Dr. Vinson Synan, renown historian of the fastest growing segment of Christianity–the Pentecostal/Charismatic–is on campus speaking in several classes today, Wednesday, September 8, 2010, and will speak in the School of Christian Ministries Chapel Thursday, September 9, 2010, at 10 a. m., in Taylor Auditorium.

Dr. Synan has published 17 books about the global dimensions of this movement of some 5 million Protestant, Catholics and Orthodox Christians (1 in 4 Christians according to a Barna survey). Dr. Synan’s work has involved bringing together Pentecostals/Charismatics from various denominations and regions of the world in ecumenical worship and ministry, such as the International Conference on the Holy Spirit in 1987 at the New Orleans Superdome.

Synan taught history at Emmanuel College and once served as the Director of the Holy Spirit Research Center at Oral Roberts University. He also served as General Secretary of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, as well as an Assistant General Superintendent. He served as the Interim President of Southwestern College (now Southwestern Christian University), and retired Dean, School of Divinity, Regent University. He is the leading IPHC Church historian, as well as the Charismatic/Pentecostal world. He is a prolific writer. His latest book, Eyewitness Remembers the Century of the Holy Spirit., is a book every Pentecostal should have in his/her home.

[Editor's Note: I am grateful to Dr. Michael Stewart, president of Emmanuel College, for this news article. If you live in northeast Georgia may I encourage you to hear Dr. Synan today at Emmanuel College.]

Bethany, OK–Undergraduate enrollment growth of 3% to 6% normally reflects acceptable or even significant university growth. However, Southwestern Christian University in Bethany recently announced a Fall, 2010 undergraduate enrollment increase of 66% compared to the 2009 Fall semester. This growth, coupled with 100% dormitory occupancy, makes 2010 a year of unprecedented increase for the fast-growing, private university located on old Highway 66 in Bethany.

“A convergence of several factors has led to a significant pattern of growth,” said Dr. Ed Huckeby, SCU’s recently inaugurated new president. “We are teaching students at an additional location in the Tulsa area, and have created more scholarship opportunities through our NAIA membership, and have ‘ramped up’ our academic recruiting efforts to attract the best and brightest from around the country…and around the world,” he added, noting that international students account for 5.2% of the total undergraduate population.

A total of 29 degree options are now available at SCU, including 5 masters degree concentrations. “This is almost double the number of options a year ago,” Huckeby stressed. “We are focusing on overcoming the perception that SCU is strictly a ‘Bible school.’ Almost a decade ago, the SCU Board of Regents initiated a plan for the institution to become a full-fledged liberal arts university. Currently, our largest enrollment is in business administration and we recently added sport management as a degree option. So, in addition to the outstanding options in our Department of Theology and Missions, we are succeeding in providing other degree choices which make SCU appealing to a variety of students with a broad base of career interests.” According to Huckeby, these are factors which have influenced the significant enrollment increases this fall.

Southwestern will be exploring new housing options as well as other campus expansion plans to accommodate anticipated growth in the near future. Additionally, SCU is moving rapidly into the online education arena. “We see no reason these growth trends will not continue for the next several years. Students and their parents are seeking Christian alternatives in higher education, and SCU, as a small, private higher education institution, happens to be one of the best and most affordable options available in this region,” Huckeby added. In an effort to remain one of the most affordable options, SCU chose not to raise undergraduate tuition and fee rates for the 2010-2011 academic year. “It is our goal to provide SCU students every opportunity to graduate with as little student debt as possible,” Huckeby added. “We cannot control the economy, but we can control our reaction to it.”
Goetz was killed in action in Afghanistan on August 30, 2010 while serving as the Battalion Chaplain for 1-66th Armor Battalion, 4th Infantry Division. Dale was one of five Soldiers killed by an Improvised Explosive Device while traveling in a convoy near Kandahar Province. Chaplain Goetz is survived by his wife, Christy, and by their three sons--Landon, Caleb and Joel.

Chaplain Goetz is the first military chaplain killed in action in Iraq or Afghanistan. Dale was a selfless servant of God, a devoted husband and father, a strong American patriot, and a compassionate spiritual leader whose love for Soldiers was only surpassed by his firm commitment to living his calling as a United States Army Chaplain.

Chaplain (Major General) Douglass Carver, Chief of Army Chaplains wrote, "Please join with me in prayer for Christy, Landon, Caleb and Joel as we mourn with them in the loss of Dale, our fellow Soldier and Unit Ministry Team member. Let us also strive to honor Dale's sacrifice with a continuing bold commitment to ensure the finest religious support and pastoral care possible for our beloved Soldiers and their Families.
"May God bless the Goetz Family and the Families of all our Fallen Soldiers; and, may God bless our Army and the United States of America."

[Editor's Note: I found out that Chaplain Dale Goetz was an ordained minister of the American Council of Christian Churches.
Dr. Daniel Thomas Sheaffer, 80, was joyously greeted in Heaven Thursday, September 2, 2010 at 1:05 p.m. by many thousands of souls who came to know Jesus Christ through his amazing 64-year ministry around the world.

He was born November 29, 1929 in OKC, OK to Rev. Gerald and Jeanette Sheaffer. Dr. Sheaffer graduated from Capitol Hill High School, where he played basketball on the 1947 state runner-up team and was high-point man in three games that year. He was also the top player on the tennis team and won the state singles championship. He held degrees from Oklahoma City Southwestern College, Oklahoma City University, East Central State University, Tulsa University, Luther Rice Seminary, and Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

Dr. Sheaffer's preaching ministry began at the age of 17. When he didn't have a church to preach in, he would preach on the street corners or use school facilities to hold revivals. He married his true love and life-long partner, Bonnie Rose Benson, in 1950, and together they pursued a very successful nationwide evangelistic ministry. Later they settled into their true calling and pastored several churches in Oklahoma. This is when he acquired the name by which he will forever be known, "Pastor Sheaffer."

Dan and Bonnie Sheaffer became pastors of First Assembly of God in OKC in 1969 with a congregation of 42 members. By 1972, a 1,250 seat auditorium had been built and outgrown, and then in 1979, Dr. Sheaffer led his congregation in building a new church complex that he named Crossroads Cathedral. This structure contained more than 200,000 square feet with a sanctuary seating 6,000 people. This edifice was built debt-free. Thousands became members as the church grew rapidly in attendance. For 37 years, people accepted Jesus Christ as Savior in nearly every service.

Pastor Sheaffer and Bonnie hosted the popular Trinity Broadcasting Network program, "The Answer," for 17 years and were frequent hosts and guests of TBN's "Praise the Lord" program. He was the author of two books of Bible questions and answers and a church growth book entitled, Together We Grow.

In 1964, Pastor Sheaffer and Bonnie began their extraordinary leadership in missionary work overseas. To help fund the costs of missionary trips, Dan began a very successful homebuilding and general contracting business to supplement his pastoral income. The Sheaffers founded and built churches in Liberia, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Paraguay, Colombia, Jamaica, Chile, Malawi, Burundi and others. After trying retirement for a short time in 2007, Dr. Sheaffer said, "I was called to preach!" and, along with Bonnie, founded Harvest Assembly of God Church. Above all, Pastor Sheaffer loved his Harvest A/G church family! Space does not permit a recounting of all the unparalleled accomplishments for the Kingdom of God this man achieved during his 80 years. A man of remarkable character and knowledge, Dan was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, whose legacy will live on in the hearts he touched. Although we will deeply miss his presence here on earth, we rejoice in knowing he now receives his eternal blessing in Heaven.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eugene; and sister, Mary Ellen Felton. He leaves behind his loving wife of 60 years, Bonnie Sheaffer, of the home; daughter, Terri and husband, Gary King; son, Mike and wife, Starla; sister, Carolyn and husband, Dr. Harold Brooks; brother, Charles and wife, Phyllis; 5 Grandchildren; 6 Great-Grandchildren; and countless other loving family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either of the two organizations he founded to fund his worldwide missionary vision into perpetuity: Harvest Ministries, or Discipling the Nations, c/o Harvest A/G, PO Box 892345, OKC, OK 73189.

Viewing will be 4-8 p. m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at Vondel Smith Mortuary at South Lakes, with the family greeting friends from 5-8.

Services to celebrate his life will be 10 AM, Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at Harvest Assembly of God Church, 4019 S. Pennsylvania. Interment will follow at Resthaven.

Thanks to Marcus Light who reported that bit of news in his comment on my announcement of the death of Pastor Shaeffer. While I was president of Southwestern College, now Southwestern Christian University, I hired Dan T. Muse, Jr., and Scott Muse, Jr. to work for me in the college. Sheaffer when I was living in Oklahoma City.]
This survey is very helpful, both because it employs more reliable methodology to achieve its results than have previous pro-repeal surveys and because it rebuffs the alleged overwhelming support for repeal. If you want to write your Senators, this is a good resource to cite, since it shows that likely voters would tend to vote against a Senator who supports DADT repeal.

Speaking of Senators, Senator John McCain recently stood up for the military and slowed down efforts in the Senate to railroad the repeal bill through.

Oil continues to gush in catastrophic waves in the Gulf of Mexico. Arizona has been called by some a rogue state. The Senate Armed Forces Committee will vote on whether to repeal the "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Law." This last issue directly affects our military chaplains and I know that it is keenly on their minds. Some have told me that if practicing homosexuals are allowed to join the military that they will resign their commission. Certainly there may be times when it is a must that resignation of a commission is called for, but not now.

A shepherd does not desert his/her sheep when the wolves attack. Yes, it is tough, but the Scriptures do clearly point out that we are engaged in a battle for the souls and minds of men and women and this is just part of that eternal war. And each one of us must stay in the fight.

I have had the privilege over the past few years of singing in a southern Gospel quartet. One of our latest songs is an old composition entitled, “His Grace is Sufficient for Me.” The second stanza has meant a
great deal to me as I wrestle with worry over some of the issues stated above:

"When the Temptor brings confusion, and I don’t know what to do,
On my knees I turn to Jesus, for He’ll always see me through.
Then despair is changed to victory, every doubt just melts away,
And in Him there is hope for every day."

Those, my friends, are ageless words of hope to reaffirm each and every day. Times are tough, but the promise of Jesus still stands the test of time: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20, NIV).

The Rev. Daniel T. Sheaffer, a longtime Oklahoma City pastor, died Thursday at age 81. Sheaffer was the founding pastor of Crossroads Cathedral, which was one of the first megachurches in the Oklahoma City area.

At the time of his death, he was the pastor of Harvest Assembly of God, 4109 S. Pennsylvania.

He became pastor of what was then the First Assembly of God Church of Oklahoma City in 1969. In the late 1970s, construction began at the current site of what is now Crossroads Church at 8901 S. Shields Blvd. The sanctuary was dedicated in 1979, and with the move, the church became Crossroads Cathedral, noting its location at the crossroads of two major highways.

Sheaffer preached integration of churches, and against the sin of racism.

"The church ought to be a microcosm of what heaven is going to be like," Sheaffer told The Oklahoman in 2002. "And I know that when we get to heaven, God's not going to say, 'Now all you black Christians, you go to the northeast; rich white Christians, you go northwest; and everybody else, go south."

According to The Oklahoman archives, Crossroads Cathedral was the first Assembly of God church in the United States to give more than $1 million to foreign missions in a single year. Mountain Movers magazine in 1994 showed that Crossroads members gave $1,007,094 to missions during 1993.

Sheaffer and his wife Bonnie previously hosted a television program on TBN, called "The Answer," in which he answered viewers' questions about the Bible.

[Editor's Note: It was my pleasure to meet Dan Sheaffer in 1975 when I became president of Southwestern College, now Southwestern Christian University. I found out that he had once been an ordained minister in the IPHC, and his father was an IPHC pastor as well. He attended Southwestern College when Dr. R. O. Corvin was the president. I wanted to honor this outstanding man of God who is one of us. May God bless the memory of this great servant of the Lord Jesus Christ.]
The fall class of 2010 is no different than other classes in its arrival, but drastically different in its impact to the future of SCU.

The 2010-2011 academic year promises to be a new and uncharted territory for the administration, faculty and staff of Southwestern. In addition to the recent WOW (week of welcome) event, the "WOW" factor is taking effect across the campus as well. While most colleges and universities see an average annual increase of 3-5% in enrollment, Southwestern Christian University is elated to announce that undergraduate enrollment is up 66% from only one year ago. Along with the increase of students in the classroom, a similar increase has taken shape in resident occupancy. Both residence halls are currently at 100% occupancy which is the result of a 92% increase in student residents from one year ago. The administration is crediting these exciting improvements to a number of recent changes including the addition of the SCU offerings in the Tulsa metro, the addition of new degree programs, the addition of sporting programs, the athletic program making the transition to the NAIA and the completion of multiple campus renovations and maintenance enhancements. "These are exciting times at Southwestern and this is only the beginning of what is to come. We will continue to do everything we can to promote the mission of the institution so students can impact their world for Jesus Christ", said Dr. Ed Huckeby, SCU President.

With Southwestern Christian University posting its largest undergraduate student populations since 1980, the administration is faced with a multitude of what they are calling, "good problems to have." "With the influx of students coming onto campus, we are faced with parking issues, full dormitories and other logistical adjustments; however, we are facing these situations head on and could not be more excited to be dealing with them," Huckeby added.

This year's 2010 SCU Alumni & Friends Weekend is themed, "An Epic Adventure." During the alumni banquet/Feast of Ingathering, we will "unveil" the future plans for SCU using the theme of embarking on an epic adventure. We will also be having a special event on Saturday afternoon at 2 p. m. to honor the career of Charlotte Iaquinta. The actual invitations will go out about 5 weeks prior to the event.

A United States Marine was taking some college courses between assignments. He had completed 20 missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of the courses had a professor who was an avowed atheist, and a member of the ACLU.

One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, "GOD, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform...I'll give you exactly 15 minutes." The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, "Here I am GOD, I'm still waiting."

It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him; knocking him off the platform.

The professor was out cold.

The Marine went back to his seat and sat there, silently.

The other students were shocked and stunned, and sat there looking on in silence. The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, "What in the world is the matter with you?
Why did you do that?"

The Marine calmly replied, "GOD was too busy today protecting America 's soldiers who are protecting your right to say stupid stuff and act like an idiot. So He sent me."

The classroom erupted in cheers!

Please join with me in prayer for Christy, Landon, Caleb and Joel as we mourn with them in the loss of Dale, our fellow Soldier and Unit Ministry Team member. Let us also strive to honor Dale's sacrifice with a continuing bold commitment to ensure the finest religious support and pastoral care possible for our beloved Soldiers and their Families.

It is amazing what God can do when He speaks to individuals about giving to a worthwhile project that will benefit our troops in Afghanistan.
There were 80 of us who graduated in 1950. However, 21 of my classmates are now deceased.

I had heard about the new campus that was built in 2008 at a cost of $74 million dollars. The school has a new name, Hewitt-Trussville High School. It is located at Deerfoot Parkway in Trussville. It looks like a major college or university campus with everything you would ever want in facilities. It is one of the premiere high schools in the nation.

The year I graduated our baseball team won the State High School Championship.

Hewitt-Trussville High School has turned out some outstanding athletes. Let me name a few:

Mike Mordecai, a right-handed hitting infielder in Major League Baseball who most recently played for the Florida Marlins.

Jay Barker, former quarterback for the University of Alabama Crimson Tide football team. Helped win the 1992 National Championship vs. Miami. Also started for the CFL team, the Toronto Argonauts. Married to country singer Sara Evans.

Brandon Cox, former quarterback for the Auburn Tigers football team.

My alma mater has turned out some outstanding pastors, evangelists, and missionaries. Let me name one that comes readliy to mind:

Mike Gray, the new Bishop and Superintendent of the Alpha (Alabama) Conference. I am so very proud of Mike.

The leadership of our 60th reunion asked me to write a memorial ceremony to honor our deceased classmates. I did so, and I think everyone appreciated the wording of the ceremony and the spirit in which it was presented. I read the ceremony. One of my classmates who was our high school queen in 1950, prepared the table with a white tablecloth with an empty chair. Other objects served as symbols of their lives: a red rose, a slice of lemon on a bread plate, a pinch of salt, the Bible, a wine glass turned upside down, a yellow ribbon and a lit candle.

Two of my classmates alternated in reading the names of our deceased classmates. We had a moment of silent prayer, and then I prayed this closing prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, we come to You in the strong Name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, Who is the Resurrection and the Life. We thank You for the life You have given to all of us.

In the face of the reality of death we acknowledge that our lives here on earth are for a brief moment of time. Help us to see death as You see it, not as the end, but as the beginning, not a wall but a doorway, not a dark road but a path that leads to eternal light and life.

We greatly miss those of our graduating class of 1950, but we thank You for the wonderful memories we have of them. May our minds and hearts be filled with the enduring recollections of the past as we commit them to You.

In the Name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, we pray. Amen.

I was deeply moved by conversations I was privileged to have with my classmates. Many of them have come to know Jesus Christ, and several have been baptized with the Holy Spirit. One of our finest athletes who played all sports was one of the best shortstops I have ever seen. He was recruited by the New York Yankees, but he made a wise decision to turn down a lucrative offer, and worked at American Cast Iron Pipe Company, and raised his family. Today, he has several children and grandchildren. I want to salute Hoyt Hale.

On Saturday morning, Melvine and I had brunch with two former deacons and their wives of our church in Birmingham, Good Shepherd Pentecostal Holiness Church. They are Lee and Laverne Airhart and Harold and Marie Kelley. Lee is retired from U. S. Pipe as one of their top executives. Harold retired from Sears as one of their top managers and supervisors. He is now an ordained minister at Metro Church of God in Riverchase, and is the director of pastoral care. He loves it. Harold is an exceptional cook and gardener. He made a quart of Pear Jam and gave it to us. He brought a smaller jar of the jam to the brunch, and I spread some of the jam on the pancakes I had ordered at Cracker Barrel. It was absolutely out of this world. It will make your tongue slap your tonsils, put diamonds in your smile, or glitter in your grin.

The wives of these two deacons, Laverne Airhart and Marie Kelley, are outstanding wives, mothers, grandmothers, and leaders. It is little wonder their husbands were successful. They both married up.

Saturday evening we had supper with Joyce McKay a faithful and loyal member of our church. She taught our children, Greg and Stephanie in Bible Quiz. That one ministry has made a great impact upon the spiritual life and character development of all who were in the Bible Quiz team.

On Friday evening, we dined with my oldest niece, Marsha McDuff Flurry. My sister, Mary Evelyn, was sick and could not join us. What a delight Marsha is. Every parent would love to have her as a daughter or daughter-in-law. She works for the Southern Company, the parent company of Alabama Power, Georgia Power, and Mississippi Power. She is the secretary for one of the officials of the company.

I am a blessed man. In October, my graduating class from Furman University in Greenville, SC, will have our 50th class reunion.
It is located at www.iphcexperience.com.

It is an awesome edition with lots of current news, photos, and information about reaching youth.

I discovered that by clicking on the Single Pages, you can download the magazine faster and with ease. Articles include: "How will we reach today's teens," "Seven Steps to a Youth Revolution," Emerging Voices--"Meet Stacy Hilliard."

Presiding Bishop Ronald W. Carpenter has an exciting article entitled, "The Gospel Really Works." In the article he carries out his theme or vision for the IPHC and that is "demonstration" of the Gospel. Youi will want to read this one for sure. He is an exciting writer as well as a preacher.

The executive editor of IPHC Experience, J. Lee Grady, gives us a lot of news about the church. For example, He lists the changes in conference leadership. The title is "Bishops Pass the Torch." Let me see if I can remember them: David Stephens, Ken Kingrea, Clifton Smith, James McKenzie, Ron Lawson, Ron Moore and Paul Clark.

There is a page on Faith Commitment with a number of photos of our missionaries and their families.

I was especially interested in the article, "Hawaii Church Launches Youth Outreach." It's about the ministry of Greg and Joan Hood at Life Church in Kailua, Hawaii. Melvine and I, along with Navy Chaplain Timothy Moore, his wife, Pam, and son, Joseph, attended a Sunday morning worship service when we were visiting in Hawaii with the Moores at Pearl Harbor a few months ago.

Then, there is a section on new books. One is by Kristen Dayle Scott Welch. The other is by Dr. David Hopkins.

Lee Grady is an exceptional writer. You will want to read his article entitled, "When God Requires Ricky Obedience."

The graphic and web design is first class.

Although I enjoy having a printed magazine, I find it easy to read it on the Internet. Either way, I like it. However, my choice is a printed magazine. That statement reveals that I am a chronologically gifted person who likes a printed page.

830 County Courthouse Prayer Rallies Organized for Nationwide Prayer on 9/11

Washington DC – America is poised to commemorate the 9th anniversary of 9/11, a day of unprecedented shock and suffering in the history of the United States. On this somber day the American flag will fly at half-mast, police and firefighters from around the country will gather at the International Association of Fallen Fire Fighter’s (IAFF) Memorial in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Americans will reflect on the horrific events of this day in our history and the Awakening America Alliance (www.awakeningamerica.us) will lay a wreath at the Pentagon and launch Cry Out America from this pivotal national monument.

Cry Out America, in conjunction with the Awakening America Alliance, will hold its third annual nationwide county courthouse prayer gatherings on 9/11 with over 830 county courthouse rallies currently organized and a potential for 16 million people to participate.

Billy Wilson, Executive Director of the Awakening America Alliance said, “This year we are once again calling for believers across America to gather at their county courthouse beginning at 12:00 noon on Saturday, September 11, 2010. Decisions affecting our national moral trajectory are taking place weekly in the courtroom. At these places of justice, we will bow before the true Judge of heaven and earth and plead for mercy despite our transgressions. We pray that 9/11 will once again be a day of prophetic communication as we issue a fresh wake up call to the American church and each community involved.”

In the first two years of Cry Out America the counties participating have more than doubled with at least one gathering in every state and in all 38 counties with populations over one million. Christian believers will congregate at their county courthouse from Hawaii to New York and Washington to Florida and claim this day of prayer to mark this significant day in its history with powerful prayer for every state, every county and every heart.

Holding the rallies on September 11, the anniversary of the devastating 2001 Islamic terror attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, "was not an easy choice," said Wilson. "There are many emotions around it. The attack was a physical wakeup call for the U.S. entering the 21st century, and it was one of the greatest days of prayer in American history. It is a good day to say to America, 'We need God's help.'"

Dr. Bob Bakke, US Producer of the Global Day of Prayer, Director of the National Prayer Advance, and an executive director of the Evangelical Free Church of America, stated that “in light of the urgent needs in the heart of Americans and their churches -- urban and suburban, rich and poor, young and old – the Awakening America Alliance (AAA) is pursuing what is vital and doing it the right way: commitment to Christ; united prayer across denominational, historical and demographic boundaries; authentic collaboration; clear, measurable goals; and events that foster movements toward a spiritual awakening. I canʼt think of anything more important,” he concluded.

The Awakening America Alliance was formed as an initiative with a broad coalition of nationally prominent Christian denominations, churches, para-church ministries, as well as Christian leaders and lay people from every walk of life. The purpose of the Alliance is to increase the awareness of the deep spiritual need in America and to pursue a fresh spiritual awakening that will impact the world.

I graduated from Hewitt High School in Trussville, AL, in May 1950. That was 60 years ago, and I don't feel like I am that old, although my chronological age is 77. I am not a senior citizen but a chronologically gifted person.

I think I was the youngest member of my class, and that tells me that all of my classmates will be older than me. There were 80 of us who graduated that year. Some 21 of our classmates have passed on to the next world, and I hope they were all Christians and are in heaven.

The leaders of my class who planned this 60th class reunion asked me to write a memorial ceremony to honor our deceased classmates. That document has been written and printed. We will use a table with various items on it to symbolize the lives and work of those who have departed this life. We will have a moment of silent prayer after all the names have been read by two members of our class after I read the ceremony. Then, I will offer a closing prayer which I have written as well for my class.

I was privileged to attend Woodlawn High School in Birmingham for three semesters. I played trombone in the 100 piece marching band. Bobby Bowden was our star football player. My father purchased a small farm in Clay (near Trussville) and we moved there. We lived on this farm the last two years of my high school days. In order to graduate with my class, I had to go to summer school at Phillips High School in Birmingham and take a couple of courses to earn the needed credits. Those were the days. I am grateful for my teachers and my classmates. We grew up in the best of times when we were taught Christian values and respect for others.

I look forward to seeing my classmates on Saturday afternoon. Hewitt-Trussville has a new high school and we will be given a tour of it.

I hope to visit with my sister, Mary Evelyn Morgan McDuff. Her husband, R. H. McDuff, is deceased. Mary Evelyn is 80 years old. She is far more intelligent than I am. She made all "A's" and was inducted into the National Honor Society. I love her and her family. Melvine and I hope to have supper with Mary Evelyn and her oldest daughter, Marsha McDuff Flurry, on Friday evening, August 27, 2010. Marsha works for the Southern Company one of the largest generators of electricity in our country, and it is the parent company of Alabama Power and Georgia Power. Marsha is a secretary senior with this firm. I am very proud of her. She is a Christian and loves our Lord.

I will place the order on Friday, August 27, 2010, and have them shipped to Chaplain Sellers. He is in Bagram, Afghanistan. He arrived there on Monday, July 5, 2010. Almost two months have gone by in his six month deployment. Your prayers and concern for him have been felt as God has directed his extensive ministry to our men and women in uniform.

You will be pleased to know that you have supported one of our active duty chaplains who is in harm's way. He is ministering to soldiers who are wounded and some are dying. There is nothing magical about the Psalm 91 Prayer Bandannas, but this Scripture that is printed on the bandanna will remind the soldiers, airmen, marines, sailors, and guardsmen of God's Presence, Promises, Protection, and Provision. Our troops can carry them in their helmets, under their shirts, or wherever they decide where to carry them.

There is nothing like having a Christian chaplain in Afghanistan. Chaplain Seller's ministry of presence is a constant reminder of the invisible Holy God Who loves them as they fight for the freedom of the people of Afghanistan. The Holy Spirit is at work as Randy Sellers ministers to these men and women--some of the finest of America's youth. Most of all, we want to continue our Prayer Shield for him and those to whom he will minister.

Holmes Bible College Student 1937-1941

John W. Swails was a true son of Holmes. His love for the Word of God and his remarkable ability to teach it set him apart as one of the greatest Bible teachers in the Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Pentecostal world. Hundreds of students at Emmanuel College were shaped by his sound Bible instruction. Pastors and lay leaders were instructed and inspired by his teaching and preaching at Bible conferences and camp meetings.

He committed a great portion of the Bible to memory. He memorized the book of Romans when he was confined with a broken leg. It was a blessing to hear him quote whole chapters of the Bible while he was teaching or preaching.

I still remember two of the messages he preached at the Christian Worker's Institute in Falcon while I was the pastor at Culbreth Memorial. I thought the messages on "Breakthrough" and "The Voice of Fear and the Voice of Faith" were two of the best sermons I had heard. I would still like to hear them again, and I imagine that David Butts still has a copy. I had the privilege of preaching with Dr. Swails at the Mid-Atlantic Ministers Conference in Washington, D. C. He preached a masterful message on "The Keys of the Kingdom." I still have copies of his notes on Thessalonians which he also taught at Falcon.

I talked with Clarence Blanchard right after Brother Swails' homegoing, and he told me that he was a classmate of Brother Swails and Brother Padget Robinson. The other day at the Cornerstone Conference, I met Mrs. Esther Baker Hopkins (93 years of age). She graduated in 1938 and Brother Blanchard told me that she was there with him, John Swails and Elmo Hopkins. Three of these have lived to be in the nineties. Brother Swails and Brother Robinson came from the South Carolina Conference.

It was always a pleasure to be around John W. Swails. He was not only a great Bible teacher and preacher, he was also a prince of a person. I always looked forward to seeing him when I visited Emmanuel, especially while I was serving in general leadership. He was always so gracious and kind. I would leave his presence encouraged and giving thanks to God for the marks of grace that exuded from him.

When I came to Holmes, I noticed that he was a faithful supporter of the college. I did not get a chance to thank him in person, but each time he sent a contribution I would write a personal note on the receipt and let him know how much I appreciated his thoughtfulness and faithfulness. It was so encouraging to see a Holmes graduate still expressing his gratitude for the impact Holmes had made on his life seventy years after his graduation.

We have received a number of gifts in memory of Brother Swails. The South Carolina conference has sent a check for $5,000 to the college to remember its favorite son and to assist his alma mater.

As a person I am deeply thankful for the life and ministry of John Swails. As president of his alma mater, I am extremely proud of his impact on the Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Pentecostal world.

Can this be the Messiah? A look at witnessing for Christ

What an amazing story is given to us about God's love for the whole world in the Gospel of John.

The drama unfolds as we look in on a conversation Jesus had with a member of the religious crowd in Jerusalem. His name is Nicodemus.

Then, Jesus moves from this nighttime appointment with a man in the "in-crowd," to an unannounced encounter with a woman of Samaria whose name is not given, an outsider who comes with her burden of broken relationships, loneliness, shame and guilt. They meet at Jacob's well that he had given to his son Joseph.

If is not known for sure how much this woman knew about the concept of "the Messiah." As a Samaritan she only knew about the first five books of Moses, called the Pentateuch. She had no knowledge about the Psalms, the historical and wisdom books, or the prophets. She knew enough, however, to know that when the Messiah comes He will explain everything to us.

This dear woman came at noon when no one usually came to draw water. She wanted to avoid any contact with the women who had already condemned her. She was not well thought of in the village of Samaria. Yet, she had a desire to worship God and brought up the whole matter of where to worship in Mount Gerizim or in Jerusalem. Could it be that she was looking to find the right altar or a place to find forgiveness and wholeness? In the encounter Jesus gently opens up the deep wound of her sin with love and tenderness. She discovered that she could trust Him with her life and yet be loved and not condemned. In that loving relationship she discovered the Source of forgiveness, pardon, cleansing and a new life. In John 3:16, we read, "God did not send His Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it." She discovered that it is not some much the place where one worships, but more importantly the attitude of the heart when one is rightly related to the One we worship.

I have thought about this passage for hours. We are confident that we do not have a full transcript of the conversation Jesus had with this woman. And it is not for us to know all the details of what was said. That conversation is sacred and sealed from us. It seems to me that Jesus filled her in on all the Scriptures she had missed reading. He did that with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. The writer of the Book of Luke tells us this account: "Then Jesus quoted them passage after passage from the writings of the prophets, beginning with the Book of Genesis and going right through the Scriptures, explaining what the passages meant and what they said about Himself" (Luke 24:27, TLB). As they talked among themselves they described their experience like this, ". . . our hearts felt strangely warm as He talked with us."

It was to this woman of Samaria that He revealed He was the Messiah. I believe this is the only place in the Gospel where Jesus speaks of Himself as the Messiah prior to His trial. Jesus said in his response to her statement about the Messiah "I who speak to you am He" (v. 26).

She leaves her waterpot and goes into the city. She doesn't talk to the women, but to the men. Here is what she said, "Come see a Man Who told me all things that I ever did. 'Could this be the Christ?'" (v. 29).

What a powerful method to get the attention of men. Her witness was in the form of a question. They would have to find the answer for themselves. She had found the Living Water and His Name is Jesus, the Messiah. In her simple declaration she offered an opportunity for them to respond. The glory of God had come to this village and the people turned to Jesus.

The best witness for Jesus is one that is spontaneous. Although it is good to learn and memorize Scriptures, there is nothing quite like a personal testimony right out of the heart. Jesus moved into this community and the people responded. May God help us to tell the story about Jesus to others. They are searching for living water that satisfies the soul.

What are you doing to tell others about Jesus? Let us look for opportunities to speak a word for Him as He directs us by His Holy Spirit. May God help us all to share our faith with others around us.

After I had finished tonight's Hugh's News that will go out at 3 a. m. on Wednesday, August 25, 2010, I felt I should share something about the Messiah recorded in Isaiah 42:1-9. I felt compelled to come back up to my office over my garage to copy the words from this great Old Testament book. I composed this Scripture on my keyboard. My PC Bible 4 program was not responding.

Hear the Word of the Lord:

"See my Servant, Whom I uphold; My Chosen One, in Whom I delight. I have put my Spirit upon Him; He will reveal justice to the nations of the world. He will be gentle--He will not shout nor quarrel in the streets. He will not break the bruised reed, nor quench the dimly burning flame. He will encourage the fainthearted, those tempted to despair. He will see full justice given to all who have been wronged. He won't be satisfied until truth and righteousness prevail throughout the earth, nor until even distant lands beyond the seas have put their trust in Him.

"The Lord God Who created the heavens and stretched them out and created the earth and everything in it, and gives life and breath and spirit to everyone in all the world, He is the One Who says [to His Servant, the Messiah].

"I the Lord have called You to demonstrate My righteousness. I will guard and support You, for I have given You to my people as the personal confirmation of my covenant with them. You shall also be a light to guide the nations unto Me. You will open the eyes of the blind, and release those who sit in prison darkness and despair. I am the Lord! That is My Name, and I will not give My glory to anyone else; I will not share My praise with carved idols. Everything I prophesied came true, and now I will prophesy again. I will tell you the future before it happens."
