While there, he bid on a parrot. He really wanted this bird, so he got caught up in the bidding. He kept on bidding, but kept getting outbid, so he bid higher and higher and higher.

Finally, after he bid way more than he intended, he won the bid-- the parrot was his at last.

As he was paying for the parrot, he said to the Auctioneer, "I sure hope this parrot can talk. I would hate to have paid this much for it, only to find out that he can't talk." "Don't worry," said the Auctioneer, "He can talk.
Rev. List faithfully served IPHC World Missions in Africa, and the fruit of his ministry continues.

He is survived by his wife, Gailya, two daughters and two sons. His daughter, Sharon, and her husband, Ron Wooten, serve as Regional Directors for WMM in East Africa.

Funeral details will be posted when that information is available.

[Editor's comment: Philip List and I were classmate at Holmes Bible College, and both of us commuted to Furman University as students. I have known Gailya Williams List since 1952 when we were students at Emmanuel College. Later I attended the National Pentecostal Holiness Church in Washington, DC, when I was a young Marine at Quantico, VA. Later, Gailya and I both attended Holmes Bible College. That is where Gailya met Philip, or Philip met Gailya.

Philip and Gailya are first class Christians and truly Pentecostal. I know that Philip was a man of prayer, full of faith and the Holy Spirit. His parents were missionaries before him, and I had the privilege to meet them when we were at Holmes Bible College.

May the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, bring peace and comfort to this outstanding IPHC family.]
We do not lose heart (2 Cor. 4:16) because we call out to the God who hears and answers prayer (Ps. 50:15; Ps. 10:17). We come against infirmity in Bishop Carpenter, declaring, "by His stripes we are healed," (Is. 53:5). Take away all sickness and pain (Deut. 7:15). We ask and believe for a miracle, even now (Matt. 8:13). Let healing and wholeness speedily go forth (Is. 58:8). We join together in faith, praying that Bishop Carpenter will have great results (James 5). We decree he will have abundant life (Ps. 118:17). We ask that You make him bold with new strength (Ps. 138:3). Let the Word of healing prosper over him (Is. 55:11). We exalt the Will of God over every decision, suggestion, and method of operation concerning him. We call into alignment every physical function of his body. We decree that every cell line up with the Word of God. We know that You go before Your children and carry them through (Deut. 1:30-31). Let Your confidence be reinforced in his life (Prov. 3:25-26). Blessed are those who put their trust in You (Ps. 2:12). Let sorrow and sadness be far from this family (Is. 54:14). Guide them continually. Cause them to recognize Your leading (Ps. 143:8-12). Give peace greater than their understanding (Phil. 4:11). We ask that your wisdom, knowledge, and understanding be activated for them. Let them feel Your presence morning and night (Ps. 92:2). We commit this prayer to You (Ps. 37:5). We bless this family and release our faith for them, trusting that You will do an awesome work (Ps. 66:3). Cause them to be blessed above all people (Deut. 7:14). We give You glory and honor for Your goodness. We judge You faithful, knowing You are not slack concerning Your promises (1 John 5:14-15). Agreeing together, we ask in the Mighty Name of Jesus! Amen.

Thanks for agreeing,

Beth Bailey

[Editor's Comment: Bishop Ray Boggs, superintendent of the Upper South Carolina Conference, asked David Richardson, Jr., director of Discipleship Ministries, to send this prayer to me. Beth Bailey is the wife of The Rev. Dr. Terry Bailey, senior pastor of the Greenwood Pentecostal Holiness Church in Greenwood, SC.

I felt the anointing of the Holy Spirit is this prayer that Beth Bailey has written. I sense that it came from her heart, and therefore, as others read it, as I did, it will touch the hearts of all who will agree with Beth in praying this prayer for Bishop Ronald W. Carpenter, Sr.

This Sunday, May 27, is Pentecost Sunday. On that Sunday, 2,000 years ago, the 120 disciples were all filled with the Holy Spirit. That promised gift from the Father and Son revolutionized their lives and helped them to see people and opportunities in a different light.

Following that significant day when those disciples received the baptism with the Holy Spirit, here is what happened. Let us look in on the Book of Acts 3:1-11 (a written record of the history of the early church):

One day at three o'clock in the afternoon, Peter and John were on their way into the Temple for prayer meeting. At the same time there was a man crippled from birth being carried up. Every day he was set down at the Temple gate, the one named Beautiful, to beg from those going into the Temple. When he saw Peter and John about to enter the Temple, he asked for a handout. Peter, with John at his side, looked him straight in the eye and said, "Look here." He looked up, expecting to get something from them.

Peter said, "I don't have a nickel to my name, but what I do have, I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk!" He grabbed him by the right hand and pulled him up. In an instant his feet and ankles became firm. He jumped to his feet and walked.

The man went into the Temple with them, walking back and forth, dancing and praising God. Everybody there saw him walking around and praising God. They recognized him as the one who sat begging at the Temple's Gate Beautiful and rubbed their eyes, astonished, scarcely believing what they were seeing.

The man threw his arms around Peter and John, ecstatic. All the people ran up to where they were at Solomon's Porch to see it for themselves.

Do you believe that this story is true? Do you believe this was a miracle of healing?

Do you believe this story can be reenacted today?

I go on record in declaring that our God is able and willing to heal Bishop Ronald W. Carpenter, Sr., and remove every cancer cell in his body so that there will be no need of any chemotherapy, or further treatment.

The Great Physician is in our House--the International Pentecostal Holiness Church. He is present to touch and heal our presiding bishop. Let us pray for our resident bishops in Oklahoma City, and the Council of Bishops as they seek the Lord on behalf of our beloved brother and spiritual leader.

May God use the prayer of Beth Bailey to move the heart of God for complete and full healing.

Dear Hugh,

Here are just a few memories about our mutual friend Damon Burrows:

In 1986, Damon brought some youth from SCCM (Southwestern College Christian Ministries) for recruitment of students who were just leaving our high schools here in Kansas. I had known Damon as a fellow attender of 1st PHC here in Wichita in my very young days. His parents lived in Wichita for a few years while D was attending West Hi School.

Damon and I hit it off this summer at Youth/Family Camp. He started talking to me about attending SCCM and getting my degree for Pastoral Ministries. I was 29 and was much older than all the hi schoolers he was reaching out to at the camp. I told him I would think about it and before I knew it Sally and I left Wichita, also a thriving towing business, and went to OKC to attend SCCM.

Damon kept his interest on my family and he helped us to become the Maintenance Director for the school in 1986. Damon saw more in us than we saw in ourselves. He had a vision that he shared with me one day at a restaurant and as he gave this vision I began catching the vision. Damon had a intuitive idea that everyone is a potential Christian, and that every student at SCCM was a servant for Jesus Christ and were full of ability to witness to whomever they would come into contact with. Damon gave each of his students a book that you would fill out daily as you met someone, you would hear their need and then strive to fulfill that need in their lives. No matter whether the person just need a friend or prayer or physical need or a financial need. We wrote these items down. He expected each of his students to fill a book full during the semester. It took 1,000 names. This meant you were out in the public and speaking to people. This was the most important lesson I learned while under Damon's tutelage. I learned to hear people as they spoke. It was something I would be able to expand upon over the last many years as a pastor and now an evangelist. God has blessed me to reach out to many people that if I hadn't listened, I would not know or understand what I was to be a part of in this ministry God has given to me.

Damon also taught the "Action In The Avenue" program and "Area Analysis," and I went with him and 4 other students to Topeka, Kansas, and we worked the full 3 days during the week and then on Saturday finding what the town was all about. I have since used these programs many times and have seen great success for souls and also the ability to develop information about an area and help pastors and churches see how to grow. What a method of action for churches that are dying.

God used Damon in so many ways, this letter could be expanded to many more pages. D, as he was affectionately called by many of those around him was not only a friend but a buddy. God used D in many ways that can't even be known till we arrive in Heaven and see his great reward for all he did. D had a way of saying things without being condescending to whom he was talking. What a Man Of God D is.

I pray many more years for Damon; but, I also ask God to minister to him in these last days. His precious wife, Marilyn, is such a precious soul and Sally and I love her also, she is a trooper. May God bless her also!

Last Friday was the first time she had missed teaching school since last November--another miracle.

With the new blood in her body, her color brightened and she looked so much better. However, her body dictated that she had to rest and sleep. It took the weekend for her to fully recover from the chemotherapy she had received on Thursday, and the new blood into her veins. When Sunday came, she drove herself to her church for worship.

Stephanie is finding out from her experience that it is the side effects of this chemotherapy that causes her body to ache, to be weak, to lack energy and stamina.

Yesterday, Tuesday, May 22, 2012, was her last day of the year teaching her precious children in kindergarten. The children expressed their love for one another, shared what they planned to do for the summer months. They hugged Stephanie over and over again. Parents and in some cases, grandparents, came to say goodbye to Stephanie and bring her gifts. It was a day of celebration for Stephanie as she thanked God for giving her one more year to teach at Statham Elementary School.

Stephanie has three more days to work. This Friday will be her last day. These days are called Teacher Planning where they complete all the paperwork and wrapped things up for the year, as well as have final conferences.

We are praying that God will completely remove all cancer cells in her body. We want that documented, and we pray that her oncologist will come to realize that he can take her off the chemotherapy.

The Scripture verse we cling to and believe for Stephanie is recorded 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24:

"May God himself, the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put you together—spirit, soul, and body—and keep you fit for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ. The One who called you is completely dependable. If He said it, He'll do it!
(from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.)

We believe that Stephanie's healing will bring glory to God and demonstrate the healing power of the Lord Jesus Christ in her body. We know she will declare the works of God, and give praise to Jesus Christ, her (and our) Healer. He is the Great Physician.

Please continue to pray for Stephanie, as well as our family, Melvine, Greg, and me, Hugh.]

Bishop Ray Boggs is the superintendent of the Upper South Carolina Conference, the home conference of our Presiding Bishop Ronald W. Carpenter, Sr.

On Tuesday, May 22, 2012, Bishop Boggs released to his Conference Executive Council, and to the ministers, pastors and people of his conference an urgent prayer alert to pray for Bishop Carpenter's healing.

I want you, as one of my readers of more than 5,000 readers, to be given the opportunity to join with our brothers and sisters in the Upper South Carolina Conference in a concert of prayer and fasting for the complete healing for our beloved Bishop Ronald W. Carpenter, Sr.

To All Ministers and Members of the Upper South Carolina Conference Family:

As many of you know by now, our Presiding Bishop, Dr. Ronald W. Carpenter, Sr., has recently tenured his resignation effective July 19, 2012. He has stated that his decision is primarily based upon his not being able to carry out his duties due to the side effects from his cancer treatments.

I, as the Bishop of the Upper South Carolina Conference, am declaring and decreeing a "Day of Prayer and Fasting" for the complete healing and total recovery of this disease! The day that the Lord laid upon my heart is Friday, June 1, 2012.

Please join me in this full day of fasting from 12:00 a. m. - 12:00 a. m. If you are not able to fast for the entire length of time, please ask the Lord to guide you in doing your part.

Bishop Carpenter has served this Conference since 1966 and was our Conference Superintendent for 11 years from 1986-1997. Nothing is impossible with God!

Let's rise up and declare to our enemy, "Enough is Enough!" Let us pray in faith and in agreement that Bishop Carpenter is healed completely in the name of Jesus Christ!

[Editor's Comment: Sunday, May 27, is Pentecost Sunday. It was following the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the 120 disciples in the Upper Room in Jerusalem that Peter and John spoke healing to a lame man and he was healed immediately.

This new Pentecostal power which Peter and John experienced enabled them to minister effectively to this lame man.

Here is what Bishop Stewart told me and later sent what his said in an e-mail. It reveals the tremendous gift of communication that Leon has been given by God, and one that he has systematically developed over the many years of his continuous and fruitful ministry.

"Damon was one of the best personal witnesses for Christ that I've ever known. He was comfortable with people of all levels: such as famous entertainers, State governors, U. S. He was 63. Hugh's News covered the story.

Jeffrey entered full-time ministry in 1988, with his wife, Kaye. Jeffrey’s communication skills quickly gained the attention of the public, and he launched Frontier Research Publications, a publishing arm that allowed him independence in distributing his message. He also worked with several mainstream publishers, including WaterBrook, HarperCollins, Zondervan, Word, and Tyndale House.

A thorough researcher, Jeffrey would go on to write 27 books, which have sold seven million copies, and have been printed in 24 languages.

Beginning in 2007, he hosted “Bible Prophecy Revealed,” a 30-minute weekly program that aired on TBN.

Popular as a conference speaker, as well, Jeffrey was held in great esteem by colleagues.

Today, Hal Lindsey, regarded as the catalyst for the modern-day interest in Bible prophecy, issued this statement:

“Last Friday night, my friend and colleague, Grant Jeffrey, ‘slipped the surly bonds of earth’ and went to be with his Lord. In this space last week, I asked you to join me in prayer for Grant’s complete healing and recovery from a massive heart attack. But sometimes our earthly concept of healing and recovery may not be what God has in mind. By the next morning, Grant was experiencing the greatest healing of all–he was with his blessed Savior. Grant had suffered pain for many years, but now he’ll suffer no more.

“Please continue to pray for his precious wife Kaye as she navigates through this difficult and immensely lonely time.

“We’ll miss you, Grant.”

William T. “Terry” James, prolific author, conference speaker, and co-founder of the website, RaptureReady, fondly recalled the talented Jeffrey:

“Grant and I knew each other well, and were able to meet on occasions of prophecy conferences, or at book-seller conventions.

“Grant was one of the sharpest minds in eschatology, and was often accused of having a photographic memory, which I suspect was probably true, based upon his amazing recall of facts and figures while speaking to overflow audiences. Always, he was fascinating to hear and to talk with personally.

“He was prolific in every sense, from research, to writing books and other materials – from broadcasts in TV and radio, to lectures on stage at the hundreds of prophecy forums at which he spoke. He was a powerful force for the Pre-Trib view of Bible prophecy and the spread of the Gospel of Jesus Christ everywhere he went.”

Bob Ulrich, of Prophecy in the News, remembered the impact of Jeffrey’s innovative ideas on disseminating the prophecy message:

“If Hal Lindsey’s ‘Late Great Planet Earth’ defined the prophetic landscape for the 80s and this generation, Grant Jeffrey took things to a whole new level. Heralding the pre-millennial revival, Grant perfected the art of the prophecy book in a way no one ever did before. Spectacular new discoveries; cutting edge research; timely subjects that were on the minds of the public–there was no end to the excitement he created.

“When Grant said that Jesus was coming soon, we believed him! He was the voice of authority in the world of Bible prophecy. Grant affected millions of lives with his books and television ministry in a way no one has before and perhaps no one will ever again. Scholar, tireless researcher; mentor; friend–a trusted voice we came to depend on.”

Jeffrey is survived by his wife, his mother, Florence, brothers David, Glenn, and Dale, and sister, Jill.

A service celebrating Grant Jeffrey’s life and ministry was held at Queensway Cathedral, in Toronto, on Friday, May 18.

[Editor's Comment: First of all, I want to thank Hugh Hoyle for sending this news story. Hugh and Lois are great communicators and often feed me the news I might otherwise miss.

I really like what Hal Lindsey wrote: ". . . sometimes our earthly concept of healing and recovery may not be what God has in mind." This explanation helps us to understand the sovereignty of God, and reminds us that God is indeed control, and has the last word.

Here is what the Apostle Peter has to say about the final or last word that Jesus has:

1 Peter 3:22
"Jesus has the last word on everything and everyone, from angels to armies. He's standing right alongside God, and what he says goes."

This coming Sunday is vitally important to us as Pentecostals. It is Pentecost Sunday when the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the 120 disciples in the Upper Room in Jerusalem. We consider this day, the birth of the New Testament Church.

Chuck Pierce says, "Pentecost is a time to celebrate the abundance of the Lord’s provision! Pentecost is a time for the release of revelation! Pentecost is a time to position ourselves for multiplication and increase!"

And Now for Memorial Day 2012 this coming Sunday, May 27:

"The Fallen Comrade Ceremony" can be reenacted in your local church.

A table of Remembrance for Memorial Day 2012

May I suggest that Sunday, May 27, the day before Memorial Day which is Monday, May 28, 2012, that you give consideration to placing a table of remembrance in a prominent place in the sanctuary of your local church.

Here is a ceremony that we call “Fallen Comrade Ceremony” (author unknown) which can easily be adapted for your morning worship service with the approval of your pastor:

Narrator: While we are honored to have you all present on this Memorial Day Sunday 2012, we would be remiss if we did not pause to remember those who could not be with us.

The table that you see is set for one, in a place of honor. This table is filled with symbolism.

The table cloth is white symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call of duty for our country. This table is our way of symbolizing the fact that members of our armed forces who are missed from our midst. They are commonly called fallen comrades. Some are called POW or MIA. We call them “brothers and sisters.” They are unable to be with us today, and so we remember them because of their sacrifice and incarceration.

The chair represents the thousands of mothers, fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers who waited at home for over (300,000) Americans who would never return.

The red rose represents the hopes and dreams of peace for each soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice for the people of South Korea, Vietnam, Kosovo, Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan (to name a few). 56,685 casualties came with the cease fire following 10 long years of direct U. S. involvement in the Vietnam War.

A slice of lemon on the bread plate is to remind us of the bitter fate of those captured and missing in a foreign land.

A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears endured by those missing and their families who seek answers.

The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God.

The wine glass placed upside down represents their inability to share our toast and all of life’s hope and dreams never realized by those who were lost.

The yellow ribbon represents the hopes and prayers of the thousands of families and friends who waited for the safe return of their loved ones from Operation Desert Shield / Storm of over 500,000 U. S. Service personnel. The hopes and prayers for 246 went unanswered. During the ongoing operations enduring freedom and Iraqi Freedom, and Afghanistan our brothers and sisters continue to make the ultimate sacrifice while securing freedom for us and our allies.

The lighting of the candle serves to remind us of the ultimate sacrifice our fallen comrades and their families have made to preserve the precious freedom we all cherish today.

As a small tribute, I ask that we take a moment of silence as an expression of our gratitude to those whose selfless service enables us to be here today in freedom.

(Note: It would be fitting for a bugler or a recording of Taps be played).

[Editor's comment: May I suggest that you get as many people involved in this ceremony as possible, young and old alike. When you do it will become their ceremony, and you will encourage them to be more involved in your local church, as well as making friends in your community.

Make sure your local newspaper is given opportunity to cover this news story. You will be pleasantly surprised that newspaper editors will be delighted to publish your story.

Acquire the names of all who have served in the Armed Forces from your church and community. People like to be remembered.

May God grant you favor and success with this Memorial Day Sunday ceremony.]

Damon Burrows is now residing in the Community Health Care Center in Wakita, OK

David

[Editor's Commentary: I first met Damon Burrows in the summer of 1970, in Houston, TX. He came for a series of lectures on "Action in the Avenues" a method of witnessing he personally used effectively and taught others to utilize. He conducted this training at the Pentecostal Holiness Church that James and Thelma McDowell were planting in the eastern part of the city.

The Air Force had sent me to the Texas Medical Center where I did an internship in Clinical Pastoral Education at Herman Hospital, a teaching hospital of the University of Texas Medical School and the Institute of Religion and Human Development. We lived on the western part of Houston, but drove some 20 miles one way to the church that at first was meeting in a house.

I was impressed with the genuineness and sincerity of Damon Burrows. Years later he served as the administrative assistant to Bishop Leon Otto Stewart, and worked at Southwestern College. He was a terrific recruiter for students and excelled in that capacity. His love for people was evident to all.

Damon really wanted to be a Navy chaplain. He met all the educational criteria to be qualified, but in those days one had to be a minority to be selected, and, consequently was not chosen. However, in the providence of God he did serve as a member of the Chaplains Ministries, IPHC Board for a total of eight years. In that role he served with professional interest and insight, years of pastoral experience and knowledge of people, and love for the military chaplaincy. He made a significant contribution to our board and often encouraged me. It was a joy to be with him and get his opinion on the issues we were dealing with in those days.

Although he never became a Navy chaplain, he helped me and the board in the recruitment and endorsing of many chaplains. I will always hold him in great admiration. He was a member of that board when we brought the Chaplains Ministries, IPHC into the 21st Century when Dr. Ronald W. Carpenter, Sr. was our chairman.

When I traveled to Vance Air Force Base for the promotion ceremony of Air Force Chaplain Randy Sellers to the rank of Major, I took the time to drive over to Enid to have an extended, leisurely luncheon with Damon and Marilyn. We took the time to visit with David, their son, at his insurance company after our luncheon. David and his wife, April, and their youngest son, Wesley, along with Marilyn came to the promotion ceremony for Chaplain Randy Sellers, and the reception which followed.

Damon pastored the Cornerstone Pentecostal Holiness Church in Wichita, KS, for a number of years, and served as the secretary/treasurer of the Harvest (Kansas) Conference. I preached for him one weekend, and I remember Marilyn playing the organ. She is an excellent musician, and is now a retired public school teacher.

Damon and Marilyn have another son, Damon, who is married and is an attorney in California. They are blessed to have two outstanding sons and their families.

I want to salute Damon Burrows as one of the finest Christian leaders I have ever met. He was a soul winner and that is close to the heart of Jesus for he wants everyone who will to be saved.]

A 2010 graduate of Franklin County High School, she begins her junior year at Emmanuel this fall and is majoring in early childhood education.

“I am unbelievably honored to be Miss Emmanuel for the 2012-13 school year,” Synan says. “Although I am completely undeserving, I know God has placed me in this position to serve my college, peers, and needy children.”

The duties of Miss Emmanuel include speaking at special events on campus, leading a weekly small group, and 20 hours of community service during each semester. “I chose to focus this year on partnering with Children's Rescue Initiative, raising money to free child slaves, and giving them a chance for a happy childhood like we have been blessed to experience,” she says.

Synan is also involved in the campus’ Student Government Association, Baptist Collegiate Ministry, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Next year, she will join Emmanuel’s Cross Country and Track & Field teams, led by Coach Jose Larios.

She also works as a Student Counselor in Enrollment Management. “Libby is an amazing young lady who displays excellence in character and service at all times,” says Wendy Vinson, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing. “She's a great asset to the enrollment team and a godly model of an Emmanuel student.”

Synan’s parents are the Rev. Mr. Bert and Debbie Synan, and her grandparents are Vernon and Phyllis Synan. She is a member of Peniel Pentecostal Holiness Church, where her father serves as pastor.

“I am thrilled to be a part of this time in Emmanuel College's history.
Because of the low hemoglobin count her doctor ordered a blood transfusion (two units of blood) for Friday morning, May 18, 2012. She will enter the outpatient unit at Athens Regional Hospital in Athens at 8 a. m.

This will be Stephanie's first missed day at her work as a teacher at Statham Elementary School since last November.

Stephanie believes that this blood transfusion is as a result of her prayers. She has lacked energy and stamina, and needs this new blood to give her a burst of energy to live a productive life and be at her best.

I obtained Stephanie's permission to let you know about what is currently happening in her life as she wins the battle over cancer. Of course, the battle has already been won by Jesus for us, for by His stripes we are healed.

By the way, the cancer cells discovered in Stephanie's liver came from the original breast cancer cells that spread to her liver.

Here is what I believe about God's intervention in Stephanie's life to heal her completely:

Special Word for Stephanie Ellen Morgan:

God’s Word is at work in Stephanie's body,
Driving out all manner of sickness and disease,
And creating in her body a perfect cure,
For the Glory of God,
The good of Stephanie,
And for a testimony of God’s compassion, love and mercy, His healing power,
and His Saving grace!

Oral Roberts made the following song a centerpiece for our singing in building our faith in God's healing in our generation, as well as all generations:

“Where the Healing Waters Flow”

Oh, the joy of sins forgiven,
Oh, the bliss the blood-washed know,
Oh, the peace akin to heaven,
Where the healing waters flow.

Where the healing waters flow,
Where the joys celestial glow
Oh, there’s peace and rest and love,
Where the healing waters flow.

Now with Jesus crucified
At His feet I’m resting low,
Let me evermore abide
Where the healing waters flow.

Oh, this precious perfect love!
How it keeps the heart aglow,
Streaming from the fount above,
Where the healing waters flow.

Oh, to lean on Jesus’ breast,
While the tempests come and go!
Here is blessed peace and rest,
Where the healing waters flow.

Cleansed from every sin and stain,
Whiter than the driven snow,
Now I sing my sweet refrain,
Where the healing waters flow.

Where the healing waters flow,
Where the joys celestial glow
Oh, there’s peace and rest and love,
Where the healing waters flow.

This news release came to Hugh's News, Inc. on Thursday evening from People to People Ministries in Oklahoma City. Because of the urgency of this medical situation as well as a need for our prayers I have included this story in today's Hugh's News.

Car Accident Threatens 17-year Old's Ability to Walk

George waits patiently to have his arm set.

Yesterday morning, Althea Meyer, missionary to Malawi, contacted our office to notify us that George, her right-hand-man at Malawi's Bible School, and his family were in a serious minibus accident on Friday. George sustained an injury to his right lung and has broken his left arm in several places. He has been able to receive medical attention with no problem. His wife received minor injuries and is doing well. Aida, George's 17-year old daughter, however, needs a miracle.

In the accident, Aida broke her femur just below the hip joint, among other injuries she sustained. The doctors told her that if she didn't have surgery where a specialist can set the bone, she may not ever be able to walk normally again.

Aida (left) with her mother (center) and father (right). Her parents are so happy that People to People has been able to help save their daughter's life. (I did not have time to have photo sized).

Just today, we received an e-mail telling us that Aida has been moved to the hospital where the surgery will take place. Upon arrival, they discovered that Aida's blood count was extremely low. She has received 2 life-saving blood transfusions today and is anxiously awaiting tomorrow's surgery.

The cost of the surgery and a specialist to operate and set the bone is a price that Aida's family simply cannot afford. Depending on how long she will have to stay in the hospital for recovery, the surgery and related medical expenses will cost $2,000-$3,500. We have already sent the base amount, $2,000, trusting that God would provide the funds for this immediate need.

Chaplain Braswell is currently finishing a year of special education in the Army's Family Life Counseling School at Fort Hood, TX. He will be achieving an additional Master's degree in counseling from Texas A&M University-Central Texas.

Jamie has planned a promotion ceremony on Saturday, May 19, at the school on Fort Hood. That is when his new oak leaf (major) will replace the railroad tracks (captain). Jamie and Sandra Braswell parents will be present for this historic event. They have traveled to Kileen, TX, to witness the graduation of Preston Braswell from Memorial Christian Academy. Preston will be attending Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, GA this fall. Preston is an excellent golfer and has made the golf team at Emmanuel as a "walk-on." Outside of playing golf, Preston hopes to play guitar for the Emmanuel Singers or play with a praise and worship band at a local church.

His younger sister, Abbie, is completing the eight grade. She excels in art and piano. We are so very proud of Abbie, too.

Chaplain Braswell has received orders for an overseas assignment to Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany. This is one of the choice assignments for any Air Force chaplain.

The Braswell family will be driving from Kileen, TX, to Franklin Springs to Emmanuel College in August to get Preston situated in his room, and ready for the fall classes. After a few days with family and friends in North Carolina and Virginia, Jamie, Sandra, and Abbie will be flying to Germany.

We salute the Braswell family and what God is doing in their lives. Let us remember them in our prayers as their continue their ministry at Ramstein Air Force Base.

The following is the Citation that accompanied the Bronze Star:

FOR EXCEPTIONALLY MERITORIOUS SERVICE WHILE SERVING AS TASK FORCE CHAPLAIN WHILE DEPLOYED IN SUPPORT OF OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM 11-12. CHAPLAIN (CAPTAIN) WARD'S OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE, EXPERTISE, AND DEDICATION TO DUTY GREATLY CONTRIBUTED TO THE SUCCESS OF THE TASK FORCE LOBOS MISSION. HIS DISTINCTIVE ACCOMPLISHMENTS REFLECT GREAT CREDIT UPON HIM, TASK FORCE LOBOS, 1ST AIR CAVALRY BRIGADE, US FORCES-AFGHANISTAN (NORTH), AND THE UNITED STATES ARMY.

The following is a copy of the wording from a DA638 requesting approval for a Bronze Star Medal:

Chaplain (Captain) James P. Ward distinguished himself through exceptional meritorious service to the United States Army as the Task Force Chaplain for 2nd Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, Task Force Lobos, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, Camp Marmal, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 11-12. CH Ward ministered to members of the largest Aviation Task Force of the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, including 9 subordinate companies and 590 assigned and attached Soldiers operating at 5 forward operating locations.

CH Ward conducted over 920 pastoral counseling sessions covering a full spectrum of interpersonal, marriage, financial, and behavioral issues, referring to behavioral health or other support agencies as required. He conducted over 20 reintegration briefings for Soldiers departing on R&R Leave, empowering Soldiers with interpersonal skills to minimize family conflict generated by extended separation. He trained over 150 Soldiers in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills, providing a critical resource to Soldiers throughout Camp Marmal.

The 1ACB Brigade Chaplain handpicked CH Ward to spearhead a 9/11 Prayer Luncheon to celebrate the courage and determination of the United States and her coalition allies. CH Ward coordinated every aspect of the event, including developing an agenda, generating and distributing advertising materials, securing a location and logistical support from Camp agencies, scheduling a General Officer guest speaker, and coordinating actions of other participants. This dignified event provided inspiration and perspective to over 200 attendees.

CH Ward conducted 65 Protestant Gospel services and taught over 100 Bible study lessons open to a camp populace of over 2,500 American and International Security Assistance Force members. More individuals attended CH Ward's weekly Gospel service than any other weekly religious offering on Camp Marmal. He provided personal ministry throughout Regional Command-North, requiring his travel of over 6,000 miles to meet the spiritual and emotional needs of Task Force personnel at outlying Forward Operating Bases.

[Editor's Commentary: It is my observation since Chaplain James Ward has entered active duty as an Army chaplain that he is a servant leader who makes himself available to his soldiers wherever they are. He has earned credibility, confidence, and trust by demonstrating a genuine ministry that puts others before himself.

Chaplain Ward's 12 month deployment ends this week. He will be leaving Afghanistan on Saturday, May 19, 2012. He has been separated from his wife and children for the majority of his active duty service (almost 3 years). The sacrifices that he, his wife, Joy, and their children have made have been enormous. I am happy for them that they will be reunited and be able to accompany James to his next assignment.

Prior to going on active duty as an Army chaplain, Chaplain Ward was the senior pastor at the Stoneville Pentecostal Holiness Church in the Cornerstone Conference (formerly Western North Carolina Conference).

In a recent report from Chaplain James Ward he gave this report:

After twelve (12) months at Camp Marmal, Afghanistan, I am in my last week of this deployment. This has been a very productive time for me. Because of the many conversations and experiences I have had over the last year, I am all the more aware of the importance of a Chaplain in the life of a Soldier. They sacrifice so much more than their safety and well-being. Military Families lay aside convenience and comfort, risk relationships and lose connection with their loved ones for long stretches of time. Just the distance away makes it hard. To be in a threatening environment is enough, but they give up a lot so that the rest of us can have the greater advantages in life.

During the last year, I have pastored the Camp Marmal Gospel Service that includes a Monday Prayer Meeting, a Women's Ministry and a weekly Bible Study. The choir is famous at Camp Marmal and we practice on Thursday and Saturday evenings. It has been a great part of my work here in Afghanistan. I am always amazed at the fact that the Gospel is being preached IN AFGHANISTAN. Souls have come to know Christ, many have rededicated their lives to the Lord and the service has grown to more than 70 in attendance. I am so thankful for the people of and the privilege to serve the Gospel Service.

While attached to 2-227 Aviation Regiment, I have organized a 9/11 Prayer Luncheon for more than 200 persons which included a General Officer as the guest speaker, worked with another Officer to form a monthly morale building day for Soldiers who just need time to refocus, trained 150 Soldiers in the skills of Suicide Intervention, and traveled to outlying FOBs to provide religious support and services on a regular basis.

Sir, my EML (R&R) was the longest period of time I have had with my Family in almost three years. I love my wife more today than ever. My boys are growing into fine and exceptional young men who continue to follow Christ. And I still have a while with my baby girl who is now 12 years old and looking forward to moving to San Antonio, Texas with her mom and dad before the end of 2012.

God has given us great favor! I am thankful to be where I am with the Command Team that I serve. They have given me the space to care for Soldiers and the kind of support that has set me up for success. I was recently able to tell my Commander, "Sir, it is my belief that God has placed me here ... with the right Commander, the right unit ... and I worked hard to do the right thing for God and the Soldiers of Task Force Lobos." I really believe that!

I will go back to Fort Hood, Texas, knowing that I did what I could. I did the best I could. From the inside, I am better able to support the troops and a have a great respect for people who, for whatever reason, promise to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. It is a noble and honorable profession that has necessarily given so much more than I would have ever thought. I salute the Soldier. I surrender all to Christ.

++++

Now, you can get a bird's eye view of a young chaplain who has sacrificed so much to serve our soldiers in Afghanistan. I rejoice that the Gospel of Jesus Christ was proclaimed and that soldiers came to know Jesus Christ, and many rededicated their lives to Him.

Would you, my readers, join me in prayer for Chaplain James Ward successful flight back to the States and to his family?

Hannah Luce, daughter of Teen Mania founder Ron Luce, is continuing to improve as she recovers from a plane crash last Friday. She was the sole survivor among the five on board.

"The fact that Hannah is here with us is a miracle, and while I am overjoyed and so thankful to God that she's here, I am also deeply saddened at the loss of Austin, Stephen, Garrett and Luke," Ron Luce wrote Tuesday on his blog. "I can't even begin to understand the pain their parents are feeling right now."

Memorial services for Garrett Coble, Stephen Luth, Luke Sheets (pilot), and Austin Anderson are scheduled for this week.

Luce told the "Today" show Wednesday that his 22-year-old daughter is talking and just yesterday began recounting the events surrounding the crash. He did not provide details, but said Hannah was awake throughout the entire ordeal, from the time the 8-seater plane took off from an airport in Tulsa, OK, to the moment it landed in a field in Kansas, skidded and then burst into flames after hitting trees.

"When she is ready, she'll tell her story," Ron Luce said.

The group of five friends were on their way to an "Acquire the Fire" event, led by Teen Mania, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. According to Teen Mania spokesperson Cindy Mallette, they had decided to fly rather than drive to the May 11-12 rally where thousands of teens would be worshiping and getting fired up to live for God.

[Editor's Comment: I am grateful to my first cousin, Mary Anne Shropshire Weeks, of Richmond, VA, for sending the website of Ron Luce to get this story. Mary Anne is a blood relative of Melvine whose mother was a Shropshire, and Mary Anne's father was a Shropshire, and Frances and Wesley were a brother and sister.

All of us were deeply moved by the report of the airplane crash last week and those who lost their lives. They were all connected with Oral Roberts University.

Kaye had told me at the South Carolina Conference Camp Meeting in Lake City, SC, a few years ago that she grew up in a Pentecostal Holiness pastor's home. If anyone can help me, I would like to know more about her father and mother and her experience in our denomination.

I plan to send her a letter of encouragement and comfort, and hopefully connect with her.

I am amazed at the number of Canadians who are subscribers to Hugh's News.
Thank you so much for your continued prayers for me over the past few months. It has been a challenging time for me physically; but, The Good Lord Jesus Christ has brought me through yet again. He is so faithful to His Word and to me.

I was only a few days away from celebrating my 10th anniversary of being diagnosed with Stage IV Breast Cancer when I had a turn for the worst. In May I had a PET scan that showed spots on my liver. I went to The Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University Medical Center in Atlanta to see Dr. Ruth O'Regan for her opinion. She felt like I was doing fine and the spots on my liver had probably been there from the beginning. She felt I should possibly do a clinical trial and take it from there.

Dr. Vrana, my oncologist in Athens, GA, did not like it at all, and wanted me to begin chemotherapy immediately. I went with Dr. O'Regan's opinion.

The pain was increasing and in late October Dr. Vrana and Dr. O'Regan decided that chemotherapy would be the best choice for my health. Dr. Vrana called me at work and told me what I needed to do. I remember crying and going home early that day. I didn't want to go down that road again, but the Lord had opened the door so I needed to walk through it. I was told the drug I would be taking was powerful, and that I would lose my hair within 3 weeks. I began on November 4, 2011, and had three treatments, one each week, the last being my birthday, November 18, 2011. I found that my hair was coming out by the hands full.

The Lord is so good and so kind to me. Previously when I had chemo for 2 years I did not lose my hair. I prayed specificially for it and knew that God would honor that prayer. This time, I felt the Lord preparing me for losing my hair. This was one of the most difficult things I have ever experienced in my life. I would look in the mirror many times a day, and see a bald young woman who wasn't Stephanie Morgan. I saw a sick, old lady who was a shell of someone else, not me. I put up pictures all around the room of me when I was young and healthy. I would look at those pictures and say, "That's me! That's the real Stephanie."

My hair is growing back now. It is short and thick, like a little boy who has just had his hair cut for the summer. I can't wait for it to grow longer again!

Let me tell you how good God is and how He helped me deal with losing my hair. One of my friends, Joyce Hawkins, has a friend who lost her hair when she went through chemo for breast cancer. She went to a wig shop in Watkinsville, GA, called Mary Lou's Garden. I was able to call the owner who opened up her shop for me on a Sunday afternoon. She spent two hours with me and helped me find a perfect wig that looks just like my hair. The only difference is that it is a little lighter than my original color. I have gotten more compliments on my wig. Most people have no idea it is a wig which was my goal. She also helped me get a turban to wear over my head whenever I didn't want to wear my wig so that I would look presentable. It was important for my students to see me with hair. Structure is important to them, and seeing me with no hair would have been very difficult for them. To this day none of them has mentioned my hair.

Little did I know I would be in the hospital just 2 days later for a week because of complications from my new chemotherapy treatment. God's provision had been provided, and a dear friend of my father's and our family in another state, sent the money to pay for this expensive wig. How blessed I am.

I had 2 transfusions and a 4 day stay in Athens Regional Hospital in Athens, Georgia. This unfortunately included Thanksgiving. The chemo had caused my bladder to be inflamed, and they could not stop the bleeding. Every time I urinated I only saw blood. This caused me to be weak, and I had to come back several times for more blood transfusions. I was unable to go back to school for the rest of the 3 weeks until Christmas Vacation.

The side effects are always the toughest things to handle with chemotherapy. The worst was the bleeding in my bladder. I had to go in for a 2 hour surgery as they explored what was wrong with my bladder.

Another side effect has been neuropathy. This sensation is a tingling in my feet. I take a lot of meds to help with side effects like this and constipation, etc. I was so weak after the surgery that I decided to move in with Mom and Dad. I have been there ever since. I don't know how I would make it without them. Mom has been to each of my doctor and hospital visits, and is a constant source of strength and wisdom.

One of the things that I was so concerned about was being able to go back to teaching after the Christmas holidays. I could barely walk across the room without my strength giving out, but I was determined to reach my goal. I spent that time reading the Word of God and claiming those promises for my life.

I read Dodie O'Steen's healing Scriptures aloud and I spoke them in faith over my body. God's Word is alive and active in me!! "With long life I will satisfy 'Stephanie" and show her My salvation" (Psalms 91:16). "He was wounded for my transgressions, He was bruised for my iniquities. The chastisement for my peace was upon Him. And by His stripes I am healed!" (Isaiah 53:5). "I shall not die but live, and declare the works of the Lord!" (Psalms 118:17). I could go on and on! His Word is life and healing to me!

My oncologists decided to change my chemo to a less powerful drug. However, I had an instant reaction to it, and was surrounded by nurses and doctors in less than a minute! Boy, was that scary! Needless to say I was allergic to that drug, and they changed me yet again to another chemo. This one is working well and is not as harsh on my body.

My hair is growing back with this drug which is an answer to my prayers. I go once a week, every Thursday afternoon after I teach my kindergarteners. My principal, Mac Almond, who is a wonderful Christian, has been so supportive of me during this whole ordeal. God has given me the strength to teach and go through chemo at the same time.

I still need your prayers. I have 2 weeks of school left. I will officially finish on Friday, May 25th. Pray that God gives me strength to finish teaching and get all my end of the year paperwork done. I am so thankful that God has given me a wonderful parapro, Kathleen Deaton, who is helping me each day at school.

I ask that you specifically pray that God will give me strength and stamina. Many days as I go throughout the day, I will say aloud at school, "The joy of the Lord is my strength."

My latest CAT scan showed that my liver is 50% better than it was before the chemo. Dr. Vrana wants to do another scan, probably a PET scan by the end of May or beginning of June. I am believing for my liver to be 100% improved. God is faithful and I want to testify that He is faithful to me. I believe that it is just a matter of time, and I shall be completely healed.

God bless you all! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your care and love for me, as well as your many prayers on my behalf.

[Editor's comment: For those who are new subscribers or who have come to this website by the providence of God as you have surfed the Internet, I want you to know that Stephanie Ellen Morgan is our daughter. Melvine is my wife of almost 52 years (August 13, 1960). Stephanie was born at Madigan Army General Hospital at Fort Lewis, WA, when I was stationed at McChord AFB, WA, on November 18, 1966.

Stephanie graduated from Shades Valley High School in Birmingham, AL, when we lived in Hoover, AL, and I was the senior pastor of Good Shepherd Pentecostal Holiness Church.

In the meantime, Stephanie joined the Cornerstone Church of God in Athens, GA, and is very active in that church. She has sung in the choir, on the praise team, and has sung solos.

She is a joy and delight of our lives. Through her suffering God is teaching us more about Himself, and the sufferings of Jesus.

Here is a Scripture God is letting us understand more fully in the sufferings of our Stephanie:

2 Corinthians 4:15-18
As a discipleship resource, it is flexible enough to be used in a variety of settings, from individual reading to one-on-one sessions to Sunday school classes to small group Bible studies. It makes an ideal gift for new Christians, and a great text to use in classes for new church members or candidates for baptism. For more experienced Christians, it can also serve as an excellent review to get "back to the basics" from time to time.

There was a tragic plane crash in southern Kansas yesterday and five people with connections to ORU were involved in the accident.

Stephen Luth, Luke Sheets, and Austin Anderson, all three recent graduates, and Garret Coble, a former instructor in the College of Business, have died. Hannah Luce, a recent graduate and daughter of ORU Trustee Ron Luce, is in the hospital.

Please pray for all of the families that lost loved ones and for Hannah in the hospital. Pray for God’s peace to be with all of them and pray for Hannah’s healing.

Your Servant at ORU,
Mark Rutland Ph. D.

[Editor's comment: We are all saddened when tragic events happen to those connected with Christian institutions of higher education, like Oral Roberts University.

This current news brings back my memory of the tragic airplane crash in February 1977 when Marshall Nash, 38, and his wife Rebecca Roberts Nash, 37, (the eldest child and first daughter of Oral and Evelyn Roberts) when their aircraft went down in a wheat field in Kansas. They lost their lives, along with five other people, including the pilot.

At that time, I was serving as president of Southwestern College. I sent condolences to Oral and Evelyn Roberts and Walter J. and Frances Nash, as well as a wreath of flowers from the college.

It was Bill (an older brother) and Edna Earle Nash, his wife, who loving received Marshall and Rebecca's children: Brenda, 12, Marcia, 7, and Jon, 4, into their home. They successfully took care of them and they grew up to be outstanding young people, and successful Christian adults. Bill Nash and I were classmates at Emmanuel.

While I was pastor of Tarkenton Memorial Church in Athens, Marcia Nash came by the church one day with a relative, Bernice Healan of Gainesville, GA, to see the church. I was able to tell her some stories about her father when he was in high school and I was a freshman at Emmanuel College, and recommended that she go over to Franklin Springs to see where the Nash family lived. There were three sons in the Nash family: James, Bill and Marshall. Bill is alive and well, and continues to be a friend today.

I remember Marshall living in DC with his parents and attending American University where he majored in business administration as I recall. I was in the Marine Corps at Quantico and hitchhiked to DC to attend the National Pentecostal Holiness Church where Bill and Marshall's father was the pastor.

May God bless all those whom we remember this day and keep them. May His comfort and peace be with those who grieve the loss of loved ones and friends.]
I found it on the Grant Jeffrey Ministries website:

"Friday evening, May 11, 2012, at 11:09 p.m. Grant Jeffrey had a cardiac arrest and the angels escorted his spirit to his heavenly home. He is now without pain, he is healed and now with his Heavenly Father. He will be missed sorely!

"Funeral arrangements will be posted here on Tuesday May 15, 2012, and will be held in Toronto, ON, Canada.

"May God bless you as you remember Kaye and the family in your prayers!"

[Editor's comment: Information concerning the funeral arrangements have been difficult to come by. This is a time of shock, grief, and sorrow for this outstanding family. I am sure it is taking time to finalize the plans for the memorial service when considering friends not only in the United States, but in other countries who would like to show their respects for Grant Jeffrey and his wife, Kaye, and their family.

An apology is in order to Kaye and her family. I misspelled the name Jeffrey. Although I am confident there are several ways to spell that name, there is only one spelling that his parents gave him. Names are important to this editor, and I just goofed.

I want to thank a faithful reader of Hugh's News who picked up my mistake and took the time to write and tell me. I am always grateful when anyone finds an error and corrects me. I am never offended. Now, that I have Jeffrey spelled correctly, I stand approved as corrected.]

My response to Doris:

Dear Doris,

Thank you for the news about Grant Jeffrey. I met him and Kaye in Lake City, SC, a few years ago at the South Carolina Conference Camp Meeting. To my amazement, they both knew me because of Hugh's News. I was shocked and amazed. They were very gracious to me and Grant gave me a couple of his books and autographed them for me.

Kaye told me that she grew up in the home of a Pentecostal Holiness pastor. Since that personal meeting of Kaye and Grant, we have had several Canadians to subscribe to Hugh's News. However, I have had not further contact with Grant and Kaye.

Please send me more information, a photo and the obituary. I will be happy to announce this news to the readers of Hugh's News.

Meanwhile, I went on the Internet and discovered the following:

Grant R. Jeffrey was a Canadian Bible teacher of Bible prophecy/eschatology and Biblical archaeology and a proponent of dispensational evangelical Christianity. As chairman of Frontier Research Publications for more than 20 years, Jeffrey's 25 books have been translated into 24 languages. He also appears on television and radio shows, particularly on Christian programs, and also attends speaking engagements around the globe.

Grant Jeffery's website revealed that prior to his death he was in serious condition in a hospital in Toronto, Canada.

As the news unfolds, I will endeavor to keep you informed. Let us pray for Kaye and her family in this time of grief and sorrow.

Your friend in all seasons,

It was Bishop J. Floyd Williams who called me one day when I was meeting with our Protestant chaplains planning for the Advent season and preaching schedule in our medical center, the largest hospital and clinics under one roof in the Air Force. He told me that God had impressed him to call me and offer the presidency of Southwestern College. He told me that Dr. W. R. Corvin had resigned and that he and the executive board felt I was the man to be the successor to Dr. Corvin.

I was shocked and stunned by such an offer. I thought this is not real, and I told Bishop Williams that I was going to hang up because I felt he was calling the wrong person. He shouted, "Chaplain Morgan, don't you do that."

I was faced with a dilemma. I had been given three scholarships by the Chief of Air Force Chaplains to get special education and clinical training to become a Certified Supervisor in Clinical Pastoral Education. The truth is that I owed the Air Force one more year of active duty to pay for the education the Air Force had spent on my advanced education. At that time, I was the senior ranking chaplain of three certified supervisors that were stationed with me, and we had conducted two CPE courses.

You can be sure I fasted and prayed about such an offer that would mean I would have to resign my regular commission as an Air Force officer and chaplain. I had been selected for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, and was on my way to a successful and fruitful career. I was within six years of retirement.

Melvine was reading in the Psalms in the Living Bible at that time and suggested that I consider reading Psalm 139. It was as I read that chapter that God began to speak to me from that chapter, and it became a Rhema Word from the written Logos Word to my heart and mind.

The rest is history. I did resign my regular commission, but only after I conferred with Chaplain, Major General, Henry J. Meade, a Roman Catholic Chief of Air Force Chaplains. He said, "Hugh, if your Pentecostal Holiness Bishop wants you to leave the Air Force to be present of one of your colleges, I will waiver the requirement concerning giving back a year of more of active duty. I believed then as well as now that God used a Roman Catholic Chief of Air Force Chaplains to open the door from my exodus from active duty in the Air Force with the promise that I could go into the Air Force Reserve in the same rank to complete my career. And with God's help, I completed my mission.

As I read this chapter in the Living Bible, God gave me a title for each of the six paragraphs. I hope you will find meaning for your own life from this divinely inspired writing on King David, the greatest king of Israel, "a man after God's own heart." 1 Samuel 13:14, " . . . the LORD hath sought Him a man after His own heart" (KJV).

Here are the titles (six in all) for each paragraph in Psalm 139,The Living Bible that God gave me when I was considering making a decision to resign my commission in the Air Force, and become the third President of Southwestern College in the fall of 1974.

The Searching of God’s Presence

1 O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. 2 You know when I sit or stand. When far away you know my every thought. 3 You chart the path ahead of me and tell me where to stop and rest. Every moment you know where I am. 4 You know what I am going to say before I even say it. 5 You both precede and follow me and place your hand of blessing on my head.

The Scope of God’s Presence

6 This is too glorious, too wonderful to believe! 7 I can never be lost to your Spirit! I can never get away from my God! 8 If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the place of the dead, you are there. 9 If I ride the morning winds to the farthest oceans, 10 even there your hand will guide me, your strength will support me. 11 If I try to hide in the darkness, the night becomes light around me. 12 For even darkness cannot hide from God; to you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are both alike to you.

The Satisfaction of God’s Presence

13 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit them together in my mother's womb. 14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! It is amazing to think about. Your workmanship is marvelous-and how well I know it. 15 You were there while I was being formed in utter seclusion! 16 You saw me before I was born and scheduled each day of my life before I began to breathe. Every day was recorded in your book!

The Security of God’s Presence

17 How precious it is, Lord, to realize that you are thinking about me constantly! I can't even count how many times a day your thoughts turn toward me. And when I waken in the morning, you are still thinking of me!

The Severity of God’s Presence

19 Surely you will slay the wicked, Lord! Away, bloodthirsty men! Begone! 20 They blaspheme your name and stand in arrogance against you-how silly can they be? 21 O Lord, shouldn't I hate those who hate you? Shouldn't I be grieved with them? 22 Yes, I hate them, for your enemies are my enemies too.

The Supplication of God’s Presence

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test my thoughts. 24 Point out anything you find in me that makes you sad, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.
TLB

And now, will you receive the Benediction God has for your this day?

Hebrews 13:20-21
Now the God of peace, Who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

21 Make you perfect in every good work to do His will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to Whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

[Editor's Comment: I have known Frank Kesling for several years. His last name caught my attention when I met him at the Upper South Carolina Ministers and Spouses Retreat at Sevierville, TN.

I was especially interested when I learned that Garth Kesling was his brother. I remembered that Garth was the father of Army Chaplain, Major, Terry Kesling, who is presently stationed at Fort Detrick, MD, near Camp David.

Let us remember this outstanding family in our prayers.

I am grateful to Donna Lance and David Richardson, Jr. of the Upper South Carolina Conference for this news, and for the website of the funeral home where I got the obituary and photo. I want to thank Mel Tinney, my webmaster in Wisconsin for sizing the photo for Hugh's News. He is truly a Christian professional in meeting so many needs of this ministry through his technical knowledge and expertise.]

The first week of May is "finals week" for Southwestern Christian University and most students are now running on caffeine and sugar after pulling all-nighters to study and praying they earn a high enough grade to finish the class with proper results.

As if that’s not enough for any collegiate scholar, two groups of athletes are still going strong as the spring sports schedules enter post-season action. On Monday, April 30th, the SCU women’s softball team completed day one of the NCCAA Central Region Softball Tournament, which is being co-hosted by Southwestern Christian and Mid-America Christian at the SCU softball field. The second-seeded Lady Eagles dropped a 3-0 decision to the third-seed, Mid-America Christian, to begin tournament play on Monday, but battled back in the nightcap for a strong 7-1 finish over Crowley’s Ridge College. The squad will finish the tournament today, taking on the loser of Central Baptist College and Mid-America Christian at 1 p. m. The winner of that game will then advance to the championship at 3 p. m.

Southwestern Christian wrapped up their regular-season action with a final record of 19-28 and 10-4 in the MCAC. The Lady Eagles thumped every team in the MCAC besides Bellevue and fourth-ranked Central Baptist College, which earned them third-place finish in the conference. They will compete in the conference tournament beginning on Thursday, May 3rd, taking on Bellevue University at 2 p. m. at Central Baptist College’s field in Conway, Arkansas.

On Friday, April 27th, Southwestern Christian hosted the MCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Yukon High School. The women’s team finished third out of the four teams in the meet and the men’s team finished in first place. Cameron Williamson was named the Outstanding Male Performer for the meet. The teams will now compete in the NCCAA Outdoor Championships beginning on May 5th-7th in Judson, Illinois followed by the NAIA Outdoor Championships on May 24th-26th in Marion, Indiana. The Eagle golf team wrapped up their 2012 spring schedule at the MCAC tournament on Tuesday, April 24th in Lawrence, Kansas, finishing fourth out of six teams competing. The men’s squad will be back in action in the fall of 2012 alongside a women’s squad which Coach Mark Arthur announced the reinstatement of in April.

Understanding the ends and outs of computers of every size has become the mainstream focus as more and more updates to the growing technology industry occur. As the industry has taken off, so have the options of what can actually be done using a computer. It has become a world seeking knowledge where results are expected to be instantaneous. Access to almost any information in a matter of seconds is available on a tiny computer that can not only make phone calls, but access the worldwide web from any location.

The resourcefulness of our world today can be applied to almost anything and everything, including school libraries. While the SCU Library is still filled with rows upon rows of shelves of books accompanied by the musty-paper scent, students now have other options, and more resources, when it comes to their search for knowledge. Since 2003, SCU, by virtue of the Library Director's participation in the Oklahoma Council of Academic Library Directors (OCALD), a sub-group under the Oklahoma Regents for Higher Learning, has been able to participate in the state wide subscriptions offered through that body to academic institutions in the state. Through that collaborative purchasing plan, even small institutions have been added to provide many of the same database resources provided by the largest state schools. Through block purchasing this has been provided at a greatly reduced price per student, making it possible for SCU to provide access to some of the key flagship databases offered in state schools such as Ebscohost, SIRS, and FirstSearch/WorldCat. These state resources are foundational to student life in Oklahoma. Ebscohost, for example, provides access to nearly 4,000 full-text, peer-reviewed journals across many fields from business to medicine.

"No institution could cover the cost of print copies of all of those publications so the savings are tremendous,” noted Marilyn Hudson, SCU Library Director. Hudson, whose Master of Library and Information Studies comes from the University of Oklahoma.

Students can not only access those resources on campus, but also remotely, which is an integral part of meeting the learning behavior needs of today's students.

Most recently, SCU has added additional resources through an agreement with LIRN (Library and Information Resources Network, Inc.) for access to additional resources such as Credeo Reference, ProQuest, Books in Print, and more.

“Some of these database resources, if subscribed to individually, might cost as much as an entire subscription package. Credeo Reference is an outstanding research tool and ProQuest is one of many stellar resources expected on many campuses. Increasingly, due to changes in learning and teaching, one of the largest expenditures on most campuses is in electronically accessed resources such as databases, e-books, etc.” Through these resources, both campus and distant learners will have instant and unlimited access to an outstanding set of resources, helping to enhance their educational work and success as students of Southwestern Christian University.

SCU Graduate School Approved for Master of Arts in Theological Studies Program

Applications for enrollment are beginning immediately as courses are set to begin in the upcoming Fall 2012 semester with classes offered on both the Bethany and Tulsa campuses as well as at Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Georgia and also online.

"This is a historic day for higher education in the International Pentecostal Holiness Church and Southwestern Christian University,” stated Dr. Tramel. “For 18 years, the Graduate School at SCU has served the IPHC and the body of Christ by providing a Master of Ministry degree to over 350 students from all over America and around the world. Now, the long and laborious dream of many people has been realized with the approval to also offer the Master of Arts in Theological Studies. This new academic degree is especially beneficial for all of those who seek further studies in Bible and theology in preparation for research, writing, preaching, or teaching in higher education.”

The Graduate School will continue to offer the Master of Ministry degree for all of those seeking a more practical education. The offering of the M.A.T.S. is the first visible step toward one day having a full fledged seminary in which to train ministers in the IPHC.
