you face to face. Here's what he would like to tell you about what is happening at Holmes Bible College:

Founder's Memorial Week: Founders Memorial Week will be March 22-23.  Guest speakers are Bishop Jim Whitfield, the Rev. Mr.  Doug Small and the Rev. Mr. Derrick Gardner.

Remember in Prayer: I visited the Rev. Mr. Wesley Dixon in Mary Black Hospital in Spartanburg Monday afternoon.  I had a call from his son Mike Sunday morning that he had suffered a stroke on Friday.  The doctors have told the family that he should make a full recovery in four to five weeks.  Wesley is still in ICU.  He was supposed to be moved to a regular room, but the doctors decided that he needed to stay in ICU at least another day.

Mrs. Geneelia Wellons is at home and doing well after surgery for lung cancer. I talked with her Monday and she is very thankful for the Lord's blessings.  She said that the doctor reports no sign of cancer.

Meetings in Upper South Carolina: Bishop Ronald Moore and The Rev. Ernest Barr, Missions Director, invited me to attend the Missions Meals and represent Holmes. It was a pleasure to travel with these men to the four meals across the conference.  The fellowship was great.  The ministers and the laymen were so gracious and so encouraging.  It was a great time for reconnecting for the college and the conference.  So many of the pastors and missionaries are graduates of Holmes. The excitement was so encouraging.

At each meeting Brother Barr asked someone to lead the group in prayer. I will not forget those prayers.  It was not just a perfunctory prayer, but a time of real intercession and declaration of faith for the future of Holmes.

Reception for Alumni: Brother Wesley Dixon and Bishop Ronald Moore have been in discussion concerning hosting a dinner at the conference campgrounds for the alumni and friends of Holmes.  I am deeply appreciative of the invitation to attend the Missions Meals and for the plans for the alumni dinner. There are so many former Holmes students and faculty living in the conference area and it would be a wonderful thing to have all of them together for a time of fellowship and casting the vision for Holmes.

Brooks-King Mission House: The Brooks-King Mission house is framed.  The plumbing and the heating and air has been roughed in. The boxing is completed.  Bob Russo's crew will start the brickwork this week. It really looks good. The faculty and students are having a great time watching the construction.  It is so gratifying to see Holmes Alumni working so hard and working together to rebuild the campus.  Carl Sturkie is overseeing the project.  His son has been working with him.  Bob Russo is overseeing the brickwork. John Gibson and Larry Ward came from North Carolina to do the framing.  Herman Litchfield is doing the heating and air. Sherrill Greene came from Clinton with Steve Cooper to work with Carl.

[Editor's Note: It is so refreshing to hear from Bishop James D. Leggett concerning the progress at Holmes Bible College. As an alumnus of this great institution and a member of the Board of Trustees, I want to see the school not only come through this transitional season in victory, but rise to great heights of recruitment of new students--young and old alike, as well as veterans returning from war whom God has called to Christian ministry and service, and alumni and friends rallying around the school with prayer and financial support.

We believe God has His mighty hand upon Holmes Bible College and He is writing a new chapter in this great institution.

The campus is located adjacent to Furman University one of the most beautiful campuses in the South. Holmes Bible College will complement Furman not only in striking beauty, but in excellence in education, character development, and grounding students in the Word of God. The future is bright for Holmes. God has sent us the right man to lead the college in these crucial days. I stand to salute Bishop James D. Leggett, our President.]
