The university is offering one-year, full-tuition scholarships for first-time students who have been verifiably impacted by the storm.

The purpose of the scholarships is to assist students who have suffered financial hardship as a result of the devastating tornadoes that ripped through Oklahoma on May 19th and 20th.

According to University President, Dr. Ed Huckeby, this is an opportunity for those whose lives were disrupted by these storms to defray their college costs.

“We feel this is not only the right thing to do, but is also the type of gesture that exemplifies Southwestern Christian University’s ‘scholarship, spirit and service’ mantra,” said Dr. Huckeby. “We are excited about the opportunity to have a positive impact on this tragic situation.”

The scholarship would cover the school year beginning in August of 2013 and ending in May of 2014 and will be available to qualifying high school seniors who are graduating this Spring as well as adults looking to begin their college education.

For information about applying for these scholarships, contact Vice President for Development, Kevin Richardson at 405-789-7661.

Additionally, in collaboration with Disaster Relief USA, SCU is providing temporary housing for storm victims, as well as for DRUSA Mobile Kitchen team members from around the country who will be providing meals for the Moore storm victims and relief workers. Storm victims interested in more information about temporary housing should contact the DRUSA office at 405-792-7132.

A Difficult Passage A Biblical & Compassionate View of Divorce & Remarriage Glenn Lafferty

<itunes:author>Hugh Morgan</itunes:author>

There's nothing good about a divorce. It is one of the most painful experiences a person can endure. What's worse is that if one is a Christian and divorced, what he or she often finds is that the institution meant to heal the brokenhearted (the church) often sounds more like an adversary rather than an advocate. Too often they are intentionally re-classified as "second-class" Christians. Why is this so? Should this be so?
Readers will navigate their way through difficult questions such as:

What was God's original intent when He designed marriage?

What role did history and culture play in shaping modern opinion and doctrine?

Once a person is married, can they ever be considered unmarried in the eyes of God?

Did God make provision for divorce as a corrective measure to insure justice for the innocent?

Once divorced, can a person ever remarry?

Does remarriage constitute perpetual sin?

From where did the modern church get its marital views?

New Horizons Ministries is working with the IPHC DRUSA team and Heartland Conference to assist in the efforts to minister to those affected by the recent tornado in Moore, Oklahoma.

We are using our 16 foot DRUSA trailer to take bottled water, blankets, hydration drinks, granola bars and protein bars to the Heartland Conference Center which has been designated as the drop-off location. We are leaving the trailer for DRUSA to use during this time to transport supplies.

Also, the Heartland Conference and New Horizons Ministries Conference are partnering to assist in the cost of bringing the DRUSA Mobile Feeding Kitchen to Oklahoma. Both conferences are securing volunteer lists to work the kitchen and receiving offering from our conference churches to help with the cost of food and supplies. This is a great ministry from the IPHC and we are honored to be a part of it.
I am proud of our NHM churches and ministers who have already begun to bring supplies to our Conference Center and received offerings to give to the Tornado Fund.

God Bless you for your assistance in keeping this information before the IPHC.

Also, we do have one minister, Rev. Jonathan Roberts, whose home and vehicles were destroyed in the tornado. Any donations for his family are appreciated. We are working with him to secure lodging for him and his family (wife and 2 daughters.)

FYI - Rev. Roberts' wife Janay works part time at the school that was destroyed. One of their daughters is in 4th grade there. Let us remember its origins and its purpose.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. It is now celebrated on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays).

On May 27, 2013 wreaths will be placed on the graves of fallen warriors in cemeteries across this land; parades will fill the streets of towns and cities; ceremonies and speeches will be observed and heard. And faithful people will turn aside from the "holiday" to observe a "holy day" of prayer for those who have given their lives in the service of this nation and the cause of freedom.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in Whose hands are the living and the dead: We give Thee thanks for all Thy servants who have laid down their lives in the service of our country. rviGrant to them Thy mercy and the light of Thy presence; and give us such a lively sense of Thy righteous will, that the work which Thou hast begun in them may be perfected; this we pray in your most Holy Name. Amen.
I will be traveling in a small group from my church in Athens, Georgia, to minister in Uganda.

Although I have been to the mission field before, I have never been to Africa, which fills me with intrigue to be face-to-face with people in a third world country.

My church is Christian Life Worship Center, PH Church (formerly Tarkenton Memorial). The others on my team are Pastor J. Brian Williams, Youth Pastor Matthew Smith, and Alan Kizza, a Ugandan who attends our church and just graduated from the University of Georgia.

I am really looking forward to the venues in which we will be ministering. We will be ministering in schools, prisons, a church, and out in the bush. We may be able to even visit an orphanage or two. I’m especially happy that we will be dispensing malaria medicine.

Our trip is sooner than later. We are actually leaving May 29th, which is next week. Time flies!

Although I’ve been to North America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia, I’ve never had to any medical facility to receive injections to prevent diseases that I more than likely would be exposed to abroad. However, this time was the exception. I had five shots last Friday, and I still need to get two more. They really didn’t hurt much although I do appreciate any amount of sympathy I can get.

My praise report is that the Lord has allowed me to raise my support financially, even though I did not advertise this trip on Hugh’s News, but only through letters to family, friends and from people in my home church. I would ask that everyone pray for us though--especially that souls will be saved, and that we will be the missionaries the Lord would have us to be.

God bless you,

May I suggest that Sunday, May 26, the day before Memorial Day which is Monday, May 27, 2013 that you give consideration to placing a table of remembrance in a prominent place in the sanctuary of your local church.

Here is a ceremony that we call “Fallen Comrade Ceremony” (author unknown) which can easily be adapted for your morning worship service with the approval of your pastor:

Narrator: While we are honored to have you all present on this Memorial Day Sunday 2013, we would be remiss if we did not pause to remember those who could not be with us.

The table that you see is set for one, in a place of honor. This table is filled with symbolism.

The table cloth is white symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call of duty for our country. This table is our way of symbolizing the fact that members of our armed forces who are missed from our midst. They are commonly called fallen comrades. Some are called POW or MIA. We call them “brothers and sisters.” They are unable to be with us today, and so we remember them because of their sacrifice and incarceration.

The chair represents the thousands of mothers, fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers who waited at home for over (300,000) Americans who would never return.

The red rose represents the hopes and dreams of peace for each soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice for the people of South Korea, Vietnam, Kosovo, Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan (to name a few). 56,685 casualties came with the cease fire following 10 long years of direct U. S. involvement in the Vietnam War.

A slice of lemon on the bread plate is to remind us of the bitter fate of those captured and missing in a foreign land.

A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears endured by those missing and their families who seek answers.

The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God.

The wine glass placed upside down represents their inability to share our toast and all of life’s hope and dreams never realized by those who were lost.

The yellow ribbon represents the hopes and prayers of the thousands of families and friends who waited for the safe return of their loved ones from Operation Desert Shield / Storm of over 500,000 U. S. Service personnel. The hopes and prayers for 246 went unanswered. During the ongoing operations enduring freedom and Iraqi Freedom, and Afghanistan our brothers and sisters continue to make the ultimate sacrifice while securing freedom for us and our allies.

The lighting of the candle serves to remind us of the ultimate sacrifice our fallen comrades and their families have made to preserve the precious freedom we all cherish today.

As a small tribute, I ask that we take a moment of silence as an expression of our gratitude to those whose selfless service enables us to be here today in freedom.

(Note: It would be fitting for a bugler or a recording of Taps be played).

[Editor's comment: May I suggest that you get as many people involved in this ceremony as possible, young and old alike. When you do it will become their ceremony, and you will encourage them to be more involved in your local church, as well as making friends in your community.

Make sure your local newspaper is given opportunity to cover this news story. You will be pleasantly surprised that newspaper editors will be delighted to publish your story.

Acquire the names of all who have served in the Armed Forces from your church and community. People like to be remembered.

May God grant you favor and success with this Memorial Day Sunday ceremony.]

Freeman and Colleen Mashburn are safe--Tornado hit a mile from their home

<itunes:author>Hugh Morgan</itunes:author>

I have been trying to communicate with Chaplain (Colonel) Freeman and General Coleen Mashburn for a number of days.
May is an exciting time as students graduate, young couples prepare for summer weddings, and in the United States, people remember their mothers.

But it’s also an exciting time for those attuned to the New Testament message. This year, both the Ascension and Pentecost are celebrated in May.

Oddly, many Pentecostals do not place much emphasis on either of these days. I can understand why we might not know as much about the Ascension, but Pentecost? Thankfully there is a growing chorus across the Pentecostal/Charismatic community calling us to a greater Biblical awareness of Pentecost.

I think of the IPHC emphasis at www.iphc.org/gso on the IPHC 7 Core Values leading to Pentecost Sunday. Empowered 21 reveals a major emphasis at www.empowered21.com. I encourage you to explore both these resources. But before you click to those websites, let’s explore a little more about the Ascension and Pentecost.

The Ascension tells of the close of the 40 days that the risen Jesus met with His disciples following His resurrection (Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 16:7-20; Luke 24:13-53; John 20:11–21:25; Acts 1:1-11). We know from 1 Corinthians 15:5-8 that Jesus appeared not only to the Twelve, the women, and the Apostle Paul during those days, but also to more than 500 at one time.

In those 40 days Jesus taught His disciples “things pertaining to the Kingdom of God” (Acts 1:3). Thus, His Ascension on the 40th day was His enthronement at the right hand of the Father as the faithful Son of God and as the true Ruler of the universe. His Ascension meant that He had taken His place as our Intercessor before the Father (Romans 8:34). The Ascension meant that the stage was set for the Holy Spirit to be sent 10 days later at Pentecost. The Ascension meant that Ephesians 4:8-16 was fulfilled through Christ’s victory over death and sin.

This year Ascension is on Thursday, May 9, but most Christians celebrate it on Sunday, May 12. I encourage you to take time between May 9 and May 12 to read the Scripture passages referenced earlier. Use this time to reflect on the victory and hope we have in Jesus Christ.

Pentecost is on Sunday, May 19. It marks the Old Testament Feast of Weeks (Shavuot) and is referenced in Exodus 34:22; Numbers 28:26; and Deuteronomy 16:10. Because it was held 50 days following Passover, Hellenistic Jews referred to it as “Pentecost,” the Greek for “fiftieth.” In Jewish tradition it was also the day when the Law was given to Moses at Sinai.

Acts 2:1-4 is the primary description of what occurred on the Day of Pentecost following Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension. It’s important to note the preparation for Pentecost described in Acts 1.

First, these men and women (120 in the upper room that first Christian Pentecost) had been with the risen Lord for 40 days and had a greater understanding of Him and His mission. When a Man raised from the dead told you to go and pray for 10 days, you did it! They worshiped and prayed as they began to realize the cosmic dimensions of His life and mission (Acts 1:14).

Second, they took time to deal with some business (Acts 1:15-26). They had to replace the betrayer Judas and had to do it according to Biblical mandate. Through their worship and prayer they gained insight into the importance of divine order and structure.

Third, they were “in one accord in one place.” They were faithful to be spiritually holy before the Lord and one another. They were not told what would occur when the Holy Spirit came. But they knew what Jesus had taught them about the Holy Spirit.

I am praying that this May will be a transforming time for the global IPHC family and Christian family. I am convinced that Ascension and Pentecost remind us of the Lordship of Jesus Christ and the reality of His Kingdom on this earth. This is significant as we live with hope in a world dominated by global terror, injustice and confusion. Jesus Christ really is the Lord!

Endnote
1. There are IPHC congregations in Eastern Europe that follow the Orthodox calendar. Thus, Easter for these churches is May 4, Ascension is June 13, and Pentecost is June 23.
She has 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 9 step grandchildren, 28 step great grandchildren, and 12 step great, great grandchildren.

Her legacy is summed up in the words of the song, “All the way my Savior leads me, for I know whate’er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well.”

Mrs. G. I. McGhee

“Mama Ghee”

Why is “All The Way My Savior Leads Me” a favorite song of Mrs. McGhee?

(Excerpts from her writings)

In December of 1965, while pastoring the church in Jonesville, Graydon and I both were in a bad wreck. I was unconscious for several hours. We were in the hospital for 30 days, and in need of a hospital bed and wheel chair for quite some time after that.

After I was able to walk, I was looking at my dress shoes wondering if I would ever be able to wear them. For some reason the shoe that I had on in the wreck was in the closet. I picked it up, it was ruined, and if the Lord ever spoke through me it was then. I spoke out loud these words “For I know whatever befalls me, Jesus doeth all things well” and I was kind of startled. I thought,“Is that part of a song?” So, I got the song book, and there were these words. I have never forgotten them.

There are some things we don’t understand, but we know He doeth all things well. Yes there are happy times and there are hard times but if God is for us who can be against us.

[Editor's Comment: I have known the McGhee family since the 50s. Mrs. Etta McGhee was faithful in her church, conference and at the annual Harvest Train event at Falcon Childrens Home in Falcon, NC. You could always count on Mrs. McGhee and Mrs. Maxine McLaughlin Stanley of Mayodan, NC, being present, and dressed so appropriately and in style and filled with enthusiasm and joy.

I have known Pearlie McGhee Coleman since college days. David McGhee was a friend of mine and was a prince of pastors and preachers. His untimely death deeply touched my life. Tommy McGhee has been and continues to be a friend for many years. I have known him as a pastor, conference superintendent, and now one of the resident members of the executive Council of Bishops in Bethany, OK. Nadine McGhee Wilson, wife of George Wilson, has been a friend for a number of years as well. I served with George Wilson on the World Missions Board, and as I recall Nadine and George, were with us and the members of the World Missions Board when we traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica, and did the jungle cruise. Melvine was on that boat, too. It is a wonderful thing to have lived long enough to know so many people of the IPHC family. What a family we have. Let us celebrate Mrs. Etta McGhee's 100th birthday. And we wish her a blessed Mother's Day, too.

Since I composed this special edition, Pearlie McGhee called our home and talked with Melvine. She reported that all seven of the McGhee children attended Emmanuel College and every one of them is involved in ministry in the IPHC. What a legacy!]
This coming fall, he will be an instructor of freshmen composition classes for his next assistantship assignment. He greatly appreciates this opportunity to be involved with Hugh's News ongoing success, and thanks the readers for considering his current situation prayerfully. God bless!"
Digging a deep water well would more than supply their need. The cost to dig this well is $2,500. Will you give $50 to help us provide this sustainable source of drinking water for Hyderabad Bible College and other locations? The next generation of church leaders are depending on your contribution. Thank you for supporting People to People's Water Well Project! Your contribution is saving lives!
