You excitedly prepare for months to be able to raise the money and win souls for Christ. After raising the money, packing your bags, and much prayer, you’re ready to go.

I had the privilege of going to Uganda with the small short term mission team from my home church in Athens, Georgia. Our team included my senior pastor J. Brian Williams, children and youth pastor, Matthew Smith, Alan Kizza our Ugandan church member who served us in so many ways, and myself.

When we got to the airport in Entebbe, Uganda we were exhausted. Well, we should have been after spending 20+ hours on 3 different airplanes, and having layovers in Chicago, Illinois and Brussels, Belgium. We arrived late at night local time, which was nice, because we were able to go to bed soon after being greeted at the lovely guest house. Because it was so dark though, we could not see the beautiful scenery until the next morning.

The next morning we woke up and saw a beautiful landscape behind us. There were many fruit trees, including banana trees and fruit trees we had never heard of, let alone seen. We had a delicious breakfast then we visited the little orphanage next door called The Baby House. We also visited the Bible College which was just down the hill. They had a number of students from Uganda, neighboring countries, and even Ghana in West Africa.

The next thing we knew, we were whisked out in the middle of the country to the area called “the bush.” You basically drive to the middle of nowhere on extremely bumpy roads, and voila. You’re there! The name of the village where we went was called Balenge [ba-len-gay]. The meaning of the town’s name is unknown, but Pastor Kaweesa said he would not be surprised if it was not named after a demon or something to do with witchcraft. We later learned that the forefathers of Africa were into sorcery and demon worship, much like the history of Haiti, for example.

Balenge is actually quite beautiful. There are many banana trees, various bushes some filled with red hot peppers, and there is also sugar cane. There are houses that are small, and some even tiny. Families are very important and you see them working on their small farms. I saw a young boy who looked like he was about six pull a bull with a rope. It was fascinating to watch.

Out in the bush, Pastor J. Brian, Pastor Matthew, and I really stood out in the crowd as the only white people. The children, and even some adults, would stare at us as if we were something special. It was fun to wave at them and then see them wave back.

I was really impressed at how appreciative the Ugandan people were. Whenever we would meet someone, he or she would greet us by saying, “You are most welcome.” The way in which they said it was so genuine and kind.

The children were also quite appreciative. I helped Pastor Matt with children’s church a couple of times. He had a lesson with balloons. He would form the balloons into different shapes and he had a lesson about the armor of God. As is often the case, some of the balloons would pop. Instead of discarding the remains, the children would save even the scraps and figure out a way to play with it.

I was also amazed that during the children’s lessons that some girls who must have been six or seven, would care for baby siblings. They knew how to care for them as if they were grown.

I discovered that the family unit is more important to Ugandans than things. I feel that I learned more from the Ugandans than they learned from me in that regard. However, I am thrilled that we were able to pray for the sick and lead the precious people to Christ.

In the 12 days that we were in Uganda, we ministered in the crusade, schools, orphanages, and in a prison. A medical team served over 700 patients while we were in the bush. Some of the patients had never seen a doctor before.

I was especially blessed on this mission. My finances came in rather easily, and I could feel the prayers of my supporters and people from my church as well. I know that the Lord works all over the world, and I could actually feel his presence in Africa. God bless you!

Frances was a lifetime member of Draper Pentecostal Holiness Church. She also worked and retired from Belk Department Store with 45 years of service. She was a graduate of Tri-City High School, class of 1953. Along with working she was also a member of the Draper Volunteer Fire Department Axillary where she assisted in serving refreshments to the firemen.

She is survived by her sister, Doris Troxler of Eden, NC.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church, and other times at the home.

A memorial service celebrating the life and legacy of Frances Troxler will be conducted by pastors Jonathan Todd, Draper P. H. Church, and Ben Rose, Victory Hill P. H. Church, near Stoneville, NC.

[Editor's comment: Frances Troxler was a lifelong friend of my wife, Melvine Stewart Morgan. They grew up in Eden, NC, and were members of the Draper Pentecostal Holiness Church, and graduated from high school together.

Frances was a dear friend of our family, in fact, Greg and Stephanie, our two children called her and her sister, Doris, Aunt Doris and Aunt Frances. We visited with them in their home for Memorial Day weekend just a few weeks ago, and attended the Draper Pentecostal Holiness Church on that Sunday with them. We always stay in the Hampton Inn in Eden, a lovely hotel that meets our needs for traveling.

Frances was a wonderful cook, and enjoyed preparing southern fried steak and gravy with biscuits, mashed potatoes, green beans, potato salad, deviled eggs, etc. Frances and Doris were a team in cooking and always had plenty of food on their table.

We enjoyed dining with them at Fisherman's Galley, the best seafood restaurant in that part of the country. Frances loved fried oysters, and would always request that they be fried "a tad bit more." I liked to hear her say that.

Frances always made us several containers of pimento cheese when we visited their home during the year. I enjoy eating pimento cheese and crackers, or on toasted bread.

For many years Frances taught the beginners Sunday school class at the Draper P. H. Church. That was one of many gifts Frances had and she gave to the church with joy and delight. She and Doris were noted for their creative Advent and Christmas decorations for the church.

Their work and ministry to the fire department of Eden has been exemplary. Their concern and love for first responders has been noteworthy.

Doris and Frances visited Melvine and me when I was a seminary student at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, KY. They visited us when we lived in Atlanta and in Houston, TX, as well as our home in Athens, and our home in Winder, GA.

They came with a bus load of church members from the Draper Pentecostal Holiness Church when Stephanie died. They were present for the visitation night and the memorial service.

We will greatly miss Frances. She was a great Christian lady, loved Jesus and the church, was faithful in her attendance and involvement, and you could always count on her to lend a helping hand when one was needed. She always called me "Sugar."]
He wanted badly to take some of his money with him. He called his priest, his doctor and his lawyer to his bedside. "Here's $30,000 cash to be held by each of you. I trust you to put this in my coffin when I die so I can take all my money with me."

At the funeral, each man put an envelope in the coffin. Riding away in a limousine, the priest suddenly broke into tears and confessed, "I had only put $20,000 into the envelope because I needed $10,000 for a new baptistery."

"Well, since we're confiding in each other," said the doctor, "I only put $10,000 in the envelope because we needed a new machine at the hospital which cost $20,000."

The lawyer was aghast. "I'm ashamed of both of you," he exclaimed. "I want it known that when I put my envelope in that coffin, it held my personal check for the full $30,000."

Mr. J. Brian Williams, and his congregation, in welcoming you today, Father's Day 2013, June 16, to hear our Presiding Bishop A. D. "Doug" Beacham, Jr. preach to us in our morning worship service at Christian Life Worship Center (formerly Tarkenton Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church) at 10:50 a. m.

Christian Life Worship Center is located at 125 Kathwood Drive in Athens, GA. It is one mile west of the Athens Perimeter just off US Highway 129.

As the editor of Hugh's News and Commentary, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our General Superintendent/Presiding Bishop Arthur Douglas Beacham, Jr.

Bishop Beacham comes to office in the Will of God for him to lead and serve the 3.8 million members of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church in 103 countries. All of her ministries, her 25,000 ministers, and her 18,000 churches serve under the leadership of her General Superintendent/Presiding Bishop.

I am reminded of the lyrics of a popular song children love to sing in elementary school, entitled, "Getting to Know You." Let me share with you the meaningful words of this lovely song:

"Getting to Know You"
Songwriters: Neville Powell and Horace Hinds

"Getting to know you, getting to know all about you,
Getting to like you, getting to hope you like me,
Getting to know you, putting it my way, but nicely,
You are my cup of tea.

"Getting to know you, getting to feel free and easy,
When I am with you, getting to know what to say.
Haven't you noticed? Suddenly I'm bright and breezy,
Because of all the beautiful things and new things
I'm learning about you day by day."

It is the observation of this editor, as well as the former director/endorser of Chaplains Ministries, IPHC, that I should let you know that Bishop A. D. "Doug" Beacham, Jr. is the first military chaplain, either in the active duty or reserve components, ever to serve the IPHC as the General Superintendent. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserve in the fall of 2001.

There is one other former general superintendent who served in the Army as an enlisted soldier for a short period of time. He was Bishop J. H. King. I asked Dr. Tony Moon, who is the authority of the life and ministry of Bishop King, if this was true. Dr. Moon is in the process of writing a book on Bishop King. Here is what Tony shared with me:

In his book,Yet Speaketh, Bishop King indicated that he served in the Army for a little over four months. He enlisted in order to get college education benefits. At the time he had very little formal education and had no ministerial credentials. I suppose he did boot camp at Augusta—he just refers to 'the recruiting quarters of the U. S. Army in Augusta, GA' However, soon he applied for a discharge for reasons outlined in the book. The War Department granted his discharge request. That was in 1890—pp. 49-51."

I have known Dr. Doug Beacham for many years. He was the pastor of Franklin Springs P. H. Church while I was pastor at Tarkenton Memorial P. H. Church in Athens. We both served on the Georgia Conference Board. Doug was the assistant conference superintendent, and I was the secretary/treasurer. Then, Doug was elected as our conference superintendent, and the rest is history. During those years, Doug faithfully served as an Army Reserve chaplain, while I served as an Air Force Reserve chaplain.

On Friday, July 20, 2012, at the Hilton Orlando Hotel on Destination Parkway, in Orlando, FL, Presiding Bishop Ronald W. Carpenter, Sr. installed Bishop A. D. "Doug" Beacham, Jr. as our 19th Presiding Bishop.

Bishop Carpenter, Sr. resigned as our general superintendent because of health issues that prevented him from fulfilling his obligations and responsibilities as our general superintendent. He and Nan had moved to Greenville, SC, where they were in their new home.Shortly after the installation service for Bishop Doug Beacham in Orlando, Bishop Ronald W. Carpenter, Sr., took a turn for the worst and died. Many of us were privileged to attend his memorial service at his son's mega church in Greenville. Let us continue to pray for Bishop Carpenter's wife, Nan Hale Carpenter and her family.

So, without further delay let me now share the record of Bishop Doug Beacham's military service in the United States Army Reserve:

Commissioned 28 Nov 1977 as a 1LT. Promoted to Captain 15 Sept 1979. Promoted to Major 14 Sept 1987. Promoted to LTC 14 Sept 1994 and retired as LTC (Lieutenant Colonel) in fall, 2001 following election as Executive Director of then IPHC Church Education Ministries (now Discipleship Ministries) upon moving to Oklahoma City, OK

On 20 February 1978 Doug began serving as chaplain of the 357th Supply and Service Battalion, USAR, Athens, GA.

Chaplain, 3297th US Army Hospital, USAR, Chamblee, GA.

Chaplain, 449th Area Support Group, USAR, Fort Gilliam, Forest Park, GA.

Chaplain, 359th Signal Brigade, USAR, Fort Gordon, GA

Doug says he was encouraged to join the Army Reserve during his last year in seminary by his brother-in-law, Chaplain (COL) Lou Shirey, Jr. He had not thought about it until Lou mentioned it and he is so glad he listened to him. Now, Doug and Lou are working together in the General Superintendent's Office with Lou Shirey as the IPHC WIN and Clergy Development Director.

Doug also served with Chaplain (COL) Rodney Callahan at the 449th Area Support Group and served together at the 3297th US Army Hospital. He was Doug's senior chaplain and helped him immensely.

Chaplain Doug Beacham was blessed to serve with many leaders and learned so much from them in the Army. Today, Doug continues to be in regular contact and communications with former commanders, many of whom earned one or more stars as generals in the US Army Reserve. Doug said he, also, served with outstanding enlisted personnel and non-commissioned officers who did much to help him be effective as a chaplain.

As a Reserve chaplain, Doug Beacham served at least two weeks of summer camp during these years. He especially remembers a two-week tour serving as a chaplain at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC, and a three-week tour serving during a REFORGER exercise in Holland (Return of Forces to Germany).

Chaplain Beacham graduated from the US Army Chaplain Officer Basic Leadership Course at Fort Wadsworth and Fort Hamilton, New York (1978); the Reserve Chaplain's Advanced Course at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey; and the Reserve Chaplain's Command and General Staff College at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. His CGSC paper was a study of preaching by US Army chaplains who served in the Middle East war zone during the first Gulf War of 1990, 1991. These Army schools taught Doug much about organizations, leadership, and staff work, that has had a significant impact in his ministry.

Doug went on to say in responding to my appeal for his ministry as an Army Reserve chaplain, "I should add that I am very thankful that Emmanuel College, the Franklin Springs PHC, and the Georgia Conference all encouraged me in this ministry and saw it as an extension of their service to people."

"By the way, I was born in Norfolk, Virginia and lived there until I was 13 (1962) when we moved to Franklin Springs when denominational headquarters was established there. Daddy was elected General Treasurer in the 1961 General Conference. I graduated from Franklin County High School, Carnesville, GA in 1967; Emmanuel College in 1969 (A.A., General Education); the University of Georgia (B.A. History, 1972); Union Theological Seminary (now Union Presbyterian Seminary), Richmond, VA, M.Div., 1975; UTS, Th.M., Biblical Studies, 1976; UTS, D.Min., 1977. I was privileged to study with such scholars as Dr. John Bright, Dr. Paul Achtemeier, Dr. Patrick Miller, Dr. John Leith, Dr. Donald Dawe, Dr. Mattias Rissi, and others. While at Emmanuel Rev. John Swails, Dr. Vinson Synan and the late Ms. Bea Coley had profound impacts on my life educationally and spiritually."

"While living in Richmond at UTS I was associate pastor of the Ray of Hope PHC, Rev. Carl Campbell, senior pastor. Carl taught me so much during the five years I served with him and the good people of that church.

"I taught at Emmanuel College from 1977-1982; pastor, Franklin Springs PHC 1982-1994; Georgia Conference Superintendent, 1994-2001; IPHC CEM Executive Director, 2001-2005; IPHC World Missions Director, 2005-2012.

"Susan is the former Susan Reed from Greenwood, SC. She graduated from Emmanuel College, the University of Georgia School of Pharmacy. She is Director of Pharmacy, Radiology, Respiratory Therapy, and Laboratory Services at Oklahoma Heart Hospital, Oklahoma City, OK.

"Our daughter Beth Beacham White, is a graduate of Emmanuel College, the Catholic University School of Law (Washington, DC). She is currently an attorney at the Federal Election Commission in Washington, DC. She has served as Chief Counsel of the National Republican Congressional Committee in DC. Her husband is Master-Sergeant Kenneth White with the US Army.

"Our son Douglas is a graduate of Emmanuel College and Oklahoma State University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Tulsa, OK. He completed his residency in anesthesia in June, 2012 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington, KY. He is currently in a one year fellowship in pain management at UK in Lexington. His wife is the former Kellie Floyd from near Lake City, SC. She is a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a B.A. in nursing. Currently she is a pharmaceutical representative. Douglas and Kellie have our one grandchild, Caroline Catherine Beacham, who will be three years old in October."

Let me now add one extra nugget of information. I asked Doug for it, i. e. "How old are you?" And he gave it to me. Here is what he wrote: "I was born 23 January 1949, a Sunday afternoon. My sister Kathy followed and then Van."

That makes our new Presiding Bishop 64 years of age.

Let us pray for Doug and Susan. We want them to do well, and to be led by the Holy Spirit, the Word of God, and in communication with God in prayer. They will need close friends and the wise advice and counsel of the Council of Bishops as they serve our church until General Conference in July 2013. Of course, Doug could be re-elected at that general conference to serve a full term as our general superintendent which is only a few weeks away.

My family and I, Melvine, Greg and Stephanie were privileged to be present for the installation service for Doug Beacham on Friday evening, July 20, 2012, at 7 o'clock at the Hilton Orlando Hotel in Orlando, FL. Many of you were able to view that historic event via live streaming on the Internet. Check with our IPHC website: www.iphc.org

The first night of this annual event was well attended. I did not get an actual count but I can say it was a lively congregation of God's people eager and ready to worship and to hear the preaching of the Word.
Bishop Mike Gray is the superintendent of the Alpha Conference (Alabama). Conquest, a singing and musical group from Emmanuel College provided the music and it was lively.
The ladies will be meeting for a Women's Ministries luncheon in the Fellowship Hall of the Franklin Springs P. H. Church from 1 to 3 p. m. and the men will have a Men's Ministries Cook out on the Quad of Emmanuel College.

Bishop Mike Gray will be preaching once again on Friday evening.

The conference will be in session once again on Saturday June 15, in the Swails Center.

[Editor's addendum: Melvine, Greg, and I attended the Thursday night camp meeting service. It appeared to me that we had an influx of new people and the congregation grew from Wednesday night. There is a spirit of excitement and expectation that God is not only present, but willing to meet the needs of His people.

Conquest, the singing and musical group from Emmanuel College, did a superb job in leading us in singing and worship. The young lady who leads them works in recruitment and the admissions office. What amazed me is that she said she has had about 20 years experience on church staffs. She plays the guitar and sings--and gives it all she's got. She has what I call Spizzerinctum--vim, vitality, energy, stamina, determination, dedication, enthusiasm, perseverance and much more. I counted 11 persons involved in the music of the camp meeting.

Bishop Mike Gray was more dramatic than the night before. He preached on 5 elements or stages in transition. He used David as an example, and made appropriate applications.

When he gave the altar call, the altar area was filled with people. What blesses me so is that we are having a lot of young people as well as the older folks we have depended on year after year.

Mike Gray served for a brief period of time as my associate pastor when I pastored Good Shepherd Pentecostal Holiness Church in Birmingham, AL, prior to coming to Athens, GA, to be the senior pastor of Tarkenton Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church, now known as Christian Life Worship Center. Here is a photo of us [please not how young I was with dark hair and trim and lean:

Leggett, president of Holmes Bible College was present. He brought greetings from the college and shared briefly what God is doing on that campus, and offered a powerful prayer that was saturated with the Scripture. When he prays, Leggett brings heaven down and the glory of God envelops the place of worship.

For those who might like to invest in Holmes Bible College, Bishop Leggett said they need approximately $20,000 to completely pay for one of the new buildings. They are building a new campus for the future. The new Homes Memorial Church is being built. They need students for the college, and if you know of any one who would like to attend a Bible college please let them know that now is the time to contact the school and get enrolled for the fall semester. As an alumnus and former member of the Board of Trustees of Holmes Bible College, I highly recommend this Bible school. It is the oldest Bible college in the known world in continuous service to students.

In the most recent newsletter from Holmes Bible College I copy and paste this appeal for enrollment:
[Editor's comment: I have known Bill Cox for many years. He was present in the Wednesday night Camp Meeting service in Franklin Springs on the campus of Emmanuel College. Bill's wife, Gale Richardson Cox, is a sister to Ruth Richardson Chassevent who is married to George Chassevent. George and Ruth Chassevent are active members and leaders of our church in Athens, GA. I followed Paul Hopkins in June of 1986 as the senior pastor of Tarkenton Memorial Church. Ruth served as my secretary and office manager for several years, and George was a deacon and a Sunday school teacher.

George and Ruth Chassevent live only 6 miles from our home on a lovely farm. Their annual gardens are a thing of beauty as well as fruitful harvests that bless not only their family, but neighbors and friends. George is retired from IBM and in my opinion he is a genius as well as a prince of a man, and a genuine Christian and a man of humility who has a great desire to serve others.

Following the General Conference in July 2009, Presiding Bishop Ronald W. Carpenter, Sr., gave a good word about the value of Hugh's News in communications to the members of the Board of Trustees of Emmanuel College in October during the Feast of Ingathering. Bill told me about what Bishop Carpenter had said, and offered to help me with a new website and newsletter design for Hugh's News.

After several meetings with Mel Tinney who became my webmaster, and Seth Cain who designed the website and newsletter, I signed a contractual agreement with Bill Cox, CEO of Martus Solutions, and God has blessed this non-profit business venture resulting in quantum leap in subscribers and readers in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, and around the world. It has been a win/win enterprise with the blessings of Almighty God.

As the Founder, Editor, and CEO of Hugh's News, Inc. I am pleased as well as delighted with my relationship with Bill Cox, Mel Tinney, and Seth Cain. Mel has moved to Pepin, Wisconsin, and continues to render invaluable service to me almost daily by sizing all the photos, offering solutions to presenting problems, and providing professional advice and guidance.

I strongly recommend that you consider this offer Bill Cox is making to IPHC churches.]

Your contribution to Hugh's News sets in motion a miracle of communications

<itunes:author>Hugh Morgan</itunes:author>

Who would have ever believed when we started Hugh's News 16 years ago, we would still be in existence today reaching a reading audience of over 6,000 people throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, and all around the world.

I like the prophecy in the Book of Malachi with regard to fathers:

Malachi 4:5-6
"I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse."
NIV

That same theme is picked up on the life of John the Baptist in the Gospel of Luke:

Luke 1:16-17
And he (John the Baptist) will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, 'to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,' and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
NKJV

Then, I remember a year ago in June 2012, we had a father and son supper in our fellowship hall in our church in Athens, GA (Christian Life Worship Center). Greg, my son, and I attended and were blessed by what we heard and experienced. Our men deep fried chicken wings and chicken fingers. We had Cole slaw, potato salad, and Marconi and cheese with bread. For desert we had peach pie and key lime pie.

Rick Womack, the administrative assistant to our conference bishop, Bill Jones, and his son, Josh, spoke to us about fathers. (Note: Rick Womack has recently accepted the call from the Mountain Gap Pentecostal Holiness Church to be their pastor). Josh spoke out of his heart about what he and other young men need from their fathers. I was greatly amazed at the maturity of Josh and his ability to speak out of his heart and share his intimate relationship with his father.

Then, Rick shared how God was teaching him how to be a good father, and disciple his son. Rick said, "It is never too late to begin to be the father to you son God wants you to be."

There is hope for all of us who often fail to live up to the high ideals we have for our relationships with our sons. I know I was challenged by what I heard that Saturday evening a year ago.

As I write this blog on Sunday evening, June 9, 2013, my son, Greg Morgan, should have landed in Atlanta from the missions trip he, our pastor, and two other men made to Uganda. I eagerly await to sit and listen to Greg tell Melvine and me about his trip, the ministry God gave to him and the team, and what God is speaking in his life. It's amazing how much I missed him in such a short time.

God is doing a new thing as we come down to the end of this age. He is turning the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers. We can trust God and His Word to see us through these days of change, uncertainty, and new and exciting ventures for the Kingdom of God. Our God is the God Who never quits, and His grace, love, and mercy are available as we seek His face.

Let us commit ourselves to starting all over again, and learn to listen to the needs of our sons as well as daughters. Listening is a key factor in hearing the heart of our children.

May God help you and me to be a godly father to our sons and daughters. God is for us.
Text: Edward Mote, 1797-1874
Music: William B. Bradbury, 1816-1868
Tune: THE SOLID ROCK

1. My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus' blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
but wholly lean on Jesus' name.

Refrain:
On Christ the solid rock I stand,
all other ground is sinking sand;
all other ground is sinking sand.

2. When Darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale,
my anchor holds within the veil.
(Refrain)

3. His oath, His covenant, His blood
supports me in the whelming flood.
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.
(Refrain)

4. When He shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in Him be found!
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
faultless to stand before the throne!
(Refrain)

Lighten up with Laughter

<itunes:author>Hugh Morgan</itunes:author>

Since I had no joke to share today, I thought I would share some thoughtful sayings:

The church is located at 125 Kathwood Drive, Athens, GA 30607. It is located one mile west of the Athens Perimeter just off US Highway 129 (Jefferson Highway). The telephone is: 706-353-1978.

Sunday school begins at 10 a. m. Morning worship begins at 10:50 a. m. Let me invite you to attend the adult Sunday school class taught by Lavon and Arlette Revells. We meet in the fellowship hall on the lower level of the church. Coffee and donuts are served. Once you come, you'll want to come back again. Melvine, Greg, and I love the class. Great things are happening in our class, prayers are being answered, and people are healed.

The Rev. Mr. Lawrence Johnson, a favored son of our church, will be our guest preacher in the absence of our pastor, the Rev. Mr. J. Brian Williams, who will be flying back from a mission's trip to Uganda. A team of four men were on this trip. God gave them favor and success. Many souls were saved.

Lawrence Johnson grew up in Athens, GA, and in our church. It was called the First Pentecostal Holiness Church. The parents of Lawrence were Oliver and Mattie Mae Anthony Johnson. They were known for their hospitality and keeping visiting ministers in their home. When Oral Roberts conducted a revival in the church when he pastored the P. H. Church in Toccoa, GA, Oral, Evelyn, and Rebecca Roberts stayed in their home. I have seen the photo of them many times when I would visit Mattie Mae Johnson when I was the pastor. That was a treasured photo Mattie Mae enjoyed showing her visitors. She kept it in the Bible she read daily.

Lawrence has a younger sister, Rebecca Joyce Johnson Burnette. She was named after Rebecca Roberts. Joyce, the name we call her, has been in the nursing profession for many years, but now has retired. She is a good resource person to contact when you have a medical problem. She is a good cook, too. She is married to Austin Burnette and they reside in Winterville, GA. Austin is one of my best friends. He is a good mechanic and has helped me many times when I had automobile problems. He retired a few years ago as an environmental engineer from the University of Georgia. When I visit in their home, Joyce always has a glass of cold ice tea. They are the kind of people you can always count on when any need arises.

Lawrence Johnson is married to the former Miss Carol Moore of Hartwell, GA. They currently reside in Anderson, SC. I have known them for many years, in fact, I met Carol when I was a student at Emmanuel College in 1952. They are a dedicated and talented couple who have invested their lives in ministry in the Georgia and Upper South Carolina Conferences. Lawrence was the Valedictorian of his graduation class from Clark Central High School. He attended Holmes Bible College for one year and then, transferred to Emmanuel College where he graduated from the Junior College with high honors (Valedictorian of his graduating class). From Emmanuel College he transferred to the University of Georgia where once again he graduated with high honors in the top echelon of his class.

Lawrence served as the pastor of several churches in Georgia, and was the pastor of the Hartwell Pentecostal Holiness Church when they built the new church sanctuary and Sunday school classrooms. He served as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Georgia Conference. He pastored the South Greenwood Pentecostal Holiness Church, as well as Calhoun Falls P. H. Church. He is in much demand as a preacher, and has filled in as an interim pastor for several churches in recent years. I remember that he filled in for several weeks at Holmes Memorial Church when the pastor was sick. He served on the Upper South Carolina Conference Board as their evangelism and world missions director.

You will enjoy and greatly benefit by coming to our church this Sunday, June 9, to hear Lawrence Johnson preach. He is a man of sterling character, dedicated, faithful and full of the Holy Spirit. He is a good story-teller, and is a lot of fun to be with. I laugh a lot when I am in his presence. He brings out the best in others he meets.
Mr. O. N. Todd, Jr. He organized and developed a choir, a ladies' sextet, and a men's quartet, an orchestra, as well as other groups.

One of the most moving songs that I remember was a song the Ladies Sextext used to sing, "Zion's Hill." Invariably, every time they sang it, the sweet presence and anointing of the Holy Spirit would engulf the congregation and the people would praise and shout and give glory to God. I can feel that Spirit now as I write these words, and the wonderful memories linger on in my heart.

Let me give you the names of the ladies who sang in that sextet: Inez Gorman, Nelle Jo Hewitt, Pauline Kuykendall, Cody Smith, Naomi Barr, and Lois Todd. They were good enough to sing on the Lawrence Welk Show.

Therefore, I believe it is fitting to share the lyrics of that song for you to read, and hopefully sing:

"Zion's Hill"

There waits for me a glad tomorrow,
Where gates of pearl swing open wide,
And when I've passed this vale of sorrow,
I'll dwell upon the other side.

Chorus:
Some day beyond the reach of mortal ken,
Some day God only knows just where and when
The wheels of mortal life shall all stand still
And I shall go to dwell on Zion's hill.

Some day I'll hear the angels singing,
Beyond the shadows of the tomb;
And all the bells of heaven ringing,
While saints are singing, "Home, sweet home."

Some day my labors will be ended,
And all my wand'rings will be o'er,
And all earth's broken ties be mended,
And I shall sigh and weep no more.

Some day the dark clouds will be rifted,
And all the night of gloom be past;
And all life's burdens will be lifted,
The day of rest shall dawn at last.

[Editor's comment: I sense that the coming of Jesus is now very near. It's time for America, and the nations of the world to wake up. This is a time for repentance, a time to change our thinking and turn to God, and place our trust in Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the only way to God. Here is what Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6, NIV).

Do you know Him? Have you repented, confessed your sins, and received Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord?

The Apostle Paul wrote these words about how to be saved, to be born again, to receive eternal life:

Romans 10:8-11
"The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame."
NIV

Now is the time. Don't delay. Invite Jesus into your heart and life this very moment.

Then, tell someone. Tell you mother, your father, your loved ones, and friends.

For those who publish good tidings of peace and salvation, their feet are called beautiful.

Hear what Isaiah wrote:

Isaiah 52:7
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!
KJV

Mountains speak to us of things eternal and bring us closer to God. It is when we face mountains of difficulty that we take our eyes off the problem and look to God Who alone provides for all our needs.

I am keenly aware that Almighty God, the Creator of this universe, the Author of man's conscience, and the Architect of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, has made it all possible. I am overwhelmed and made humble to think that God called me and gave authority and ability to write, organize, and publish this electronic newsletter. I have not done it alone. It has taken a team of people to get us to where we are today, and you have been a vital part of that process.

Equally, I am grateful to God for you my readers who allow me to come into your homes, places of business, recreational areas, or wherever you might be on land, sea or in the air with Hugh's News.

Only God can create within you a desire to give to this ministry. Whatever we accomplish in presenting the Gospel of Jesus Christ through this newsletter, it is due in large part by you generosity in giving of your prayers and financial support.

This is June, and the summer months are now upon us. We do not need to experience a summer slump. God wants every need to be met in paying our bills on time to publish this newsletter.

[Editor's comment: I have known Bill Cox for many years. Bill's wife, Gale Richardson Cox, is a sister to Ruth Richardson Chassevent who is married to George Chassevent. They are active members and leaders of our church in Athens, GA. I followed Paul Hopkins in June of 1986 as the senior pastor of Tarkenton Memorial Church. Ruth served as my secretary and office manager for several years, and George was a deacon. George and Ruth Chassevent live only 6 miles from our home on a lovely farm. Their annual gardens are a thing of beauty as well as fruitful harvests that bless not only their family, but neighbors and friends. George is retired from IBM and in my opinion he is a genius and a prince of a man, and a genuine Christian.

Lyrics: John H. Sammis
Music: Daniel B. Towner

When we walk with the Lord
In the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way;
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Chorus:

Trust and obey,
For there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
But to trust and obey.

Not a shadow can rise,
Not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear,
Not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear,
Not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss,
Not a frown or a cross,
But is blest if we trust and obey.

But we never can prove
The delights of His love,
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows,
And the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

Then in fellowship sweet
We will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do;
Where He sends, we will go,
Never fear, only trust and obey.

Will You receive the Bendiction?

<itunes:author>Hugh Morgan</itunes:author>

Ephesians 3:20-21
Since she had to go to work the next day, she told the repairman, "I'll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter, and I'll mail you a check."

"Oh, by the way don't worry about my bulldog Spike. He won't bother you. But, whatever you do, do NOT, under ANY circumstances, talk to my parrot!" "I REPEAT, DO NOT TALK TO MY PARROT!!!"

When the repairman arrived at Wanda's apartment the following day, he discovered the biggest, meanest looking bulldog he has ever seen. But, just as she had said, the dog just lay there on the carpet watching the repairman go about his work.

The parrot, however, drove him nuts the whole time with his incessant yelling, cursing and name calling. Finally the repairman couldn't contain himself any longer and yelled, "Shut up, you stupid, ugly bird!"

To which the parrot replied, "Get him, Spike!"

Quote for Today on Prayer

<itunes:author>Hugh Morgan</itunes:author>

In prayer it is better to have a heart without words than words without a heart.
